I was just trying to make this and I had the exact same issues with the placket! My button holes ended up on the wrong part too. I did interface the left placket after I figured that out. I think next time I would just make both sides like the left and just do a regular placket where you see the buttons. I also made mine out of a linen/rayon blend which I think was too heavy as well and had the same issue turning the drawstring. I think this needs to be made of something very light to look like hers in the photo. I will definately give this another go, maybe even just in shirt form. Thank you for reviewing this! Glad I am not alone in the struggle

Ashley, I LOVE your idea of having both plackets mades like the left one. That makes so much more sense. I actually wouldn't mind the buttons showing. Great idea!! I'll pin this comment.

Ashley T that placket! I never have done one with the interfacing done that way. I just did a review on my channel if you want to check it out.

Such a nice look on you. I agree that the shorter version would look great in a lighter weight drapey beautiful print. You could even wear it as a layering piece and leave open or partially open. Nice work!!

This outfit looks amazing on you Natieda. I always feel long outfits dont do anything for my figure unless I break it up with a belt but on you I love this!! I can really see the weightloss feels great doesnt it! I dont sew many big 4 but do have a couple of Mimi G patterns so was interested to see. I made the mans shirt in her pattern and ended up messing up the sleeve placket (and resorting to short sleeves) because I was following the sewalong but it was so blown out with lighting that I couldnt see the details they were talking about. Anyway, I love to watch your reviews as we are similar in size and you give such good info so thanks for sharing x

Thanks so much Claire, glad you found it helpful. I think with the drawstring, it really helps with breaking up the design a bit so it doesn't look like I'm wearing a big sheet - LOL! Thanks so much for watching.

Hi Natieda, your dress looked fantastic on you and you look amazing in it 💕😁. Loving your confused little green Man 😂. The fabric was spot on for that dress and I bet that you wear it a lot...a real staple in your wardrobe I would think 👌😁💝😘

Thanks for sharing. I made this last year and I also had issues with the placket mainly because my fabric was slippery and I didn't cut them very straight because of being in a hurry--sewing for a cruise vacation. Anyway, the right placket folds over to cover the buttons when buttoned. In other words, it is more like a flap. That's how you would have been able to easily button. I wished that I could post a pic to better show you--I'm visual as well. I really do love the pattern. If I make it again, I will do a bust adjustment so that the placket doesn't gap . I ended up pinning it down strategically .
@SewNaturalDane
@SewNaturalDane 5 жыл бұрын
You know that's what I was thinking, but it probably didn't turn out the way it should have since I had so many issues with the placket. I do want to try the shorter version in a more drapey fabric. Thanks so much for watching.

It was smart of you to make the smaller size & it looks so good on you! I love your fabric. This is only a suggestion.......A)sew down front of skirt (with matching blue thread) at bottom of waist casing down as far to the hem as you like & also in the placket starting at the top at neck or only in areas between buttonholes starting well under one buttonhole & stopping well above the next to give you as much room needed to button up with ease B)Instead of sewing in these areas use the heat bond in the ways I described I always look forward to your videos, thanks so much! God Bless.
@SewNaturalDane
@SewNaturalDane 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much K! Actually, I didn't want to do matching thread on this piece. You probably didn't see my last video, but I purposefully chose orange with orange buttons to give it some contrast. I LOVE heat bond, this stuff is so useful for areas as you mentioned that you don't want to sew. Thanks so much for watching.

Regarding the placket interfacing, the left placket pattern piece showed an area that read 'line for interfacing' but the right placket pattern piece did not. However in her video, Mimi G interfaced the right one (obviously because the buttonholes were being sewn on that one) but she didn't interface the left one. This initially caused me a lot of confusion and I ended up interfacing both placket pieces just in case.

Great dress Nateida! I love that fabric it does look like a silky denim dress! I hear you about that button placket...I made one item with a placket and don’t like trying to button it either...it is weird! And I love, love, love your idea of using the “heat n bond” on the collar stand, marvelous idea! BTW, you’re Dune tank is in a gorgeous print! I love it! Did you show it in another video before?
@SewNaturalDane
@SewNaturalDane 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you Myra! Yep, the Dune tank was featured in a video when Valentine & Stitch was still around, so that was maybe over a year ago. Ok, GOOD it wasn't just me with the hidden placket. I was like "HUH, WHAT IS THIS". Next time, I will do my right placket just like the left placket, just like one of my subbies mentioned, I don't mind my buttons showing. Thanks for watching.

I have cut this out and I think I will start it tomorrow. I can see how you got confused with the front bands. I did a quick read through, and tomorrow I will need to study it more carefully. I am making the shorter version with side slits, to be worn over leggings.

Carole, you'll probably get on with it better than I did. From reviews I've seen, I hadn't seen anyone mention the trickiness of the bands and collar.

Your dress came out so well. It really suits you. I have just cut this out and just waiting for a chance to get started. I feel like lining the skirt part because the rayon I am using is quite light weight.... I am now re-thinking that just because it will be the most significant sized project in a while... Wearable muslin loading 😬 Thank you for the informative video 😊

I have a book entitled"Sewing for Plus Sizes, Design, Fit, and Construction for Ample Apparel" by Barbara Deckert published in 1999 by Taunton Books & Videos. Found it at an Estate Sale. I have found it very informative. You may have it. It covers lots of areas of sewing. I don't know if it's still in print.

thank you for the video, but my problem also is, how do I know where to place the buttonhole guide? I mean how high to begin on the front piece? I can't see any markings...

Hey there, I usually do not use the the buttonhole guide that comes with patterns. I mark where I want the buttons to be placed, based on where I like buttons to hit on my body. Hope that helps and thanks so much for watching.

Thank you for this review, as I mentioned before I bought it and will be sewing it for my daughter. I completely agree on lining the yoke! I had not looked closely enough to know it has a drawstring, which is a nice modern touch. Your dress turned out really pretty. How about using a coordinating yellow paracord drawstring? I will be making the shorter version.

Thanks so much Carole, glad you found it use. No, I wanted to keep the drawstring the same fabric as the dress for this version.
