.308 is the easiest caliber I have been shooting 175 grain Sierra since 1994. Stuck with it and even in the Marine Corps the M118 LR is a 175 grain Sierra BTHP. Now retired and still shooting the .308 May not be the best at one thing but it gets the job done. Never miss….! Once you stick with the same caliber for so long, you learn it like the back of your little man… Essentially it’s the KISS mentality. Even a little toss up with grain, you still don’t miss. You can find ammo everywhere, surplus and all, cheap and gets the job done. Semper USMC / Retired

The .308 will kill ANY animal in North America and will also work for any plains game in Africa. Magnificent round with large killing power when used with an accurate gun. You picked a good one Marine.

Mountain Man - first thx u for your service!! So glad to hear you state a particular weight and name of your favorite round. I just bought a new .308 and was wondering about a weight to use. I used 150 g with my 30.06 but didn’t really know why I chose that weight.

This fall, I took a bull elk at 465 yards with my Savage 110 .308 using a Nikon ProStaff 7 scope and Federal Premium Terminal Ascent 175 grain bullets. The shot placement was a slightly back, double-lung shot. The elk turned around, took one stutter step, and dropped. Job done. I have one centerfire hunting rifle, this .308. It's taken pronghorn, deer, and pronghorn at 140 to 465 yards. While the industry would love to see me buy different calibers for different species and scenarios, my experience is that it is all about shot placement and bullet expansion. You need a rifle you shoot a lot in different realistic positions in different realistic conditions to be able to confidentially make adjustments in the field and have confidence in every shot taken. You need high quality bullets and know the foot pounds of force needed to be delivered and thus distance to be within for what you are shooting. I see guns as tools, not toys, and prefer hunting over shopping. The .308 is one of the great all-around calibers for this overall strategy to big game hunting.

I'm a little late to this show! Really appreciate the effort you put into this show and folks understand that barrel twist rate should affect your bullet choices, 1-12 is ideal for 165gr or less, where 1-10 ideal for 165gr and up! I personally like 1-12 twist for hand load where it full power or subsonic loads, easy on the shoulder! Thanks again Nate

First time shooting it after sight in we shot it at 400 yards even with OLD cheap corlokts 150 grain put 4 out of 4 shots in the bottom of a crushed coke can. We now have another one I bought for my dad since everyone was that impressed with it. Cant wait to try further distances and other grains to see what it REALLY likes to get 1,000 or even more.

My Ruger Gunsite Scout like the regular Remington Core Lokt 150 gr. Sighted in, 2 in. high at 100, and I get sub. 2" 3 to 5 shot groups, and about 2 1/2 in groups at 200. That's using a Redfield 3x9 scope, solid bench, and good gun rest. It's never failed to drop a deer every year. Granted, all the shots have been 150 yds. or less. I made a previous comment about your video on the 30-30. I always take one deer with each rifle (Ruger and Marlin). Two a year is all I need for me and my wife.

Another awesome & informative video brother. Loving your channel. I never really was on the 308 train, until covid. My main bolt gun love affairs were with 270 & 30-06. But at the brink of Covid, those 2 calibers vanished along with reloading components. I couldn't help but notice everywhere had 308, well 7.62x51, cheaper than anything else on the shelf. Even cheaper than 9mm. So I traded the 270 for a savage axis II in 308. The 30-06 R700 stayed, she ain't going anywhere 😉
@spaceaddict5484
@spaceaddict5484 2 жыл бұрын
Just got the axis in 308 too. Are you shooting the 7.62 nato's out of it? I noticed it's a lot cheaper than 308 ammo and enough people shoot 7.62 out of 308 but wondering if the axis handles them well

Nice vid WTW. I love my Browning AB3 in 308. I use 168 grain big game rounds. If I see an elk while I'm out in the bush I want that do all round. Anywhere I can hunt elk with a general tag is like a lottery until I can get a network of property owners in the right places. Anywhere where I know I will find elk it's a draw. I'm also in grizzly country. I'd rather have the high powered rounds in case I run in to some bad luck. 🤤 That 168 grain Berger Hybrid dropped my 5x4 Whitetail where it stood so I'm a happy camper!

My Weatherby Vangard shoots a 1MOA group at 100 yards. I am at point blank range out to 270 yards. The other considerations - wind & rain. Why 150 grain? Can't get much else here any more. This is a valid point, also added point...open to opinion or discussion, some ammo performs differently at different ranges and shooters. So many variables. For example,and not a very good one, the difference between slugs an birdshot. Most people can handle birdshot like its nothing, some people can do that with slugs. Some folks can shoot pistols on a dime all day and then pick up a rifle and couldnt even hit a good idea lol. What a wonderful passion it is with firearms

So, I haven't tried the Rem Core-Lokt Tipped boolots yet. I have a Rem 700 chambered in 30-06 that I bought back in 1998 that loves the Fed P3006Q - Nosler Ballistic Tip 165 gr. Not sure if the tipped core-lokt is a boat-tailed profile, however, Federal has decided to discontinue the P3006Q, much to my dismay. It was a very accurate, consistent round. I have a Leupold 3Xi-CDS mounted on the top, shots out to 250 - 300 yds always put meat in the freezer. May have to try the core-lokt tipped to see how they perform. Oh yeah, just joined the .308 crowd with a Ruger SFAR in .308. Looking forward to see how it shoots.

I really like your videos, they are interesting. I have a 7 mm Remington short ultra mag. I have shot the 140 grain combined technology bullets, but fine them to be too destructive on white tails within 100 yards. I pulled all of the combined tech bullets and replaced them with the 140 grain Barnes bullet. Much better! I am telling you this to make a suggestion that instead of just calibers, you test different bullets within that caliber. There are some shooters that might find that interesting.

Hey man Iv been hunting for 10 plus years but Iv always used the same rifle, I’m lucky and get to hunt where the deer come in close, but now ima use my 308 it’s been 6 years since Iv shot a deer with it and I have it sighted for 100 yards but I’m prolly gunna take a shot up close like 20 yards close, I couldn’t remember if I needed to hold high or low because it’s sighted for 100 and I’ll be shooting 20. Good video man I needed it

If your group at 100 yards is showing low, then when you shoot 200yds its 5"inch low, 1" lower than the 4" the drop chart shows, it could be due to the low group.

I shoot Winn. 308 savage , where I shoot behind the house in the simi-wooded swamp , coastal nc. .308 is training me for a predator gun . (Yotes only) I use a 3in.x3in. target out of a elevated platform 100 yards out . My first shot out this rifle felt like a matrix moment 😅
