The Drive Inside - thanks for the feedback! Not much road noise at all but I’m using a ton of Second Skin Luxury Liner Pro to knock down road noise. The carbon tub covers everything around the driver except right around the seat and the foot box forward of the ~knees. It’s hard to see in the video but I have carpet between the seat and the seat pan, and carpeting on the floor and sides of the foot box as well. There’s an aluminum panel my feet rest on so my heels don’t totally tear up the carpet.

Looks great, love the green! Is it fast enough for you or do you wish you would have gone with a little more hp?
@CamThai
@CamThai 5 жыл бұрын
Mike Bahia - thanks! I was talking to another SLC builder and he said this, and I think it rings true. I wouldn’t want more or less power. I think it’s one of those things, once you get a taste or accustomed to a certain power level you wouldn’t want less. But I think these cars are already fairly overpowered at 500+hp that it’s a bit silly to want more. It becomes more difficult to drive or use unless you are into drag racing/high speed events. I’m good with where I’m at!

@@CamThai That is good advice. It makes more sense to have balance and enjoy the car than win horsepower competitions. I would like to build one with track qualities that can go across the country. Such an awesome car. I hope to start an SLC build soon but the Cdn dollar is below the US (i'm in Canada) the car is 33% more expensive at the moment, along with all the other pieces that will likely come from the US. That's around $80k Cdn and that's with no engine or transmission....so I am jealous....the carbon fiber looks good and your dash reconfiguration is bananas. The only thing I would recommend is the colour of the interior door but I understand, I guess your original plan was orange....
@CamThai
@CamThai 5 жыл бұрын
Mike Bahia - lol yeah, I was originally going for an orange/black theme and the red threw me for a surprise. I have some new door cards I’m working on that will be standard black carbon to replace the red. Best of luck with the future project if you decide to jump on it. I definitely understand you on the exchange - I took out student loans in Canadian $ (for a US school) when it was ~30% in favor of USD then had to repay those loans when cdn $ was at par or stronger than USD. Double screwed.

Are all the carbon fiber pieces real carbon fiber or are some vinyl wraps that look like carbon fiber? Do you really need the grate over the radiator exhaust since all the leaves would blow out when you drive? What are you protecting against that will destroy the front radiator? (I assume something BAD happened in the past)
@CamThai
@CamThai 5 жыл бұрын
There is no carbon vinyl on the car, everything carbon is either solid carbon or (real) carbon fiber applied to a fiberglass substrate. I prefer to have the grate over the radiator exhaust, I suppose leaves and whatever else fall in there would get blown out eventually but why let stuff collect in there at all? Just my own OCD I guess. If it were a track/race car I'd leave the grate off but I don't think it's appreciably restricting the flow on my application. The decision to add the grate isn't based on something happening in the past. It's an extra layer of protection just because.

Really nice build, and the custom touches are outstanding. I am very interested in how the time investment of this project stacked up. How did it compare to estimates that are out there? I find that kits often claim X hours to bolt together, but if you actually want to pay attention to detail it is often doubled, and you end up mocking up and redo-ing several times to fix something that isn't quite as advertised. Then, you went the additional steps of going after fit and finish. An example of what I mean is like finding you can't pull the wheels when the car is in full droop. So, I am betting you have maybe 3x time in this to get everything as you liked it? Did you keep track of real hours? Thanks!
@CamThai
@CamThai 5 жыл бұрын
kwasg3 - thanks for the feedback! I’ve heard 500 hours to build this and I think Allan/Zakari is at about that for a street car, but he’s built over 20 of these now and he’s got a system. It took me about 2400hrs, that’s guessing but I basically spent a calendar year working 8hrs a day, 5 days a week. If you’re working evenings and weekends it will take you longer because of all the breaks that will be inevitable. Note that this is my first component car and I had to deal with a lot of OCD during the build process which slowed me down quite a bit. For a rough track car with ok fitting I think you could build it in 600-700 hrs if this is your first project. The detail work is where you dump all your time - I had it in go-kart mode after about 550hrs. This also assumes you stay with a more cookbook build and don’t customize too much. This car represented a lot of firsts for me - first time working with fiberglass, carbon fiber, bodywork, paint, wiring, etc. I really didn’t know what I was getting myself into!

@CamThai 5 жыл бұрын
@Portable Electric Vehicle - 2400hrs because I work slowly ... I'm guessing you haven't been around custom built cars, they can (and should) take a lot of time. You can buy all the parts at one time and have the entire car in pieces in your garage. SLC builds typically range from about 80-120k in materials for a nice street car, less for track oriented builds.

Is it everything you expected? It is a lot of money for a Kit Car. Would you do it again or just buy a R8? Does it actually perform ell in corners or is it a pain to drive? I know Kit cars is nothing like OEM but how good or bad is it?
@CamThai
@CamThai 5 жыл бұрын
ZGERMAN - it's mostly what I expected. I had to change my expectations along the way a bit when I discovered my fabrication skills weren't up to snuff. Everyone wants to build an oem-like car but realistically very few people have the ability to make that happen. Even outsourcing a bunch of stuff, very few shops can produce oem level fit/finish for interiors. "It's a lot of money for a kit car" - depends on what your definition of a lot is, and what your goals were. $30 is a lot of money for a piece of cardboard with a picture on it, but reasonable for a puzzle. So part of what you're paying for is the experience of putting this all together yourself. The car corners and drives well for the streets/canyons. You can't reach the limit of this car on the streets safely. I don't really intend to track the car but those who have tracked the car say its capabilities are extremely high. The "base kit" offered by Superlite is really meant for a street car. Heavy track or race usage requires upgrading to the race suspension/heavy duty options. It's only a pain to drive if you built the car incorrectly or poorly. Fortunately my car drives straight and isn't at all darty. It moves pretty effortlessly between lanes and I can take my hands off at ~80mph and it tracks and brakes straight. How "good or bad" it is is a function of how well it was built. I've seen the full range of SLCs now and the bad ones ... are bad. The good ones aren't oem fit/finish/quiet, but that's not your highest priority if you want to own an SLC. R8 - funny enough, I considered buying an R8 for a very long time but my wife convinced me to get an S5 (more practical). After all is said and done, I could have purchased a new R8 for the price of the SLC and S5. Would I do the R8 knowing what I know now? DEFINITELY NOT. I've come to realize the R8 just isn't the car for me. It doesn't move me the way the SLC does. I've also discovered that many exotics just don't interest me the same any more. The SLC has definitely tweaked my view of what an exotic or unique car really is. I don't know what it's like to go cruising around in a lambo/ferrari/exotic whatever, but I can tell you the crowds and looks I get in the SLC are on that order or more. I get smiles, thumbs up, and cameras pulled out every time I'm in the car. Koenigsegg has been the most popular guess thrown my way so far.

rs murdoch I’m no aerodynamicist, but it looks like your angle combined with the profile would be generating lift. I think there is a thread about race setup on the GT40 forum. See what they suggest and dial it back form there. IMHO. Nice build. Doing the preliminary on one myself. Did you drop in on Fran before buying? If so, was it worth the trip?
@The4valanche
@The4valanche 5 жыл бұрын
@@andrewlangley9507 Holy sh*t you are right, that angle is AWFUL. It's rotated so far back that it forms a U shape towards the horizontal plane. There is no way the air flow will adhere. It WILL generate lift, no doubt about it.
@andrewlangley9507
@andrewlangley9507 5 жыл бұрын
Huxxy At some point, a wings angle of attack prevents the profile from generating lift. (Or downforce in this case.) Imagine if the leading edge was sitting 1” above the trailing edge. The only unknown is whether or not his current setup is past that point. Look at any wing on cars that require them for downforce. They simply are not setup this way.
@CamThai
@CamThai 5 жыл бұрын
@Andrew Langley - hey sorry, just saw this comment. The wing angle I've got it on is pretty aggressive actually. Going much more and the trade between downforce and drag gets less optimized - and for the street having a crazy amount of downforce just isn't necessary. As far as I know, I'm the only one who's done a study on wing angle, you won't find any discussion of wing angles or (actual) recommendations on GT40s or the wiki. If you're super into it, do a search for the Selig 1223 airfoil design and you can come to your own conclusions. Or check out my blog post here: socalslc.com/2018/09/29/53-red-bull-gives-you/ At the time of the video, I had the rear wing on setting 2. A lot of people get stuck on the idea that rear wings should be canted at a ~30-degree angle; a properly designed wing doesn't work by having air slam into it to "push it down". A properly designed wing works by having air BELOW the wing move faster than the air above it, creating a low pressure zone and "sucking" the wing down. And while I'm also not an aerodynamicist, I've touched the subject in various engineering classes. I opted to purchase the SLC sight unseen, haven't visited the factory before. For the guys who have visited the factory, everyone's always had a really positive experience.

Definitely prefer the manual option. Too many risks with the electric actuator. Biggest is power outage in case of a wreck. Those actuators have enough holding power to keep you trapped inside. You'd have to break out the glass, don't think you'd be strong enough to knock out the poly side windows.

I love this. Every time I see an SLC, I just think about how I would love to mod this. Give it like 3 years and make it the ultimate car. I absolutely love the twin lights on the back, the carbon fiber scoo, louvers, side skirts and stripe. This thing looks so sick. I’m just imagining here thinking about my ultimate build like “okay. Carrera gt v10. Pdk with paddle shifters.” These cars are literally hand built by their owners so it’s basically always a unique car. Your build looks sick. It looks like a 1000 horsepower supercar

Right on Maybe one day I'll see this at a car show I've been looking into "kit cars " this is at the top of list I've seen a few videos.. Majority use LS motors Couple with v10 or v12s But nobody uses a 600 to 1000hp. 4 cyl or 6cyl
@CamThai
@CamThai 5 жыл бұрын
Eric Salyer - LS motor is the easy way to go with this car. Plenty of guys out there making 600+ hp, mine is probably one of the lower hp cars out there to be honest. First car I saw with the CF10 wheels was a 1500hp SLC. Extreme hp in these cars just makes it harder to drive, especially without any real traction control, stability control, or aids. It’s more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow. ;)

Have you had any issues with the Auto-Vox? I'm not exactly enamored with the unit I'm currently using.
@CamThai
@CamThai 5 жыл бұрын
CRA677 - I've had a few issues with the auto-vox but nothing that wasn't resolved without a reboot. I added a right-angle adapter for the power cord and had noise/flicker issues until I jiggled the cable and moved it around, seems to have fixed it. Have had blocky/broken up image but a power cycle fixed it. Those issues seemed random and have repeated maybe once or only happened once. Otherwise unit has been running fine. I always only use it as a rear camera and do have a memory card installed if that makes any difference.

@CamThai
@CamThai 4 жыл бұрын
Just drive faster! A bit of a joke but also serious ... in a light rain the water gets pushed off the windshield pretty easily by oncoming air. In a heavier rain ... you’d be a bit nuts to keep driving the car, safer to just pull over and wait it out. I didn’t like the look of wiper blades and I’m a fair weather driver only. If it’s going to rain I don’t bother pulling the car out.

Hi, awesome build, loved it. Can you explain how the front lift works? I got a car that's a bit low for the garage I park in, was wondering if theres a way to set up a similar system on mine.
@CamThai
@CamThai 5 жыл бұрын
@Wagner Nascimento - there's a discussion of the lift system on my blog here: socalslc.com/2017/03/04/11-suspended-suspension/ It's basically a hydraulic cylinder that's installed between your spring and spring seat (assuming you have coil-over suspension). When you want to lift the front end you energize a pump that pushes hydraulic fluid into the puck to make it taller. This then pushes down on your suspension and you lift the front end. It's good for about 2-3" on my car. Here's the website for the manufacturer, good folks to work with and very friendly/supportive of their product. www.ramliftpro.com

austin125psnetwork - Thanks, appreciate the kind feedback. It took me about 2400hrs, about a year 8 hours a day, 5 days a week.
