My Tesla MY was great in the snow up in the Wasatch with 4 proper snows. I think AWD EVs tend to make pretty great winter vehicles, so long as you can charge at home and the range isn’t an issue. That said, I would always choose a vehicle with 4 snows over any other vehcile on all seasons (AWD w/ all weather might work). I think you guys are spot on with a number of the EV-specific benefits in cold weather - pre-conditioning being especially great on cold dark mornings, etc. For what it’s worth, I would not get another EV (maybe any vehicle at this point) that relies on a touch screen, but does not have a heated steering wheel. If you need bare fingers to operate your vehicle that can only be accessed through a touch screen, having a steering wheel that requires you to wear gloves until the steering wheel warms up makes no sense to me. I know there’s a tendency to favor trucks in the winter, but the big downside with trucks (and all EVs) in winter driving is the weight. While that weight is great for traction, you also have to slow all that weight down and get it around turns. It’s not unusual to see trucks and big SUVs off the road in snow for exactly that reason (also - most don’t bother to run snows, another issue). Getting going in the snow is quite a bit different than turning and stopping. 4 proper snow tires are always worth it (IMHO) regardless of how good the vehicle might otherwise be. Looking forward to so more snow tires tests one of these days soon!

You guys really don’t like teslas 😂 I am definitely a fan of all the EVs in this list but it’s hard to ignore what Tesla is doing. And in the winter when range goes down, don’t you think it’s important to have access to a reliable charging network? Seems very important to me.

Heat pump+ Preconditioning + access to Level 2 at Home most important for EV efficiency in winter. Dual Motor + Snow Tires needed for traction. My early Hyundai Ioniq 5 has no preconditioning. Takes 15 mins DCFC in cold temps to get over 60kWh. My LFP TM3 with preconditioning starts at 90kWh. TMY is best all around due to having it all plus supercharging network.

True, but 1) not many people can afford it, 2) not many people want a hyper-masculine truck, 3) they don’t make enough, and 4) it’s just not a practical vehicle for 1,000s of reasons.

Thanks for the video. I would really like to see some “real world” testing of EV’s in really cold temperatures. In Minnesota, 35 F in the winter and the college kids are back in shorts and T-shirts. So I would like to know what happens when the temperatures are below 0 F even down to -30 F. How are the heat pumps going to perform then? It’s difficult to get heat out of some ICE vehicles at those temperatures. In fact, many people use to block the radiator inlet just to keep warm in the vehicle. Also, I don’t know how one compares a truck to a car for snow handling. Wait until it snows 12+ inches overnight and one has to get to work before roads have been plowed. I don’t think the Ionic 5 or Mercedes EQS are going to fair well against the Rivian R1T and R1S and the Lightning F150.

Good stuff! I like your picks. IF I were going to buy an EV vehicle, your input is a definite influence. The EQS, Rivian truck and even the Hyundai Ionic 5 get my attention. Just don't really need any of them atm. lol

Are EV batteries greatly effected by the cold temps, range, charging, etc?
@shawnsquire7984
@shawnsquire7984 Жыл бұрын
This greatly depends on the vehicle you buy. If you get one with battery preconditioning, it will pre-warm your battery before a charging stop so you get optimal speeds even if colder weather. If you get a vehicle with a heat pump, it will use residual heat from the battery to heat the cabin before using the electric heater to help conserve energy and reduce the range loss. Quite a few EVs out there have both, which are a must if you live in a colder climate like the northern US or Canada. I personally have a Kia EV6 and love it.

@@snupermoto723 to make it easy, when shopping for an ev, concider it's real world range to be half it's epa range and check your charging options around you. Remember that charging stations don't always work, so you might have to go to the next one. The half range rule can save you from range anxiety. Ev fans hate to hear this but we're still in early adopter phase.

American obsession with AWD! I live in north Scandinavia where we have snow roads (= and I mean real white snow roads) for more than half the year, still 80% of cars are 2wd with good winter tires. No problems at all. Unless you drive up skiing slopes in Colorado regularly I see no reason why 4wd is a must.

My Bolt EV works great. Could use a bit more ground clearance but snow tires are the only thing you need. I live in Alberta 2 weeks ago the coldest place on Earth. Cold saps range very cold about 45% of EPA range or less because of the Heater. You have to have the heater on all the time.

Always mentioning the efficiency of a heat pump but I would like to watch how it compares to the gas powered vehicle heater. Guessing EVs doesn't have the slow heater warm up time but will the heater blow as hot after warm up? If the EV heat pump is anything like a residential heat pump that always feels like it's blowing cold air then they can't compete. Been curious on that topic and been waiting around for the cooler temps to allow someone to compare.

Our Ioniq 5 with the heat pump in Colorado winters provides nice even heat. You don't need super hot air blasting out to maintain a comfortable cabin. It warms up much quicker than our Tacoma. BTW Our air source heat pump does a great job both heating and cooling the house.

We live in Michigan, and we've towed a Little Guy 6x10 Silver Shadow with a Transit Connect. We wanted the VW ID4, but just couldn't afford it. It would have towed the 1190 lb teardrop no problem. We ended up with a Bolt EUV which would likely tow it. GM doesn't recommend towing though. Have to sell our camper. 😒

@Canuyerdome
@Canuyerdome Жыл бұрын
Noone. When it comes to EV's today, every other car manufacturer on earth is trailing Tesla in technology. That's not to say there aren't compelling reasons to own non-Tesla EV's, but from an owner, and a passionate car enthusiast, The Tesla experience is unmatched as a day to day car when the entire package is considered. I find the comment in the video about their cars being "old" hilarious, since Tesla is without a doubt the most active company updating their vehicles right through the lineup constantly. I don't need "a new wing" to make my car new. I do however appreciate that Tesla added Heat Pumps to the existing Model 3 when it became evident that it was a vast boost in efficiency, didn't need to release a whole new car or add a "Winter Package" premium like every other manufacturer would have done.
