Living in Alaska and often hunted with a young guy that bought one of them Michels recondition Mauser 98s in 8 mm Mauser he would buy cheap military 8mm ammo then I would find the bullet weight to replace the FMJ bullets with Barns TSX 185 grain bullets to hunt moose with and great for shooting black bears. It worked great and cheaper than buying commercial ammo. And because the old 8mm Mauser ammo brass was non reloadable we didn't care about losing spend brass in the brush. As long as staying with the same bullet weight the cartridges came loaded with not a problem.

🇦🇺😎👍Hey big fella. Happy Saturday… I like the ole 323 / 8 mm Mauser. Nice rifle.. You get a lot of hang fire with some of that old ammo… I don’t think we have much down here anymore…8 mm production ammo is very expensive down here nowdays…great video, have a great weekend 🏁
@3142993 ай бұрын
I dont think there is much of this stuff left here anymore. It used to be common and cheap but supplies of surplus 8mm pretty dried up years ago.

As you said, ammunition gets old and breaks down, primers are the first to go. however, if you got it for a good deal the projectiles are recoverable. and at the prices of bullets these days it could be an incentive. new bullets have got to crazy prices at almost 70-80 cents a round, and (For the most part) just to shoot holes in paper? Btw, aging eyes, there was a part in the video where all we looked at was the pattern of the countertop. that reminded me of an old eye test where you would try to see a number somewhere in it.. hehehe.. Good video, I like the Husky, good solid rifle. peace - Dave

Yeah. I have bought ammo known to be poor just to get the bullets. Of course I have also bought ammo that I expected to be good just to find out it was crap. One needs to get deals where ever they may be found. I have two Husqvarna 98 action rifles, this 8mm and one in 30/06, they are great rifles bought for modest amounts of money, I really should see if I can find one in .270 Win to round out the set.

@@314299 It's a shame that the .303 is falling into the pit of obsolescence, what factory ammunition that is available is made to the smallest diameter (Other than PPU). also, finding just the bullets has been narrowed down to a few producers. seem that few want to make it anymore, if you do find bullet, they are outrageous prices. seem that the industry is pushing the .303 off the edge of the cliff, even though there are millions of MK-1's and it's variances, MK-4's and it's variances, MK-5's still out there being used. I'm resorting to the use of my cast bullets for paper punching. - Dave

@@thorsaxe5881 Speaking of 303 ammo just last week a full box of IVI Canadian production 303 ball sold at a local auction for what was a silly high price.

@@314299Yup, I don't know what gets into people, It's like they pay whatever the price so that they are the only ones that have it. Or, they are off their rocker and think that tomorrow they will wake up to the planet of the apes or something. It's one thing to get a good deal, However, there are people sitting in their basement clutching their AK-47 while they sit on top of a pallet of canned tuna fish.🤔

It's not a bad idea to test some of your older ammo (if you have a quantity) to see how it's holding up.

I didn't hear you mention the possibility of corrosive primers. Coming from that era of com-block countries I would make double sure I clean my gun after using that ammo.

Oh, this stuff is super corrosive, as is any Czech ammo of the period.

@3142993 ай бұрын
They are OK, but perhaps a bit marginal for reloading. They seem strong enough, I have reloaded some because I have a bunch of the Russian primers that I need to use up, but if I had to purchase expensive RWS Berdan primers for them I would not bother.

the velocity figures are pretty consistent for old surplus fodder, but I wonder about your firing pin protrusion and its spring strength if misfires are going off the "second time around"...
@3142993 ай бұрын
I have shot quite a variety of other ammo in the rifle with no problems, so I dont think the firing pin or spring are the cause of the issue. This ammo acts the same way some late 1940's Czech 9mm did, that stuff would have the occasional round that would not go off on the first strike, but a second strike would get it to go off. When that ammo got a few years older it simply would not go off at all.
