I really like these Kasp branded locks. You don't see them all to often. Great picking. I always really enjoy your series on different lock categories. Its one of the few instances where picking videos become more then just picking videos As you're assessing the over all security of a certain series of lock and then ranking them from worst to best. Even for non pickers this information is quite useful.
@lockpickinglawyer8 жыл бұрын
These locks are much more common in the UK. As for the "series" format, You thoughts echo my own. The series is designed to transform what would otherwise be unremarkable picking videos into something more contextual that might be useful.

You make these locks look like there all easy picks no matter what the keyway,bitting or the security pins are. Awesome series LPL. Thanks for another great video.
@lockpickinglawyer8 жыл бұрын
Thanks, and never forget that what you see is not my first time picking the lock. :-) By the time you see a pick, I've already figured out what pick and tension works best for the lock, which is often more than half the battle.
@bobbykeyz12638 жыл бұрын
+LockPickingLawyer yeah that make sense that you want to understand what the lock is about before putting it on video. If not it could make for a long video. But I also like to see what it takes for a first time pick on a lock. But I'm sure your first time picks are pretty close to what you put up on video.

I recently bought two of these as training locks. Here in the UK, American Locks are hard to come by and, while I have some 1100s/1105s, I had to import them. I also have a couple of Federal 90As and am building up a bit of an accidental collection of this lock type now (oops). I don't yet have the talent to reliably pick any of these as I'm very green, but it looks like I made quite a good choice to add these Kasps to my locksport stash. Thanks for another great video that answers all my questions, as always.

Thanks... As for picking time, I didn't think of it that way, but all of these locks are going to open pretty quickly. I wouldn't read too much into minor variations.

LockPickingLawyer I greatly appreciate you taking the time to do this, and not at all trying to take away from that, but if they are all relatively easy to pick I would think price would play a role here as well. Currently on Amazon you can purchase around 8 to 10 of the Seasamee (Sp?) for the price of 1 of these locks. I only mention this because when it comes to picking it doesn't seem like this is worth the substantial extra money...

I think you were (un)lucky with the bitting on that one. I've got 3 in front of me and I can open two of them with a standard hook. It's only the one with a highest cut at 5 behind a lowest cut at 3 that needs a special pick. You probably had trouble getting at 6 without oversetting something in front.
@lockpickinglawyer8 жыл бұрын
Could be...
@khaitomretro8 жыл бұрын
+LockPickingLawyer Are you counting anything other than a standard hook as specialist or just picks not included in common kits? Having revisited my more difficult Kasp I was very surprised to find I could open it with a Pickology offset-diamond. Previously, like you, I'd used a special hook. I'm looking forward to seeing if anything beats that 14040 :)
@lockpickinglawyer8 жыл бұрын
khaitomretro standard hook in .025"... if that pick can't open it, then it gets the points. Also, I try Peterson, SParrows, HPC and Southord Max products before concluding that a standard hook doesn't work.

Thanks... this one is definitely going to be the one to beat.
@peterestall8 жыл бұрын
I'm probably wrong, but by reckoning it could only be beaten by one point???
@lockpickinglawyer8 жыл бұрын
Pete Restall I think my system maxes out at 33 points, so beating it is definitely possible. Consider a lock with all steel security pins for top and bottom pins (like the American Lock Series 790 - video #164)... You will get 24 points on the pins alone.
@shader264 жыл бұрын
It always amazes me when you have such a small key way and you use bottom of the lock tension how you are able to so easily get to each pin! I have all kinds of trouble even getting the pick in, and when I do it gets hung up on pin one or two, and sometimes get the pick stuck. Wish I knew how you do that so smoothly. I know it’s practice but still...

Nice pick. I know the point system scale is not oriented towards just picking., but It is interesting to see that the system does not directly translate into the difficulty you have in picking any given lock. (Being a noobie, how to you know from the orientation of the tailpiece that it is not bypassable?) - Never mind I see this has already been answered in the comments - Thx.
@lockpickinglawyer8 жыл бұрын
Thanks... there's an odd phenomenon in which particularly poorly made locks are more time consuming to pick because of rough surfaces, inconsistent pins, etc. Notice that I said "time consuming", and not "difficult." :-)

I did like my Kasp but it's in Australia now. I don't remember it having anti-drill pins.

I have two of these, and they both have the anti-drill pins. Maybe yours was an older variant?
@rjperkins3658 жыл бұрын
I keep forgetting I take pictures of everything I pick and they were both anti-drill. Anti-bump also but my cylinder was upside-down so I couldn't really tell if it was countermilled. Yours didn't look it but I'm watching on my phone so I didn't really get a good look.

you should stick an anti bump pin like that in a lock with the rest of pins standard and see if you can still actually bump it...they make those needle like anti bump pins i have some that i could really see working , but these anti bump pins i could still see possibly someone bumping one open....would be a great experiment..
@lockpickinglawyer8 жыл бұрын
I've never really enjoyed bumping that much. I know it's a great and practical entry method... but I pick for fun, and that's not fun to me.

How about half point for spools, full point for serrated.
@lockpickinglawyer8 жыл бұрын
I considered something like that, but I didn't want to get into judging security pins... opens a whole new can of worms. What about the lightly serrated pins? What about serrated spools? What about anti-bump pins? You get the idea.
@pnutdunne818 жыл бұрын
Wow what a dark horse, doubt that will be beaten! But then surely wouldn't show the winner so early in the series? Maybe a countermilled bad-boy up your sleeve 🤔
@lockpickinglawyer8 жыл бұрын
Honestly, It could be the winner. I had not picked most of these locks before starting the series, and have disassembled very few of them. We will see!
@pnutdunne818 жыл бұрын
LockPickingLawyer I had to get one of these and gutted it today. Everything was pretty similar except I had 2 more silvery keypins, I tested them with a magnet and was surprised to find that all of the pins, both brass and silvery were magnetic (not sure what to make of that tbh). Another hidden feature was a stiff steel spring above the antibump pin. The real surprise was that the core is counter-milled! I don't think it affected the picking much but it's there. I stuck a pic on ukls what I picked today if you want to see for yourself.

What about the core? Is there any counter-milling or anything in it?
@lockpickinglawyer8 жыл бұрын
Nope -- no counter milling.
@dcraig48 жыл бұрын
Can you explain what about the core makes this lock non-bypassable?
@bobbykeyz12638 жыл бұрын
That's a great question I would also like to know.
@lockpickinglawyer8 жыл бұрын
The "half moon" on the back of the core is on the top, and not on the side. This makes it impossible to insert a normal bypass tool.
@dcraig48 жыл бұрын
Got it, sort of. Next time you have one apart can you give a quick visual explanation?
@bobbykeyz12638 жыл бұрын
+LockPickingLawyer oh ok thank you.
@rjperkins3658 жыл бұрын
dcraig4 the bypass tool would have to be shaped like an L to work. So when you slide it thru it would have to be oriented to the key. In American locks it comes out of the keyway already lined up with the actuator so all you have to do is rotate. If the bypass tool comes out in the middle of the half moon of the plug it is stuck there because it would bottom out on the core and if you try upside down it will come out of the keyway bottoming out on the actuator. Hope that clears it up a little.
