Hello from Oklahoma! Good Video! Great information!👍👍 Great to have a good dog for a buddy. I've hunted with the 30-06 for years. I'm 63. Can't speak on the .308, I've never used it. My favorite load is a pet reload with the 165 grain SP Hornady bullet. My personal limit is 300 yards. I've used it to drop mule deer in the black hills, white tail in the woods, 2 black bears and a few hogs. Even a coyote or three. Thanks for all U do. God Bless!

I love both and have both! look guys the 308 is a 7.62 X 51. The same ballistic being pushed by more powder in the '06! The 30-06 is a 7.62 X 63! The 06 is ALWAYS the winner(with all other things being equal)! The reason the Military phased it out was 2 fold. 1) weight and 2) 30-06 is less controllable at a Fast rate of fire! WTW good Job!

In 1990 I was looking for a new rifle to replace my my heavy Remington 742 in 30-06 to hunt deer. I test fired many bolt action rifles in 308 and 270 but found the recoil to be a little much in the lighter rifles. So I ended up buying a 7mm-08. I found that it was close to 30-06 in trajectory and energy at long range (300 yards is long range for me) with available loads at the time. Here are some numbers for the 2 best Hornady loads. At 300 the drops are 11.4 and 13 inches. At 600 yards they are 77 and 83.7 inches so it beats all your loads. Energy at 300 yards are 1770 and 1783 ft-lbs. At 600 yards they are 1119 and 1206. It beats almost all the 308's and 30-06's. And we all know that energy at the muzzle only counts for grizzly. For the rest its at range. Not bad for a youth ladies caliber.

I still have a Ruger American 308 that I customized into a long range tack driver. The thing with the 308 is you have to keep it within its effective range. Other than that I wouldn't trade it for anything plus ammo and reloading supplies are always readily available.

On a field training exercise, I got to watch a Browning .30 caliber machine gun firing next to an M60 machine gun. I couldn't see either gun, but I could tell which was firing big watching the tracers. M60 had a higher trajectory than the .30 cal. Had to hold higher to reach the target.

Good stuff. For me, the standout value is the energy of the .308 CLT 180 gr at 600 yd. That 1097 is just 107 ft-lb from the highest .30-06 on the chart, and it ties or beats the other .30-06 loads seen here.

.308 was brought about by the us military wanting similar performance to .30-06 but out of a short action. Being that you pretty much have to decrease case capacity to accomplish that, .30-06 will always have a slight advantage when using the exact same bullet as long as it's loaded correctly with an optimal powder.

The advocates of the heavy 220 grain .30-06 just don't understand how to quantify the advantage. A good way to do so is to talk about .303 British when it was used for elephant hunting. The older Mk. I and Mk. II rounds used a 215 grain lead hollowpoint bullet. When elephant hunters were unable to purchase their heavy Nitro Express ammo, they tried using an Enfield with this round, and found it could penetrate the frontal bone of an elephant's head and kill it. Later, when these became unavailable, they tried with the Mk. VII bullet, a 174 grain FMJ, which had higher velocity, and much more energy. This bullet would just bounce off the head of the elephant and make it really angry. The round that was weaker on paper was more effective on particular targets. Energy does not translate directly to effectiveness. The 220 grain bullet is most likely a more effective round when dealing with particularly large and hardy game such as a moose or bear. The greater weight is better at carrying through flesh and bone. And this is most likely what the 220 grain advocates really meant.

I think you’re on to something, but I believe you missed the main variable: bullet construction and terminal performance as a result. The slower moving 220s will probably penetrate deeper because they won’t mushroom as much as their speedier relatives. I’ve put down a lot of hogs, wild and domestic with a subsonic 22LR to the front of the skull, no problem, because they are moving too slowly to deform on impact.
@halfcirclehranch
@halfcirclehranch 2 жыл бұрын
@@phild9813 Actually, in the .303 British example, the 215 grain bullet was a lead hollowpoint and more likely to mushroom than the 174 grain pointed FMJ.

Great material. Very informative and thank you!. Let me tell ya about one of my first deer in Montana. It took me almost seven hours of hiking just to get back far enough to where this herd was... on the steep back of this bowl, this crazy mulie acted like it had never seen a human being before... no more than 10 yards uphill from me and it stood there staring at me like he wanted me to join him for lunch. I had no idea that my .30-06 had enough power to go through his shoulder so I shot above the shoulder... apparently WAY above the shoulder. It knocked him over and he started sliding downhill. In fact, I had to move so he could slide right over my boot prints in the snow from where I'd shot him. I watched him as he slid further down the hill. At the bottom of his slide he got up and went into the woods and though I searched for a long time, I never saw him again. I learned to trust the power of my .30-06. (I also learned later that the shoulder bone isn't directly above the leg anyway... lots of concerns where I need not have been concerned. Just shoot it.) That was about 40 years ago so. It hurts a bit less now so I can tell the story without sinking into depression. Maybe someone else can learn from my experience.

I have a Ruger American in 308 and 2 30-06 rifles, a Marlin XL7 and a Winchester XPR. I love both cartridges. I tend to use the 308 when I go to NY to hunt whitetail and my 30-06s' I use more out west (I live in Nevada) for mule deer and elk. Seems both prefer 150 grain bullets over anything heavier but some of the 165/168 bullets do pretty decent. You can't go wrong with either of these fine cartridges and ammo is usually available for both.

I love what you are doing here. This is far more complicated than what you show here. Getting into the weeds about barrel length and hand loads changes thing radically. My 150s loaded to max in the Speer manual for 30/06 and 308 place the 308 marginally superior in velocity with equal barrel length. After 165grain bullet weights the case capacity of the 30-06 takes over. It’s amazing how convoluted it can all get.

Oh, you’re also discounting hand loads, when I had my 06, and hand loaded, still within safe specs by a lot, I had 220’s I used for bear hunting, that stomped everything on this list for energy out to 200 yds. Sore after that, they had a drastic drop with every 100 yds further, but not what they were meant for. Those had a lot of energy, also were shoulder thumpers, they were coming out the muzzle at 2800 fps…haha. But factory yeah…they load them super weak for some reason.

Thanks for "pointing" out the difference between the Remington SP and PSP bullets. Ballistic coefficient and bullet drop. I reload the Hornady 180gr PSP (they call it BTSP) since it has a BC of 0.452 vs the Remington Core-Lokt 170gr PSP of 0.383. If @WHO_TEE_WHO could post a picture of the bullets he compared at the end of his video, that would be a good addition.

Anytime you get a pass-through it's wasted energy not absorbed by the animal, so it really doesn't matter at that point. At longer distances and/or larger animals where the bullet dumps all of its energy and never exits is where the difference would even matter, but it's still pretty close considering. I've hunted with both, and really don't see a noticeable difference, but it's really personal preference. Happy hunting!!!

I enjoy the .308 due to efficiency, less powder per reload, with reloads I’m getting factory 30-06 velocity and moderate pressures, I enjoy the 30-06 as well, but I get more reloads, about 20 percent more per pound of powder. And when you know the bullet drop at distances you hunt at it’s a no brainer. I like both but with todays powder prices I enjoy shooting the .308 more.

Half Basset Hound, half Beagle, I'd like to have one of them. Nice buddy dog. Man's best friend. One thing about it though, those dozen turkey's that were in the back yard today about 10 feet from the carport and the many deer that constantly graze often close to the house and also bed down at night close by would Not be hanging around. That beautiful music to my ears ball that a beagle emits would make the critter's too nervous to hangout. The Basset part if dominant I reckon could cause the pup to have a deep woof but I would hope it was a big ole ball. I love hearing that. Oh yeah we're supposed to be talking about boom booms & pew pews but hey, you started it😆. I really enjoy gun's but I absolutely love dog's.😍💓

Laughing about your "deerS" aside, I am a LONG time shooter / owner of a Belgium Browning 30-06 by way of my father, who bought it just after he got back from Vietnam in 67'. I DID however get your original question wrong... NOT because the 30-06 isn't my favorite.. But, because so many people over the years said the .308 was so much better. I've shot almost all the popular calibers, but rarely a .308, and even more rare, anything out past 400 yards. I'm biased for sure. I do appreciate all this information. [apologize for the editing - watching a game and was bouncing back and forth ]. Really like the info you've laid out! Thanks!

I know that I'm going to get a bit of kick back on this opinion but here goes: I'm old enough to have hunted with men who served in the U.S. military in WWI, WWII, and the Korean War. Most of them, not all but most, owned and hunted with bolt action rifles chambered in .30-06 because they had come to trust the round during combat operations. Returning Vietnam War Veterans, many of whom served from 1964 through around 1969 or so, purchased and hunted with bolt and semi auto rifles in .308 because they had come to trust the round during combat operations. Then, around late 1969 through the end of the Vietnam War, returning Veterans started using bolt action, and some semi auto rifles, chambered in calibers that started with a "2". Now before anyone gets their knickers in a square knot, please understand I was hunting with men I was related to and grew up farming with and they were willing to tell an inquisitive youngun WHY they liked their particular rifle and cartridge combination while avoiding going into the gory details if you will. I never thought to question why they made the choices they did because they never failed to fill their freezers with the rifles and ammo they had settled on. By the way, Remington ammo was the brand of choice for many, if not most, of those men and bullets in the 150 to 170grn range were the bullet weights of choice. Here in late 2022 all of the older Veterans are gone as are many of the Vietnam War era men, but I have noticed a bit of a turnaround, not a huge one but I've noticed it all the same, with the return of the .30-06 and .308 cartridges and rifles chambered in them to the deer and hog hunting fields. Calibers starting with a "2" are by far the most popular around here but it seems that some younger Veterans of the wars in the Middle East find that maybe the rifles and cartridges that their Grandad, Dad, or an Uncle or two hunted with work better, for them at least, than the smaller, faster, lighter calibers do on deer and hogs. As for me, well, I'm a lever gun kind of guy whose service came toward the end of the Cold War, and my go to "longish range" rifle comes in the form of a scoped Savage 99E in .308 Winchester launching 170 grain Remington CLT JSPs. Excellent video as usual! Keep on keepin' on!!!!

Gravity exerts the same down force on bullets. You do find that the time to target determines the difference in fall distance. Relevant factors are initial muzzle speed and BC design affecting loss in velocity, both determine the time to target. More time in flight will increase the drop. Note that drop velocity increases as time increases, but force of gravity remains constant.

308 is short action making for a lighter overall platform with a minimal performance difference, that’s why it is the superior military cartridge out of the two. In the deer woods will you notice the extra weight probably not, but when your carrying 210 rounds and everything is a few ounces heavier, ounces make pounds and after a day of foot patrols you will definitely know the difference.

All very good data and accurate but...each bullet was designed for a different bullet weight. The standard 30-06 will use a 174 grain bullet and the .308 was designed to match the performance of this bullet and weight....using a 147 grain bullet which it does very well. Either one is a great round for any normal range deer hunting. My new favorite round i have been using lately is .45 Raptor. Check out the ballistics on this round and i think this may be your new favorite round.

I've used both 30-06 and 308 taking deer and hogs. In both I used the 165 gr. PSP I really didn't see a difference in them at 100yds. Like you said shot placement and knowing your rifle and bullet drop. Now my 308 shoots sub MOA at 200yds. The 308 I've shot many rounds through it and I've done testing out to 600yds. In the 30-06 I've changed to the 125gr for this year, haven't done that much testing but I'm going to see if at 400yds, which is my longest shot, how well it preforms.

Hola amigo. Anyway, people are confused because 30-06 changed a bit since when it was originally taken into service -1906. When in 1940s 308 was invented, it mimicked 30-06 a lot but it had a different type of powder and used shorter cartridge and it was slightly more powerful because of the powder. This continued till year 2000 when 30-06 manufacturers said screw it and started loading 30-06 slightly hotter than 308 because it had more space inside of the cartridge to accommodate more powder. That's why people are confused but a good day at the range with a chronograph can clear things up. Cheers!

the reason the '06 was not loaded HOT, is that the rifle designed for it, could not handle a hot gas pressure of over 62,000cpus.on the M1 Garand, it would break the operating system by damaging the bolt slide group..also the gas values weren't designed for this pressure. do your research before stating half facts, sir....current hot loads for the modern '06 exceed 62000 cups....and the 308 win steps right to that edge but perhaps the loading manuals from Hornady are a better assessment of is ballistic capabilities... 168gr spirepoint boat tail has a BC of .550...while a 190grn boattail edges it .610. the .308 will still perform well with a 190 gr although not recommended above 2500fps modern hi power loads for the '06 at 190grboatail exceeds this by 100 to 200 fps more..ie: 2600 to 2700 fps..with caution as the key word here....

In factory ammo the 308 is nipping at the heals of factory 30/06 because there’s a lot of older firearms chambered in ‘06 so manufacturers keep it restrained a little. If you reload you can really wake that old 30/06 up to where it’s now nipping on the heals of factory 300wm and the 300wsm.

30-06 holds more powder and has a longer case and can hold larger bullets that's where the advantage comes in with the 30-06. But even though 308 has many similarities to the 30-06 the longer case and more powder capacity is where the 30-06 gains advantage over the 308 but with longer barrel length on the 308 you can burn more powder and push the bullet further with less recoil than 30-06 so I guess that's where the 308 gains its advantage. But both are extremely well hunting rounds. No matter how big of a caliber you have shot placement is always key to putting down your target so that's why it's best no to underestimate any caliber no matter how big or small.

Oh and did you ever read the book called " Shiloh" ? It's about a boy during the depression that is trying to take a beagle home. Has to buy him from a really nasty, abusive deer poacher that didn't want him. The boy had to work for some 6 months picking up glass bottles and working in a store for 5 cents a day. It's actually quite a sad story but we had to read it in fifth grade.

I own both and love both, the only edge I can see is in the short action of the 308 and it cuts a little weight and some feel because it’s a shorter throw on the bolt that they’re a little faster with follow ups. I can’t wait to get my hands on a Impulse by Savage with that straight pull. I just wish they’d offer it in the 6.5 PRC. On another note, and a good one, I plan on having a 300 Win Mag custom built by a well established Gunsmith, he’s taking my 15+ lb “tactical” and turning it into a 7lb rifle. That’s going to be nice lugging it up and down those North Georgia hills looking for Bear. God bless brother and thanks for the videos.

Cool…let’s not forget newton’s laws…heavy/ more mass is harder to get in motion, but also harder to stop this motion…this should give you greater penetration with the 220 gr. Just a thought.
@unbalancedredneck5778
@unbalancedredneck5778 2 жыл бұрын
The 220 gr is really a specialty bullet where penetration is a concern. When I choose a heavy bullet like that I’m more concerned with sectional density and do not care about BC. When it comes to deer hunting my personal ethical limit is 300 yds and I’d bet 300 and in is most of the hunters limit on a deer anyway. Inside 300 the difference is negligible if you toss out the 220. 30-06 is definitely more energy and less drop but the real question is inside ethical hunting ranges does that little bit more even matter? The 308 is ample on any deer so the extra is really unnecessary. You also figure the extra power you don’t need comes at the cost of additional recoil. With all that being said I use the 30-06 usually loaded to 308 velocities because that’s what I have. Cool video
