Thanks for taking me along on your port visit at Puerto Limon. In Nov 2022 on our way to Panama Canal we missed this port due to a distressed migrant boat full with 22 people mostly children….our cruise ship stayed with the boat until the Coast Guard showed up and we missed the port. Nice to visit places with you Kevin. Enjoy your cruise.

We also generally do not take cruise line shore excursions -- unless the port and destination are a very long distance apart and without good public transportation options (like Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City). Like you, we much prefer exploring on our own and having a more authentic experience. We generally will wander through the food markets, chat with locals over a cup of coffee, and try to find a special souvenir at a thrift store.

walk until you day gets interesting is my motto 😊

When you go in the shops, be sure to check labels. You’ll find a lot of “made in china” or other Asian countries. If you’re ok with that, fine. But if you want to buy local, you need to check. Also, when I was there last year, there was human excrement all over the place. On sidewalks, streets, etc. Really disgusting. We went back to the ship after a short while.
