Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

I have a Savage model 110-E that my dad bought for me in 1985. Heavy trigger but consistent. Heavy rifle too. My brother had a beautiful Ruger model 77. Both chambered in 30-06. I always had better groups than my brother. We had some fun competitions. We deer hunted in the mountains of WV. I was young so the weight of that 110 never bothered me. Great old rifle that still shoots amazingly well. Sadly, my brother passed away 1.5 years ago. Enjoy your time while you have it fellas, you never know when things will change! Make those memories!!

That CZ must be the grade a wood. The standard American retails for $750ish.

FYI, the CZ 600 American retails around 750-800, much less than the MSRP quoted. I have one in 30-06 and I love it. You can leave magazine in locked position and load it like a blind mag from the top. I don’t think there is another rifle in that price point that looks so good or ticks so many boxes.

The 600 Alpha is even less, around $590, I have a Lux, Alpha and a Range. They all shoot under 1 moa at 100 yards. The Range (6mm creedmoor) , shoots 5 shots under 1/2 moa, CZ's Guarantee claim, is it will shoot 5 shots under 3/4 MOA at 100 m with match ammo., I was using federal match . I think they had the MSRP of the Range, it's more of a bench gun. I was a little frustrated when they couldn't figure out the safety, especially when Ron said, "we got to take the stock off and fix it"; I'm glad they figured it out.

I bought a Remington 783 30-06 a couple years back for around $350, i love the AccuTrigger on it, its an accurate rifle. The only things I would change on the rifle is replace the injection molded stock and the scope, although the scope isn't really that bad. The trigger came set at 2 1/2 pounds.

Mine like 165/168 grains. With H4350 and Reloader 16 my groups are 3/4 inch and run 2930-2950 range (Rifle was built for my Grandfather back in early 1970's so 3/4 groups then was a very good Rifle and it was and still is).

@brianhoxworth3881 if beretta were chambering the brx 1 in 270 I would have gotten that instead. I've switched to copper projectiles and want to keep the speed up, hence 30-06>308.

Kind of expected a Ruger American to be there. The Mossberg Patriot is a sleeper and thought to be not good because of the price point. I am not a fan of skinny barrels. I bought one of these just because of its features and light weight. Glad I did it will be a good hunting rifle. It did not get MOA with Hornady factory ammo, but I have got sub-MOA with handloads. I did get the higher end one and put an EC-tuner brake on it. BTW the one I got was not a 30-06 but a 7mm PRC. Lots of 30-06's out there but honestly, they are not the best choice with all there is in the market today. I do have one but I'm a gun nut and have a lot of rifles that are not all that, but still nice to have and shoot. Even though the CZ is not real budget rifle it was nice to see all the great features it has. Great video as always.

The clear winner, HOWA 1500. It's lightweight, shoots under moa/.25 inches with 150 or heavy 180 grain. It has every feature that made the Winchester pre 64' great, and added an adjustable trigger. Not so long ago You could pick up a barreled action between $400 and $500. I don't own a Mossberg but seeing the comments on here most say pass on them. The CZ at $1300 is not budget friendly imo, and the groups were disappointing to say the least. Thank you Ron, to test the HOWA 1500. 😊

Howa 1500 for me. Solid machined receiver with integrated recoil lug, excellent two stage trigger, three position safety, one piece bolt with sako style claw extractor. I've probably said it before but that mossberg patriot is the biggest pile I've ever owned. Your shot group is pretty consistent. Over numerous rifles in multiple calibers. They will shoot a decent 2 shot group then completely fall off the cliff by shot 5. The 300 win mag I rebuilt into something else would send 2 shots under .60 but never had a 5 shot group under 5" from shots 3-5 there was no consistency in high low left right etc. That fluted barrel just became a noodle. Fast forward 1200-1500rounds we tore it down corrected the face of the action and rebarrelled it with a mid grade pencil barrel now have a rifle that will shoot a 5 round group under 2" at 300 yards vs 5" at 100

The comparison between bullet weight and accuracy is pointless. It only proves that there is a combination on the table that works well in some of the rifles. To truly accurize a gun, it needs a load work up done to find the harmonic nodes. For example.....2 days ago I did 3 different powder charges in with 110gr heads in a Sears 53 beater (post 64 Model 70) 30-06 ~ 3250 fps groups were 1.25, .75, 1.0. I'll keep trying to dial it in.

Not a fan of Mossberg rifles myself. They look alright, looks wise, but they are not well made on how receiver mates to stocks. Basically no recoil lug support, and some were breaking at that weak point in the stock. I like their shotguns though. The Ruger RAR, Howa, Savage Trail Hunter, possibly Weatherby Vanguard if find deal, are probably your best options for budget rifles at this particular time. Don't waste your hard earned money on junk, and I would consider the Mossberg rifles junk, compared to the other options, for longevity reasons. The Remington 783 is worth a mention too, and something budget, but better built than the Mossberg. Sadly T/C is still not making rifles that I am aware of, but their Venture was a decent rifle. A good shape decent savage 10 or 110 series would be worth looking into for a budget rifle as they always seem to shoot pretty decent.

Japanese glass isn’t a disadvantage at all. The Vortex Razor HD (top tier scope) has Japanese glass. Japanese glass is slightly less high contrast and the colours are slightly less “warm”but in general Japanese glass is very sharp and has unrivalled edge to edge picture quality
@BusterBibb
@BusterBibb 3 ай бұрын
Let’s be clear…though I’m not sure now but I do know that years ago Leupold used Japanese glass as well..but again I don’t know if currently. Japanese glass was at one point simply the best optic glass. I had some issues on two Leupold scopes back in 2009…Leupold..Leupold warranty shop insisted there was nothing wrong with those scopes even though the scopes would not hold zero. I began using Bushnell elite series scopes snd never looked back. After Bushnell install on my Savsge 30-06 test firing proved conclusively that the Leupold Vari X 2 line of scopes were pure garbage. I sent one of the Leupold scopes back one last time with the sight in target using the Bushnell Elite…getting confirmation Leupold warranty shop had received the scope..I called the shop and was rudely berated (true!) snd the dude hung up on me. I called back of course…spoke to another rep and aired my frustration of Leupolds inferior scope line. Scope sent back snd as expected..wasn’t fixed. Just saying…Japanese glass in well built scopes..I’m all in!
@BusterBibb
@BusterBibb 3 ай бұрын
And Leupold lost a lot of loyal customers because of shotty scopes that Leupold tried to market namely those Vari X 2’s with Leupolds Friction Adjustment Turrets. I spoke to a Leupold sales rep at one particular event..he 100% said that line was a total flop and nearly 60% of those scopes failed. Let’s be clear…the Vari X 2’s were not cheap costing..lower than Vari X 3’s but still pricy. I now have approximately 15 Bushnell Elite scopes. Had problem with one of those 15..Bushnell “Replaced” that scope with a higher Elite model..no charge!! Take that Leupold!!

Usually, budget rifles have incredibly lousy triggers. The exception is the HAP trigger. With any new rifle, it takes a bit before it settles in. Of course always push a few patches through the bore before you shoot it for the first time.

Yeah I would never ever run a new barrel without first scrubbing the bore plus running nylon brush snd oil patches through the bore after each shot during break in. Okay I’m old school…it’s worked for me for a very long time and should be practiced on every new barrel. Thankfully those aren’t my rifles so someone can do whatever they want…it’s just not a fair representation of accuracy potential of budget rifles. Oh well .

Been waiting on this series. My favourite cartridge! Yes. Everyone has a different budget, but comparing $1,000+ rifles to a $500 rifle isn't fair. Your budget rifles should have been the Mosssberg you used, a Savage Axis, and a Ruger American. THOSE are low-budget entry rifles. I have very few rifles that top above $1,500 and they ALL shoot well. The rifles I have chambered for .30-06 are not high-end. I have a Mossberg 100 ATR that shoots 5/8" groups all day with my loads in all weights I have a Savage Axis (I don't really like it because of the cheap stock, but it shoots 13/16" groups with Federal blue box ammo, and so I won't reload for it). I have a Savage 111 with a laminated thumbh9le stock (that put the price up into the $1,200 range) that shoots CLOVERLEAF groups with reloads. I have a re-barrelled K-98 Mauser with open sights that easily shoots 2" groups with reloads (this is on its way to becoming a 35 Whelan for a bison hunt next winter). As my most expensive rifle, I have a Ruger M77 Hawkeye (purchased second-hand) that shoots 1/2" groupswith 165gr Corelokt ammo. Being an "everyman" hunter, my scopes are not high-end, either, but I fill my tags every season, no matter which tags I get.

I had bought a use 30 year old Sako 75 308 win and I easily get sub moa 5 shot groups with it. After getting such accuracy either it I sold my old Remington rifles and bought a Tikka 300 WSM. Just as good accuracy as the old Sako I have, but I added a vertical tikka grip and a limbsaver recoil pad. My next rifle is going to be a Tikka, or a used Sako 85 finnlite if I get a good price on one.

Ron. Dropping floor plate with a picatinny rail across the action can easily be loaded from the bottom. Actually, I load ALL my floor plate rifles this way. Open the floor plate. Turn the rifle upside down and point a bit low. Drop 3 rounds in. Close the floor plate as you give the rifle a shake. Open the action. Everything is ready to go. Chamber a round.

I know that the Howa is going to be one of the most accurate because I have a couple of them if you will test one. My Howa 30/06 pokes 3 rounds into a single jagged hole when I let the barrel cool off for fifteen minutes between shots.

Brownells has barreled Howa actions. A guy could buy one of those and then add his stock of choice.

Don't get me wrong I think this is a very well done video. But as you said real tests are 10,20 rounds to get it's real group. Everyone does these 3 rounds shots. I would love to see a box or more to see where a rifle shoots let it heat up, maybe not let it cool but same box per rifle

Why? Shooting a sporter weight barrel on a hunting rifle…hunting rifles are not target rifles. I own a lot of hunting rifles..I’ve hunted all across the western US…there’s 100% no reason to heat up a sporter weight barrel. Pull three shots then run a nylon brush down that bore….run a solvent patch snd let the barrel cool. Like cool before these 3 shots. Shoot three shits again and compare. 3 shot groups bare normal for a magnum rifle..yes? Why crispy critter the throat of that barrel? It’s pointless and I’m not alone with this thought. Point is and as Ron pointed out…if you take more thanv3 shots at an animal..you’re either a poor shit..the animal is way way too far to shoot at..or you need to work on the rifle cause there’s something wrong. My hunting rifles with factory barrels hold very very acceptable accuracy but not one has a Tupperware stock. Not one. Most had a Boyd’s laminate stock installed and epoxy bedded with better than decent rings snd mounts with scope being aligned correctly. Just about perfect alignment no less. But burn that barrel? Each to there own but it’s pointless.

@@BusterBibb my test would have little to do with hunting. But when one is at the range putting ammo down range barrel's and accuracy changes. Would be nice to know...........

There’s techniques used I’d like to know too..such as was a quality scope alignment bars/tool used to be certain there was no stress on the scopes caused by warped actions since a lot of factory actions are warped. And if so..we’re the rings lapped to help relieve the warp stress. I’m saying probably not which means this test wasn’t viable. Just saying
