the chamber has been reamed oversize. The reason the hammer was back on that one shot was that escaping gas pushed the firing pin back, which pushed the transfer-bar safety back, which recocked the hammer, similar to how a semi auto works (but without the bolt to actuate). That rifle needs sent back for a new barrel, as yes, it is unsafe to use a weapon with an oversized chamber. you typically find this sort of failure in extremely worn firearms...not in brand new ones.

Split cases is something to be weary of but i would be more worried of that smaller hole in the target. That means you had a bullet failure. Im just wondering if that barrel is maybe chanmbered in .360 and bored in .350. Bullet leaving the case then the back blast blowing the case wall and the secondary forward presure messing up your projectile. A smaller hole dictates that the jacket has seperated from the bullet. Thats a very bat situation if that jacket gets stuck in the barrel.

Check chamber internal diameter. The case is suppose to taper from .390 to .3792 inches and the chamber is supposed to go from .3910 to .3802 inches along the length of the brass. I suspect a chamber that's been bored out to .3915 the whole way, or something like that. In a way, it's to the ammunition manufacturer's credit that the splits are all the same length. That's some consistent brass there.

I know what happened! Rimmless cartridge in break action rifle... Here in Europe we have special rimmed calibers (like 8x57 IRS, 7x57R, 7x65R..) so it can't stuck in your rifle. Those old calibers with rimm are not so popular anymore even in our lands, because everybody wants 308 win or 30-06 (just because they can find that ammo almost everywhere..), and because of that every gun factory makes break action rifles in those rimmless cartridges right now. I mean you saw that small steel "claw" in that extractor who works with small spring inside it and push that claw out. That thing can make some troubles. It is not about gun, it is not about rifle brand, quallity issue or something like that. I mean I use combination gun in 12 gauge and 30-06 and I had the same thing once. I bouth my gun for over 2000 dollars and that happened to me. I talked with gunsmith and he said that is just because of your caliber choice. All calibers without rand on the bottom of the case will sometimes make some problems with extraction and I must live with that... He said if it happens more often I can replace that extractor but I can't guarantee that this thing will work perfect from now... I had luck and I musn't replace anything and I had no more any issues with case extracting, but you must be carefull with those type of guns.. Sorry because of my english

@lovacporodjenju4363 .30-06 is a bottle necked case with a significant shoulder and good amount of angle. If the chamber dimensions, headspace and ammo are within spec it shouldn't have splitting issues. The .350 Legend headspaces off the case mouth and is considered a straight wall, but does have a slight taper (Roughly 9.9 mm to 9.6 mm over a 43.4 mm case length. This makes small variations in cartridge case, chamber dimensions and headspace more critical. Straight wall case single shots are popular in the USA because some jurisdictions allow them during primitive weapon season and some states only allow straight wall case rifles as a way to reduce the range a stray bullet could potentially travel.
@HunterForEver122 ай бұрын
@@gk5891 okay I mean about those splitting issues I can't really tell anything, that is something else, I was just talking about case extraction after shot.. Before you ship it off, slug the barrel and see if the groove diameter is .356 or .358”. I’ve found out the hard way that some manufacturers bore them differently to accept either .356” 9mm bullets, or .358” to accept .38/357 bullets. If it’s the smaller diameter you might be having overpressure issues. I’m not saying that’s the cause. Just something to look at. Either way, if it’s doing that with factory ammo I’d send it in. @bobgarr62462 ай бұрын
Slugging the bore will not work here. It will determine the land and groove depth and diameter. But slugging will not provide you with chamber dimensions. This will require a chamber casting. This can be done with molten sulphur, or more easily with Cerosafe which Brownells and Midway sell. Accurate readings can be taken from the casting to determine chamber flaws and dimensions.
@CastIeBravo2 ай бұрын
@@bobgarr6246 I’m not talking about a chamber casting. I’m talking about verifying the actual bore diameter. Two very different things. With a heavy bullet that’s long in the shank it provides more bearing surface and can raise chamber pressures to dangerous levels, even if off by just a few thousandths of an inch, especially with a jacketed or monolithic copper bullet. A chamber casting will give you chamber dimensions, but slugging the bore will give you true bore diameter that can be measured with calipers. Ideally he should do both.

Clearly a chambering problem, and clearly time to return the gun to Rossi and report on their response to the problem and explanation of why they shipped a gun that endangered the shooter. Firearms are built with a big safety factor you shouldn't be blowing primers out of the pocket and into your trigger mech from hot ammo. I believe that the chamber is way out of spec. The 350 Legend case is straight walled but still has a slight taper. The only thing I think could cause that problem is a chamber finishing reamer at the factory was ground without any taper. There also is a slight chance that the chamber could have been reamed a few thousandths too deep. The fact that a case slipped by the extractor seems to indicate that. The barrel should be taken to a gunsmith to have a chamber cast made to measure the chamber dimensions. Also run a no-go headspace gauge into the chamber to check for excessive headspace.

@@c.j.rogers2422 I'm a newbie to guns, but I didn't think it's normal. It's not a huge bulge, could be missed if not paying attention, but they are bulged. .38 spl seems to be ok with no bulge.

@@TARandFEATHERS they are trying to snow job you man I would send it back to be fixed any bulge in a casing is not a good sign. You are only one round away from a major issue, Don't shoot it again until it's fixed.
@brich16462 ай бұрын
No that's definitely not normal! If your brass is bulging it means the case isn't properly supported in the chamber and could potentially push all the gas that's supposed to go down the barrel back at the shooter. In other words blow up in your face but most guns are built to vent that gas away from the shooter but you never know with cheap guns. Might have skipped drilling those vent holes as a cost saving measure lol. You probably have a head space issue which can be checked pretty easily with field gauges or slugging the barrel with cerosafe. Gun smiths only charge 20 bucks to check it for you in my area of ohio. Anyway hope you see this before you loose a eye!

I had brass splitting on me with a Thompson Contender .44 mag barrel. This was with factory ammo. After a little research found that some of the old .44 mag barrels were rechambered to .45 LC but were left marked as .44 mag. This is definitely unsafe.

BrazTech Rossi may have some QC issues on that line. Maybe they shipped them to the US and had Boeing ream out the chambers... Either that or the stock channel sitting the barrel is making overpressure problems, that's what I saw on ABC news anyhow.

That sucks, I have a 20+ year old Rossi break action in 243. Accurate as hell. It sucks when companies go in different direction. First, as someone who has had multiple eye injuries and is blessed to still be able to see, always wear some glasses because you only have two eyes… I’d say hats an over sized chamber, and the splits crossed on the case that allowed it to push forward into the barrel. Send it back or destroy it, whatever you do, don’t sell it to someone else, at least until you get it checked. It could also be the ammo, wouldn’t hurt to send it back to the factory for testing, if you have any left.

I have a similar Rossi story. Is 22wmr though. Every single round I fired, from the very first one blew the bottom open, tore the cartridge wide open at the base. I sent the rifle back and it came back from the factory exactly the same. Now it sits. I won't use it and would never sell it to another as it is dangerous. I tried ammo from 3 different manufacturers, all the same issue. I'll never buy another Rossi, EVER.
@bernardmurphy61462 ай бұрын
As a US Army unit armorer for years, I would redline that rifle, don't trust it to send another round and send it back to the factory. I carry a Rossi, as a LEO, we had a lever action Rossi, 357 in our trunk. I love Rossi's. Always had good luck with them . I would also mic the rounds. The rims should never have went that far into the chamber and the smaller hole size is suspect. Makes me think the ammo got crossed up somehow at the factory.

@Timbermonkey360-em4th2 ай бұрын
You're right, that is a chamber issue . That's the same results you would get if you fired a 22 LR in a 22 MAG it would split the brass just like that... I'm wondering if the barrel label stamping is wrong because the amo definitely doesn't fit the chamber.. A factory defect, unless someone has fired some over charge loads through it but ,for it to be that bad ,I think they would have had to fire several over charged loads in it to stretch that chamber that much .. I would call factory chamber defect..

If some different ammunition does the same thing you got something wrong Try a different brand brass could be brittle
@halfcirclehranch6877Ай бұрын
I thought the same thing. It could just be they had a bad run of brass, too hard and brittle. But if he tests other ammo, he'd need to play it safe. Put it in a sled and use a string to pull the trigger for safety. As consistent as the splitting was, should show an issue within the first couple shots.
