Just wanted to add; I think it's great that you're working and promoting this set-up. You obviously have the cash to buy a "flagship" set-up many times over, but this will allow a whole generation of aspiring dj's to get started with minimal outlay. Bravo, sir!

I absolutely love and admire how you embrace new technologies for your sets. I can relate to the "hate" you might get from the purists cause I've personally had my share of that first when I switched to CDs, and then when I started using traktor (even with vinyl timecode). It amazes me that some people still fail to understand that the gear is irrelevant at this point and what matters is that we keep the crowd happy, and the clubs packed. Thanks to you I re-discovered Denon and got myself a little Prime Go a couple of years ago. If the promoter can provide a Pioneer or a Denon set up I'll use it. If they can't I bring my traktor set up (two Kontrol D2's). And if its a small club or a smaller town where no "big" set ups are available for rent I just bring my Prime Go. And the crowd doesn't care as long as we keep delivering good music. I love to see you showcasing this newer set up too, it looks like a great option for portability and the app looks powerful too. Much love from Mexico!

I love the fact that you can setup cue points on your songs through your phone, since it’s always so time consuming. It’s so convenient because next time you’re bored and waiting in line somewhere, instead of wasting time with entertainment to pass the time, you can continue to work on your craft since it’s all capable of being done at the touch of your fingertips. Me myself switched from Traktor to DJay Pro AI some months ago. Since it also was my back up system I also have the Mixtour for a couple of years now already, actually shortly after it was released in early 2016 always loved the vision of an ultra portable yet powerful set up. Thing is I think the Mixtour has become a little bit outdated, cause it doesn‘t portray all the new amazing possebilites the app has to offer. Most of all I’m missing ways to control FXs and the presence of performance pads. So I had high hopes that Reloop was able to provide this with the Buddy and/or the Ready. What can I say…as much as I love the layout of those controllers I was shocked what a poor sound quality these controllers have. The Mixtour still sounds powerful and awesome und comparison after all these years. No competition! Ican only hope that with you on their team now, Reloop will take a new shot on releasing an ultra portable controller for all the key features of Djay Pro AI with professional sound quality and outputs.

I would really like to see a 2023 mixtour with usbc to usbc to connect iphone or iPad, 4 more buttons for each deck so you don't have to press shift all the time and pushed rotary mixer buttons so you toggle on/off the stems. If you are not a scratch dj, iPad and a controller with audio interface is the best solution in my opinion.

I love this video and its thoughtful explanation, which totally matches my feelings and I'm sure many others too. Thank you to Laidback Luke for putting this out. I'm sure it'll encourage new DJs to stick with what works for them, without feeling like they gotta conform to the old school Pioneer DJM900 and CDJs. Like a lot of people, I started out DJing with just an MP3 player and Virtual DJ - CDJs and Pioneers were totally unfamiliar to me. Even though over time there was pressure to switch to CDJs, they seemed outdated. So I went with the Reloop Mixtour instead for a more modern setup. Just unplug the RCAs from the mixer and you're good to go. For anyone commenting that the Mixtour only has 2 decks - Virtual DJ has four decks on software.

I have used traktor for many years and decided to buy the traktor z1, x2 and f1 controllers, have a digital setup, then I bought the traktor s8 where it reminded me that it was going to be the future of djing, the reloop mixtour with djay pro makes me remember even that, if I were to go from one software to another I would move with djay pro, now I am more familiar and together with your video it makes me still feel on point, many colleagues tell me that they would not feel comfortable without jogwheels but if they don't try and don't leave their comfort zone they will never know, a lot of respect for you Laidback Luke I have been following you for years and you are an inspiration

I learned how to dj from this app. Before I could buy a “proper” controller this app taught me the fundamentals. And those fundamentals translated into producing. It’s so cool to me to see it being used in a festival setting. The gear is just a tool to accomplish a task. How creative you get with what you have is what will always set you apart. I believe that everything you need is within reach. You just need to look for it and know how to look differently at it.

This is such an excellent example that you don't need a million dollar controller or dj decks to be considered a pro level dj .. At the end of the day its all about playing good music that counts , and if your set up is as portable as this its such a great advantage...Not to long ago djs where only spinning records with no cue points ,no fx . no music selection at this level .. This would be considered a miracle not to long ago... The future looks bright for the new generation of djs and this videos is a great example of what's to come ..Great video Luke 👍

Just bought a second-hand S8.....if NI hadn't lost its marbles big time, I would have bought it new. Great video BTW. I think of adding a Reloop deck, Traktor control vinyl and a set of butter rugs to the party. Of course, Serato butterrrugs to confuse the opposition. And one question, in time of digital DJing what is the benefit of dialing in the BPM with a knob, instead of using the dreaded sync button if you can read the bpm of both tracks? Would go for the Luke setup if I would acknowledge Apple as a brand.

I've played on Reloop Contour(interface edition) until i've messed up with AC adapter and plugged it in 12v one instead of 6v. Then i moved to ZOMO MC1000 (production date is 2011, bought new never opened for 99 euro in 2016) and it fit all of my needs, of course all of mine tracks is perfectly warped and i've set all the needed cue points in Traktor, i do not need a pitch fader and jogs for many years, All i need is 2/4 channel mixer. So, Reloop has been made the solid stuff before. Still waiting for Contour successor :) Couple weeks ago i've played on the CDJs first time in 10+ years, it was kinda scary bc i never touched rekordbox-based Pio players, the only thing i found missing is large laptop screen for better tracks search. So, hardware price doesn't matter anything, everything is rely only on your music taste and creativity.

Luke, thank you for taking the time to share this content with us. I tried this setup a long time ago when Spotify was a cloud music option inside the djay app, it was the greatest solution around, there was no need to carry any music at all! When Spotify was no longer an option I stopped using it. The app has potential but it also has some drawbacks, you won't have any luck playing anything if you have events where cell phone signal or wifi are an issue (venues made of metal or concrete, ranch homes, huge events in a dessert, just to name a few real world examples). The only way I see myself using this setup again is if I can plug in my external 4TB drive filled with music. The app requires an internet connection otherwise it's completely useless!

9 years ago, I bought my first DJ controller: a small Hercules DJ Control Instinct. It had only the bare necessities, which are extremely similar to what you have here plus two tiny platters. This video demonstrates perfectly the big problem with this controller, that ultimately pushed me to something larger: You don't have enough buttons. every control on your deck has 2, 3, maybe even 4 different functions depending on which other modulator button you press or hold. I could never get used to this, it held me back immensely. It prevented me from doing tight tricks that required access to both Hot Cues and Loop Buttons. It meant I couldn't use the gain knob as I had to remap it to a pitchbend. Half of my EQ was remapped to other functions. It was a wonderful device to get started in the art of DJing, and to fire up a hunger for more, but I could never do any more complex things with it. To this day, my Pioneer SB2, a controller with 4 virtual decks and only 2 channels, holds me back significantly because of the hindered access to the faders on the secondary decks, so I simply do not use them. If you can manage to maintain the same complexity and quality of your unscripted livesets, you have my highest respect. Though I find it hard to believe anyone could reduce their control interface to such a tiny fraction without simplifying their mixing style. I see the benefits of having the DJ software on your phone instead of a laptop or the deck itself, but I don't see the broader scene moving to controllers that are THIS simply anytime soon.
@randalray
@randalray Жыл бұрын
Oh, and considering the price: For that money, I'd rather get a Traktor Kontrol S3 or Numark NS4FX. While I don't know how well / if they work with phones, they're not much more expensive while offering two platters, 4 mixing channels and a LOAD more buttons, while not being super large either. Seems a much better investment to me.

The Hardware is not the problem the Mixtour Pro looks like a great little portable controller. its the software that's stopping me from getting the Mixtour Pro. Good that you mentioned Traktor. Even before I owned Serato, and once mp3s became a viable DJ format, I was using Traktor with a similar controller from M-Audio. So that idea is old. It worked but the hands on jog/turntable control was a sacrifice. Like you said, you can't exactly scratch with that and I remember thinking, touch screen control would be a potential solution. The new idea here is the phone and what DJAY app unlocks! It has a capability of doing DVS. The AI stems stuff is a game changer. And the mobile preparation use case is HUGE. I am not a professional DJ, which means I spend my hours sitting at a computer doing a job - away from my DJ gear. Even just being able to listen to the exact same library that I use to DJ would be good, without needing to sync anything. You definitely got me thinking..

Really respect how you try and push forward the industry Luke! I found a good deal on the Mixtour and picked one up as a secondary controller to use with djay on my phone for on the go/impromptu things. I really love my SC Live 4 and don't think it can replace that for me, but I originally dismissed mobile DJing as a toy but you've really shown me how I was wrong. With regards to 'the future of DJing' as I've heard you and others mention, at least in my opinion (although that's probably worth very little) there is a place for both standalone units and controllers for smartphones. For someone starting out, a mobile setup makes complete sense as smartphones do more and more of what we used to use computers for (the market segment is where the FLX4 currently sits), but for someone getting more serious a standalone would make more sense (in the market segments the FLX6/10 currently target). In my opinion, a phone is too much of a "do-everything" device for me to trust using it for gigs (the amount of time it's exposed to breakage is far higher than even a laptop) but I think an iPad is a good compromise here - useful for enough other things that people still have them lying around but without the previously mentioned downsides of a smartphones. As someone DJing in a student town, I can definitely say people having an iPad wouldn't be uncommon based on what I see in my classes. If you're getting seriously into DJing, what I've found owning the SC Live 4 after a few controllers is that you can't beat the convenience and dependability of a standalone when compared to using a laptop - no Windows/macOS updates to break things, no software used for school/day jobs to mess things up and a lot more. And if someone spills a vodka cran in the booth you only break one $2000 toy instead of two of them. A lot of the benefits of the mobile setup are what drew me to a standalone in the first place - glad to see you're promoting things which make it easier for the next generation of talent to get started!

A good case to cover the screen of the phone and its good. Phones always get newer chips every year, where stand alones don't, that's why denon had to bring a new prime 4 plus to play stems. Also phones are the most convenient form factor. Handy to play on an ipad sure. But a mixtour is a good interface for a phone. Best to try it all really!

What holts the progression in moving into new gear. Is (at least in my mind) a concept called social idealisms. Social idealism's according to Dr John Demartini are injected values from the external world. E.g. 'Real DJ's should use vinyl' 'You shouldn't use sync'. You can typically identify social ideals when people: Use imperative language such as; should, have too, need too, ought too. The response to these statements is according to who? And obviously use what you love to use. We perform to entertain the audience, no appease others DJ's gear demands. This is why I love your videos Luke. Your always a step ahead using what you love.

Then, of course, it rings. And this doesn't just affect calls, but also other messages. You can prevent this by activating the "Do not disturb" focus. And you can also set it so that this focus is activated when the app is started. Of course, the phone cannot be used in any other way during this time, but you should be aware of this beforehand. I kinda do something similar. I always have Algoriddim's Djay app on my phone because when I get random ideas, it allow me to pull from Beatport and try them out roughly with the touchscreen and hear how it sounds. Then I like to use Lexicon to convert cues and whatnot between platforms so that I don't have to redo everything on preparation sessions. It also allow me to have a good app that is already setup with my credentials that I can just plug people's setup in if I'm requested to punch in a set on a whim. Otherwise, I still like to use my Denon Prime 4 on more "normal" times. It's a all-in-one device that has all my stuff + Beatport streaming and I don't need to carry my phone or my laptop with it. It kind of saved me for the two gigs I did where I wasn't allowed to have my phone (or cameras rather) there.

Way to innovate and stay true to yourself, Luke. I have one question, and it’s about sound quality. How does the Mixtour DAC stack-up to the CDJ or DJM DACs? Surely there’s an audible difference on a large system.

HI LUKE-GREAT VIDEO AND DISCUSSION! I'M ALL ABOUT BREAKING OUT OF THE BOX AS A DJ AND I AGREE THAT DJ PRO IS PROBABLY THE MOST ADVANCED SOFTWARE FOR DJING RIGHT NOW. I WOULD RECOMMEND USING AN IPAD PRO WITH AN M2 PROCESSOR FOR THIS SET UP. ESPECIALLY SINCE DJPRO AI WAS SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED FOR THE IPAD. HOW WOULD ONE CONNECT 2 IPADS? WOULD YOU ADVISE USING 1DECK MODE FOR ACHIEVING THAT? I WOULDN'T RELY ON STREAMING, NOT EVEN FOR HALF OF MY SET, UNLESS IT WAS AN EMERGENCY. ON A SIDE NOTE TIDAL JUST STOPPED STEMS AND COULD FORCE AN UPDATE ON DJ SOFTWARE OTHER PROVIDERS MAY FOLLOW, YOU NEVER KNOW. THERE'S A REASON WHY APPLE MUSIC AND SPOTIFY PULLED OUT OF DJ SOFTWARE ALL TOGETHER. SO YOUR USING IT AS A CHANNEL ON THE CLUB SET UP RIGHT? WHY WOULD YOU NOT USE THE CLUB GEAR AS A CONTROLLER WITH YOUR PHONE AND SOFTWARE? CAN YOU GIVE SOME MORE INFO ON HOW ONE COULD USE THIS WITH ABELTON LIVE IN A CLUB READY SET UP? ✌️

I have tried small size controllers with mobile DJ apps. After much trial and error I have to say this is simply not going to work (well) on Android based devices, iOS devices are fine tho as you have demonstrated. What I uses now is a Windows based tablet or 2-in-1 laptops which can run RekordBox PC, with a Xone K2 controller. I have spend months working on a mapping for RB with Xone K2 that can control 4-decks (with the endless encoders that can set loops and jump around in the track like with Traktor) and all the FX and the stems features in RB . Did needed a 3rd party app for the complex MIDI re-routing and reprogramming to work around the limited MIDI mapping of RB. It also works great as extra controller just for controlling the FX and stems functions in RB beside a controller, All-in-one or CDJ/DJM HID mode. IMO a downside of playing from the phone is the small display. Therefor the app can only display you with limited amount of information. Another downside in general for controllerism is having to switch between "modes" or using SHIFT to access certain functions. This can prevent you from accessing 2 functions simultaneously. I do wonder or you can add an USB Hub with PD to your setup, to include an audio interface with XLR. I know the controller you are using have RCA output, but it doesn't have input for if you need to use a microphone. Plus it will add balanced audio output to the setup. And could you add more controllers to this setup? If they could somehow combine something like the Reloop Spin with DVS with this. That would be interesting. Gives you back the platter you crave for, even if it's belt-driven system.

This was an amazing commercial, or infomercial, as we say in the States. But props for announcing who your sponsors are. Couldn't you always remap midi controllers? Or is it just that you've never used them before? And, so...the "sync" button/feature...yea or nay? Just wondering where your feelings lie with that issue coming from a vinyl background. Regardless, keep making the music, keep getting out there, keep sharing (thank you for doing so)...and "L's" up. Much love, my friend.

Having modular, configurable gear has long been the way forward. Portability and flexibility with a low cost of entry. I still have a traktor setup X1s, Z1,F1. I paired that with some Denon sc2000 jog controllers. Something that only Denon have produced. Themodern equivalent is an lc6000. I could mix and match the setup. I could go to just an X1 and Z1 or go full setup. Nice to see other DJ software that is almost fully configurable these days, which is what I loved about traktor. For a while I even included an iPad with midi control surface configure my own special effect macros. Only downside at the time was it still needed a laptop.

Hi Luke, I like that you embrace new tech. I wish the dj hardware developers would make something to help the dj focus on something real important: having the dj focus on good music selection. I really wish i could help design a new mixer. For example if Reloop made a lock-in-place or made a "T-shape" mixer, that had a physical keyboard-(with an added scroll knob). Meaning, put a keyboard on the top of the Reloop MixTour mixer, so a dj could type & scroll quickly. Would be less misstypings (like on the iphone) and forget typing on a phone's touchscreen if your hands are sweaty. This would increase music searching & selecting by a whole bunch. Still could have a cable that attaches to your phone like in your setup. Then ..i would leave the big laptop at home. 👍 -MIKE BEATS

Playing at a club every weekend, I've tryed many different setups, including this one. I still think it's just more comfortable to bring a pair of USBs and connect them to the Pioneer setup. Also, the iPhone screen is too small for me, specially for browsing the library. BUT, now that they made the stems so good, I'm thinking about completely switching. There's too much advantsges, added to what Laidback Luke said: - Analyzing tracks on the phone. No more rekordbox and exporting bullshit. - It's super mobile. When you work at, let's say, a weeding, you just need to bring your own gear. - It's very easy to map any controller the way you want (much easier and better than rekordbox). - Even if the iPhone screen is tiny, you can always use an iPad, metadata syncs flawlessly between devices.

I have started using an Akai AMX that I found used for $40 and was amazed how quickly I stopped missing the features of my larger controllers. It doesn't have cue points like the newer Mixtour but my laptop has a touch screen and I am currently programing a cheap midi controller to handle that. One advantage of the AMX that I hope they add to a version of the Mixtour is RCA inputs for running DVS when I do want decks (though now with HID over USB that isn't a must). Anyway, thanks for bringing attention to these small mixers. The phone connectivity has some advantages I wouldn't have thought of. I may have to look into a Mixtour if for nothing else than to have a powerful and intuitive backup system.

I watched this video twice and I have also djay Pro AI on my iPad and MacBook. I dig a bit in my drawers and found an A&H xone:K2. After searching the web I found a mapping for the Xone:K2 which is a good starting point for own mappings and this works also for me. djay Pro AI has the same flexibility for MIDI mapping like Traktor but has stems seperation and is available on more platforms than any other DJ software. The Reloop Mixtour is currently available for 199€ in some stores and it is good starting point for aspiring DJ's and for those who don't want to carry a big set of equipment. More of your mobile setup please. We have to deal with new technologies also in the DJ area. If we would not adopt new things an dinventions we would still live in caves and made fire with wooden sticks...😂

This just reconfirms my thoughts. I have a cheap af numark mixtrack pro for casual use when travelling or picnics. It's not about the hardware per se, it's just the knowledge and functionality. I don't get the love for Algoriddim as a primary s/ware, I massively dislike Serato and Rekordbox. I have deep love for Virtual DJ. BUT each to their own, and the fact that Luke's decided his mobile phone should be the foundation of setup... you do you, bro. Combined with the fact that when playing festivals Luke's sets would be highly rehearsed and pre-prepared, convenience is obviously a major consideration. 👏👏👏Keep spinning.

How is the beat matching without having a jog wheel? I get that you can use the buttons to "nudge" the track forward or backwards, but I feel like the jog wheel would be easier to use. Do you find yourself using beat sync more?
@TEMICXOCH909
@TEMICXOCH909 Жыл бұрын
Yes the tracks get synced to the beat, most of the techno djs do this now too. When you really think about it there is literally no reason to beat match by ear anymore unless you’re using records like the og’s. Todays controllers have so much visual feedback, beatgrid, waveform etc. that you can use that to beatmatch instead of by ear, it’s practically like using the sync button. So why not just use it lol

I've actually looked for a more portable setup myself. But personally I still want to have tempo sliders and decks to control the music. Also having a more buttons for more functions are a need for me. My personal dream setup would be a minisized 2 deck 4 mixer channel controller with all the functions of full sized setup but in a small cramped layout. As far as I know this doesn't exist atm apart from some parts of it in low quality low end controllers. The bad quality of the knobs etc in smalled low end controllers and lack of XLR output are a something that I couldn't have if I wanted to use a setup for anything more than home use or with friends in a casual setting. Currently my personal setup is full sized Denon mixer and decks with Serato but since I don't bring them to every gig I play I end up playing on Pioneer CDJs quite often.

yess love the original intro! The techno djs are SMART they saw what they could do with the technology and did it and didnt care what people thought. It gave them the ability to do amazing things with 4 tracks. I can see a lot of similarities with your mobile setup. Reloop should sell a "laidback luke" model with your custom knobs as a way to generate more collaborative revenue. I do think we spend too much time on our phones and this setup is kinda backwards in that thats the only flaw I see in it. I dont want to do EVERYTHING on my phone.
