Coming from an electrician.... At 10:25 I'd recommend moving the electrical box that is on the left side of that wall to the right an inch and a half. Just add a 1' piece of 2X4 and move it over. Will look better and make drywall finishing much easier. Make sure also that your light switch boxes are at least 3" from door openings to allow for trim. On interior doors with only 1 stud this means adding a 2X4 as well.

Yes, your woodpecker was a Northern Flicker. It was a male. He may be after something on your house but I'll bet he was actively looking for a mate. Longer hours of sunlight are their signal to begin courtship. Persistently pecking/drumming is their display. You are making such great progress on your house. Love the wood stove. You should all be warm and toasty next winter.

@robertfakler85645 жыл бұрын
Glad you solved the Flicker problem. Hope it doesn't have lots of relatives to take it's place. A flock of them will do some serious damage to all your exposed wood. We often see dead birds that fly into a window too hard, as they must see light coming from behind and think they can fly towards it. Hope your exterior wall plumbing doesn't cause trouble. Sounds like you're addressing it. I'm surprised your water softener only recharges monthly. My top of the line Culligan softener recharges about every 3 days. And it uses a 50# bag of rock salt about once a month. I enjoy watching your progress.

Here in Japan the PEX stuff comes in only blue and pink, but it's the insulation that is coloured not the water line, and yes it is all insulated, hot and humid in the summer makes you want to insulate your cold water lines too! If you run short of some line, you can buy just the insulation, this works, but I see your point on the non colour coded water line. Sad about the woodpecker, I bet he just could not find enough food. I'm looking forward to seeing the seasons change! Cheers from Tokyo!

lol at sad about the woodpecker . i have seen abandoned houses where woodpeckers pecked feet and feet of siding off a house causing major water damages . not only that they disturb ones peace by pecking on houses that people live in also causing damages . woodpeckers also cause lots of damages to trees . they peck the bark completely off in a complete circle killingg the top of the tree . also the holes they peck allow for certain bugs to get inside of the tree and the tree will not survive . the woodpeckers purposely peck a hole so that a bug will go in for them to eat later . lots of birds and animals in this world that can cause almost as much destruction as most of the humans .

I have a funny, not at the time, story while elk hunting near Big Elk creek on the Wyoming/Idaho line near Palisade. It was barely breaking day and you could just make out the tree trunks in the dark timber and there she was a momma moose and a calf with in about 10 yards... we just stood there trying to make each other out and all I could think of is are moose one of the animals that don't like bright colors like the orange vest and hat I had on... luckily she and her calf snorted and eased on off into the timber after what seemed like an eternity, in reality it was probably only about 3 or 4 mins but felt like hours at the time... enjoy your channel and keep up the good work.

You made some very interesting comments about water. We just moved to our homestead this past September. We found the old well (there used to be a house on the property), but there was no plumbing from it and it is an old, shallow, hand dug well. There is a possible spring on the property, but with the unusually high amount of rain we got this year, I have no way of knowing if it is year round and if it is, if there is enough flow to serve our water needs. So the whole time we have been here we have been using rain water to wash with. I had just commented to someone the other day that this is the first winter that I remember ever not having an issue with dry skin. Also, we have a tankless water heater installed. I did not know that they last longer using soft water. I have been trying to figure out what is the best thing to do for our water supply. Develop the existing well, drill a new one, try to develop the spring, or do a rain water collection system. Rain water is soft. You have helped me decide, I think it will be a rain water collection system. Now to figure out how best to set it up.

Network cables and wires to the windows and doors for future alarms could be a good thing before you close up the walls. Most of the solar inverters now can use a data line into them and with the kids keeping them from the net is a pain on wireless but wired just pull the plug in a locked closet/cabinet. The drywell for the drain would need to be down hill enough from the well to not contaminate it as the water soaks in. Feel the skull and neck of the bird as it might of simply flown into a window trying to escape the cold. One of the jobs I hated when working at Bestbuy was the morning check the front of the store for seagulls that flew into the window above the doors.

Nature is simply awesome. I live in the suburbs of Montreal, a stantard issue area but within protected, natural, forested. atrea all around us. But we regularely see rabbits eating the unwanted weeds and dendelions (good !), foxes, marmots eating our carrot plants ( so what?), sometimes deers. We feed Jays, woodpeckers and all kind of birds. We plant flowers attracting butterflies. Some neighbors complain every year to our city Hall, mostly about "our" birds, for the droppings in their pools ! WTF ! They get turned down so fast ! Many of our neighbor young ones ask every summer if they can come in our backyard to watch "our" wildlife. But of course, young ones ! We serve them (natural) fruit juices and teach them not to move and watch the life srrounding them. Oh the Ooooohs, the aaaahs, the happy faces, the wide opened eyes ! A gift from.... nature ! Celebrating LIFE !

Knowing how cold it can get and with plumbing in an outside wall would a manual drain-back be practical? Maybe your hose-bids will suffice? A typical out of a specific color of PEX solution for color coding piping is to use a colored electrical tape wrap for ID.

Hi. Looks like you have long water line from heater to some tap. So its gonna take few minutes for fresh hot water to pass way to tap. In such case you may make circulation with back way tube and circulation pump. Also good insulation very important as its tubes play like radiators. And cold tube may couse a lot of condensation. Good luck.

I saw you cutting down a few trees in a recent video across the road, the woodpecker/ FLICKER most likely had a home in those trees. These type of birds would rather live in the tree. Not your siding. It was cold, hungry and trying to survive. The harsher snow fall also may have restricted food sources. Most Flickers I watch are ground feeders getting ants and grubs, or insects in dead wood. Problem with taking trees down, is some of the wildlife lose their homes. Big $ for a Moose tag in Idaho , but well worth it. Will make an interesting video of the hunt.

Juvenile Flicker wasn't born early enough last year to join the others for the migration and died of starvation doing the only thing instinct could tell it to do. Drill holes in wood so sap will run out and capture attracted insects to then eat the trapped insects. If you have enough of them, they will kill your pine trees since constant sap production isn't a good situation ever. They did kill a fine austrian pine of mine so I shotgun remedy the problem away every chance I get.
