Really like the 305 series. Can't wait for the first run.

Great video as always. I knew some basics about head rebuilding but I didn't know about the guide specs and having to shim springs for proper installed height.

Awesome build... Are the valves sodium filled???
@marklatorre91928 жыл бұрын
Hi guy, being old school I was very surprised to see that you did not lap in the valves with compound. I had my LS heads done at a local machine shop and after receiving them found that all the valves would leak liquid past the seal area. and after hand lapping with compound and reassembly all leaks were stopped. what are your thoughts on this?
@Myvintageiron75128 жыл бұрын
I actually do lap all my valves by hand after machining for two reasons it gives a perfect seal and also allows me to make sure the seats are the correct width and located correctly I just haven't put that in a video yet I suppose I should do it great Idea

Only a seasoned automotive machinist would have given this response. Proof again for those that aren't real deep in this subject this guy is the real deal...

You cut the valve seats at 30 and 45 degrees does that make the valve length different on the intake and exhaust or do they both still take a .060 shim. Just curious if seat angle effects valve stem height thanks man great video
@Myvintageiron75128 жыл бұрын
They are the same the 30 degree seat on the intake is how GMC made them at the factory

...gotta wonder, with the size of those ports, would this engine benefit from the lumpy ports like a 292 does?

Any idea on the model of it. I have never used one like that

Looking at the shape of the combustion chambers and the straight up and down nature of those valves, I'd be surprised if GMC hadn't considered doing this engine with heron heads (Flat head surface, chamber in piston). Would have saved machining costs on the heads and put the load onto the piston maker or their foundry though, but I assume the comparative ease of casting would make the change cost effective overall. Perhaps Heron heads just weren't fashionable enough?

Sure hope not Andy! Love these videos havent gotten around to donating just yet but i will, it would be nice to see if you have or will be rebuilding a 4.3 because i have 300 thous miles on mine and even though i think its just know getting broke in its proubly going to need some work eventually :-)

I put my shims under my spring locator/shim is that not right? I just thought if it was on top it would take a little away from the spring on the inside locator that holds the spring from moving any

i have a habit of over kill i use o-rings & umbrella seals on my valves on a stock rebuild for good friends stops that puff of smoke on start up once a few thousand miles on engine puts it off for a wile longer
@bulletnova76378 жыл бұрын
Hey, I was wondering, how much can you bore one these engines. Do they use the same raw block for each engine or does each engine have its own raw casting?
@Myvintageiron75128 жыл бұрын
.060 is fine
@jaywinchell21718 жыл бұрын
do you allways deck the block and heads to the same tolerance or can u get away with a few thousands

I am assuming you are talking about the two heads on a V type engine or both banks of the V type yes you need to mill them the same anount
@jimmywilkinson91908 жыл бұрын
what caused the two cly. to gauld to begin with. do you think it had a clogged rad.or was it a oiling problem.

Do the O ring seals do anything?
@Myvintageiron75128 жыл бұрын
Yes when the valve is open(intake) there is a low pressure area pulling on the guide (Intake Stroke) the the O ring shields the valve guide during this time

@Myvintageiron75128 жыл бұрын

@marklatorre91928 жыл бұрын
Hi Jim, The orings seal the opening between the valve stem and the spring retainer, routing most of the oil from the rocker tip down the spring instead of allowing it to travel down the valve stem of the valve. The umbrella seals on the guides offer even more additional sealing.

As a machine shop owner for 24 years I noticed a multitude of mistakes in this video and also in a few of your other videos that I watched. You probably shouldn't be making videos or work on customer components. Hobbyist cost people more money in the long run than just paying a professional to do it correctly in the first place.
