Sam, an interesting analysis of the comparison study-as always! But I’m a small, inexpensive car guy. So for me, your programs on low-priced EVs light my fire; e.g., your recent report on the $14,000. Geely. So, do keep us old fixed-income geezers in mind when you are prepping your reports. In spite of this small caveat, you’re the best. Frequently, I share your programming with my grandson, who just got his driver’s license: one geezer driver out, one teen-aged driver in. I live in Norway, have a 2021 model 3; My brother-in-law has the BYD. I can definitely confirm these tests are the real deal. The BYD suv is very good, and only getting better.

I no longer think range is a problem with BEV's. Once you get beyond 400km per charge it would cover more than 97% of all usual travel. 97% of most peoples trips are under 120km so at 400km range it would only affect a few large distance drivers in regards to range.

AFAIK, Dongchedi, a Chinese automotive media, has its own winter EVs large group test too. "Dongchedi conducted a winter range test of 41 EVs in November 2021. The test vehicles included pure electric, hybrid, and extended program electric vehicles, and were tested for range, charging, air conditioning, cold start, and other winter issues. NIO EC6 achieved 336.9 km, with a winter range achievement rate of 54.78%, making it number one. The Second went to the XPENG P7, which achieved 316.2km of real range. Third place went to the Zeekr 001 with a final range of 298.4km." No any BYD in the top ten list.

i went to see the test they conducted. it's a freaking joke. They arent even testing the range. Some cars had 20km 40km attached. I saw the Tang DM range at 44km.. HAHAHAHA.. Their barometer was when the tang activated their hybrid system to be more efficient while maintaining performance. They put the tang at 44km because they got pissed they couldnt switch to full EV motor.. A test that says the Tang DM range is 44km?? Ya right. Worst test i've seen in a long while. They better stay in china and fool the ignorant. As for you, i dont know what your motive is, but stop misleading people. You have been marked.

the new Tang with 6 seats and more battery thus more range is the model to go, imo. if one wants more tech geeky feeling AND luxury features AND size, ES8 is worth considering, albeit a bit more expensive. those two are pretty much the only affordable full size pure electric suv's right now. There is another EHS9 but that one is probably too plush for family use. Tang ev has sold about 2100 units in Norway, a country with 5 mil population, in the last 12 months. that is not too shabby.

Surely the external temperature is irrelevant if there is an internal temperature control system? The only drop in efficiency would be caused by the generation of heat or use of cooling refrigeration? The Chinese are coming. Is it a surprise? The main car makers source over half their components from China FOR CARS SOKD IN EUROPE. Why should Chinese cars be inferior when the same CHINESE components go into ALL cars?

I detect a clear bias in favor of BYD. I suspect that is because you perceive a very high value in that company's line of vehicles. You seem to 'need' or 'desire' a four-wheel drive SUV with seven seats. And, I have to admit, you've piqued my curiosity about BYD as well. And, as one Viking to another, I really enjoy your channel and your commentary.

Not only do westerners not know the BYD brand (they will), BYD needs to rename their models, in the west. Tang? Powdered fake OJ? Why not call it something like Cascadia, or some other US place name (think Telluride, Sequoia, etc.). Their marketing leaves something to be desired. Seems like a great BEV though.

Thanks Sam. Great video, as always. Two points: 1) Isn't the Tesla Model X a 4 wheel drive, 7 seater SUV? 2) Towing capacity of 1.5 tonnes is the biggest you've seen for any EV? There's a recent video on KZbin with a Ford F-150 Lightning towing a 6,000 pound caravan. That's 2.67 tonnes. Its maximum load wasn't mentioned.

I don't think it is sold outside the US yet. Also imagine some unknown Chinese company delivered a few times more cars in a 5 million people country than Rivian did in the US (that is if what I found is correct and they had avout 2100 cars delivered until early May).

I’m curious. When you said the tests were done at freezing temperatures, what were they? -1C -20C -40C? The ranges do degrade even more as it gets colder. As a Canadian who is looking for his first electric vehicle, I’d like to know the ranges at worst case scenarios for my location.

@@lesliecarter4295 I guess that depends on where you are in the world. -10c is extreme where I am and just a few hours drive away anything below 16c is considered cold with anything below 0c being intolerable. At least there is a benchmark that you could extrapolate from.

Based on your judgement on EQS, that means a van should cost more than an eqs ‘cause it has mare space and bigger trunk. EQS is luxury. Is above premium. The downside of it is actually the weight

Sam, these tests were conducted on dry roads at temperatures ranging from Zero down to minus 10 degrees. Real winter data needs to be at much lower temperatures down to at least - 25, and with snow and ice. Then you will then see the degradation is typically 25 to 35%, and there are many tests on youtube backing this up.

Sam mate! Off topic but..., that Amoxycillin story scared the crap out of me (for you)..., here's why... About 1yr ago my wife was given a penicilin-based antibiotic (one she had had before) and broke out in a rash..., started getting hot, her head started getting weird - called local pharmacy (where we got the drugs), suggested we "might" want to take her to hospital (weekend) or come up to the pharmacy. So I raced her up to the pharmacy (closer) like a mad man (she was in medical distress), the guy took one look at her and hit her with an epi-pen - saved her life...! Batteries weaken when too warm. It may be that, with a smart heat pump monitoring and maintaining ideal temp in the battery pack, the main loss here came from driving on snow and ice.

How much of the range reduction is due to batteries being affected by the cold and how much is the drain from the heater? I would like to see how much battery power would be used when it is parked for the same time as the driving test just maintaining the temperature.
