That aluminum item in your goody package is a lifting eye that is used in conjunction with a chain to lift the engine. It allows you to slide the jig along the chain to balance or tilt what you are lifting.

Wayne Walker I was poor as a church mouse when I was in the Marines, and married in 1966. As Will Rogers once said "A silver dollar looked as big as a wagon wheel" 😜 I had no tools to repair my car but a vice grip, screw driver and a pair of pliers. I did a brake job on the front of a 57 chevy. To this day when I hear some yayhoo disparage a mans collection of non-tool truck tools i let em know " yeah them non premium tools suck compared to Snap-On but you know what sucks worse? It is not having tools" argument over LOL

When I worked at a gas station as a teenager, the mechanics would change a couple of engines a week-a tow truck would bring an engine, and they would just set it on the ground, and start it just like you do, to make sure it was a good engine, before putting it in the car. I always thought that was cool-thanks for your videos, Jonathan!

That extra solenoid terminal actually has another purpose. You are correct in what you said, but the 12V sent back to the coil is to provide a full 12v to the coil during starting, not the dropped voltage after the ballast resistor that was used at the time. So 'extra' voltage (the full 12V) was sent to the coil for a hotter spark during cranking, but once the engine was running the dropped voltage (around 9V) was sent to the coil to protect it and the points as well... Now and then when the ballast resistor went bad an engine would start while cranking from the power coming from that extra solenoid terminal, then stall as soon as the key was let go to the 'run' position... Glad you are feeling better!

I believe the "I" terminal bypasses the coil resistor to keep voltage up while cranking is drawing it down.
@442olds7
@442olds7 4 жыл бұрын
Yep, it bypasses the resistor to give full voltage to the coil while cranking. thats why there are 2 terminals on one end of the resistor( some resistors) , the coil side. Its mostly for cold temperature starting, since the battery loses its efficiency in cold temperatures by as much as 40 percent or more in minus temps.. Its does nothing if the coil has a internal resistor though, or not much , maybe a bit depending on how long the wires are from the ignition switch I suppose. Some voltage drop can happen there.
@drlegendre
@drlegendre 4 жыл бұрын
@@442olds7 That definitely sounds right. But I'm more familiar with that terminal being on the ignition switch, rather than the starter solenoid.
@442olds7
@442olds7 4 жыл бұрын
@@drlegendre ya the I on the switch goes to the coil or the resistor depending on if the coil has an internal resistor or not. The I on the solenoid goes to the coil side of the resistor. If it has no resistor you dont really need it which means the coil has an internal resistor...well unless someone forgot to put on an external resistor on a coil that needs a external resistor that is hehe.
@jlexon
@jlexon 4 жыл бұрын
The coil resistor is there to lower the voltage across the points during normal running to decrease the burning of the points' contacts. But during starting the full 12 volts gives a hotter spark while the starter is cranking the engine over. Something I learned from my 90 year old dad back when I was a kid working under the hood with him.
@joepacheco4038
@joepacheco4038 4 жыл бұрын
GM used it as you said to bypass resistor when starting to get 12volt to coil. When the key was released the coil would get power from the ignition circuit to the resistor or resistor wire or coil would have built in resistor.

Happy to see you back. Hope your hospital visit went well !! That engine sounds pretty sound !! Those engines always ran rather "noisy". Even when they were "current". I don't know if they had solid lifters but I seem to recall always hearing the valves when they were running. Just a "logical" thought about your garden. If you say your soil is "sandy", I would expect any water you put on your plants is going to "run right through" the sand. With that in mind, wouldn't some "organics" (compost, peat moss, etc,) and a "well" around each plant allow the plant to receive a adequate amount of water for it to grow better???

Hey Jonathan, 1. that bracket is chain hook! you just slide a chain thru the hole and then let the link slide down into the slot to get the length you want - can be attached / welded to anything. We had hooks, pad eyes and all that welded all over the ship... 2. on a mopar that switched terminal on the selenoid goes to the coil to bypass the ballast resister so that the coil can get the max voltage available when starting - when cranking you're already down to 9 to 10 volts... really helps in the winter up north... Figured that out the hard way when I replaced the computer on my 82 D-150 - would not start cold without it...

Hi Jonathan. Glad you're feeling better Great to see you're using the little Jimmy V6 on an upcoming project. They are a stout little engine.
