I laughed reading this but it's too true. These youtubers, instead of thinking about whether they could do a video, they didn't stop to think if they should. And many shouldn't have because they have bloated this site to the gills with worthless videos. 😀

Thanks so much for the video, it's been several years since I've used my lee load all, I've got 2 of them, 12ga. and 20ga. I really didn't forget, but needed a refresher course you might say. I've got a bunch of primed virgin hulls that I thought in this day and age why not load some shotgun rounds. You can never have too much ammo. Thanks!

Let me add my thank you as well. I bought this machine because I will be loading buckshot. The powder, wads, pellets and buffer will be staged manually, but the other stations on this loader should work for me. Your advice on using powder bushings, etc. was spot on. I hope the newb reloader will spend some time with what is written in the front of the Lyman manual. Even as an experienced, albeit occasional loader, I find that refreshing my memory on the basics is time well spent.

Thank you for this video! I have recently decided to get my dad's 1959 Browning Belgium-made "Sweet Sixteen" up and shooting again, and maybe try to do a little skeet shooting with it. I didn't know that factory 16ga target loads are basically non-existent anymore. I have a few boxes of shells from my childhood that are close to 40 years old, so I'm not putting too much faith in those. It appears to me that if I want low-pressure target loads for this shotgun, I'm going to have to learn to make them myself. If anyone reading these comments wants to share their experience with me I'd be greatful.
@314299
@314299 2 жыл бұрын
I bet those 40 year old boxes of shells will work just fine, assuming they were stored in reasonable conditions. As for loading shells for your Auto 5 16 gauge you may want to look into using either the Claybuster CB0078-16 16ga 7/8-oz wad or the CB0100-16 (Winchester WAA16 copy) for 1 to 1-1/8 oz loads. Have fun with your loading and shooting and thanks for the comment.

Hello Sir I've never reloaded shot shells before. I had buddy's in high school who where duck hunters they reloaded 12guage with there Pops. We bought the shells as we didn't bird hunt much. I have reloaded since high school for pistols and rifle. I love making the most accurate loads I can. Reloading is relaxing for me and used to reduce the cost of shooting a little. Nowwa days everything is expensive. Thank you so much for showing us the process of shot shell reloading. I really enjoy your videos. man I wish I had time to shoot, I miss it very much. I can't wait to retire and enjoy hunting fishing and shooting again.

I recently bought a Lee Load-All II. While loading I stopped and rechecked the weight of the powder charge. It was still where I wanted it to be, so I filled an empty hull with the just weighed charge. While I was running through the reloader, I was about drop the powder and then thought to myself, "Didn't I just fill this one?" Yep, it already had the powder in it. Glad I checked.

Shot shell powder/wad/shot charges are bulky and so it's unlikely you would have been able to crimp a shell with two powder charges in it.

I like those early Load-All's better, they have a more sturdy feel than the later plastic base versions.
@timothytietz9194
@timothytietz9194 4 жыл бұрын
Agreed!. Note on the conversion kits, the plastic base loaders have a screw in shell plate guide (the black thing) on the final crimp. Older metal base is by guage, meaning converting a 12 to a 16 or 20 is ok, but up converting (originally 20, convert to 12) wont work due to the guage specific base. I'm working on a desert island-zombie outbreak way to load 3.5 inch hulls, rube goldberg, but it works. Deprime separate with rod and washer base, size with stacked sizers- 2 of them, reprime, remove wad guide, drop powder, homemade wad guide stand and wad plunger as a separate seating unit, count shot or weigh, count is by old primer tray-one pellet per hole-win 209 primer tray and then crimp as usual. Watch tough sizing, dont overstress machine, and maybe best to weigh powder charge and kind of look at load all as a fancy hand tool for priming and crimping only, better than lee hand tool. Junior load all can make passable shells too. Shave a few thousandths off the bottom of the final crimp die to get slightly deeper crimp, never more than factory loads tho. You can find these at gunshows dirt cheap at times 5-10 bucks, at worst they crimp better than the hand tool and repriming is safer than a mallet. From there forward, they do a good to great job on a budget. Mec 600's are cheaper too, 25 to 50 bucks used with rust included free with the deal, but in a lee, the 16 makes good sense to load economically and versatility wise. 28 and 410, used mec 600's are nice, I made a tooling head for a lyman vandalia for 410 with a mec #446 crimping sleeve for an old mec 400 and it works well, but it's more stumbling on to stray parts and a cobblers mindset.

James Pollard How did you load slugs with it? Do you use the same amount of powder and the same wads but just put a slug in instead? and don’t slugs need rolled crimps, not folded crimps?
@GeoffAlbertson
@GeoffAlbertson 4 жыл бұрын
My Lee slugs are fine with crimps on the loadall, but nothing stops me from using alternative crimps or overshot cards to hold the slug. Slugs are where the money is saved. If crimping, watch your column height for best results. I shim with fiber wads to control height.

Great explanatory video on the machine. I find that the crimp starter step benefits from a bit of a a jiggle to perfectly align the crimp facets. I also put a uniforming trim on cases that have been loaded a few times as they seem to stretch unevenly around the shell mouth causing lop sided crimps.
@314299
@314299 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, a bit of a twist on the shell can help the crimp align itself in the machine. How many loadings are you doing before you see any of that lopsided stuff?

I think the Lee Load-All is a great value if one wants to get into reloading shot shells on a budget. I have a MEC Sizemaster but it hasn't seem much use in about 10 years as lead shot prices are more expensive than just buying cheap shell for the occasional clay target shoots.

Good informative video, no BS. I've been reloading pistol and rifle cartridges for decades and now that I'm doing more shotgun shooting, I'm about to start to reload shotgun shells. The only thing I didn't like was when he said you can omit the resizing step if you are using the shells in your own gun. Some people own multiple guns and may take that to mean it's ok to use them in all their guns or may go ahead and use or sell the un-resized shells for use in someone else's gun thinking it isn't an important step. Even though his statement was correct it's better not to include information someone may misinterpret.
@314299
@314299 2 жыл бұрын
Since sizing the shells is the same amount of steps in loading as omitting it one might as well size everything. I have never personally omitted using the sizing ring in all the years I've used these machines, but figured I might as well mention it as it is an option for those who are using shells fired and reloaded for the same gun. Supposedly there are people out there who only own one gun of a given gauge, but I think they are rare.

@@314299 You are correct in what you said, and I didn't mean to sound like I was correcting you. The only reason I mentioned it is because in my experience I've had people who when told you can do this in this circumstance sometimes, they forget the circumstance then blame the person who told them when it's their fault they didn't listen, didn't understand, or didn't think the circumstance was important. I may be a little overly cautious, but I thought it was worth mentioning. Overall, it is a very good video. I still haven't decided which press I will purchase yet but your straightforward style made your video easy to follow compared to others I've watched where I had to skip through all the unnecessary commentary they add.

Superb presentation on this loader. Packed with 3x the information of other, lesser videos and in less time than they took. You keep talking clearly and crisply, no William Shatner-esque...pauses, no um's or uh's (that I noticed) no dead air and you use the proper terminology and no slang; you call things what they are or what they do, and not just "this "thing or that thing". Plus, the subject of the video is in the foreground and not way in the back on a cluttered workbench. No one else has mentioned the accessory primer dispenser either 👍

When emptying the powder or shot chambers cut a 1" piece of styrofoam a little larger then the top of the chamber so it fits tight, I the take a 2" screw and put it thru the center of the foam, that way you have something to grab when removing the foam. That way you can dump one chamber and not spill the other.

If you are going to load a lot of shells I would agree with that, but if you are only loading a few here and there the Lee is just fine and a whole lot cheaper.

This video was informative indeed. I would have liked to see some reloading after the explanation part of the video was finished. I think this reloader looks a bit flimsy. I’m trying to decide if I want to buy this or the MEC 600 Junior or the Sizemaster. I’m just not certain. Sometimes saving money in the short run ends up costing more in the long run. Cheers!

If you want to see some more loading at a normal pace you might want to check out this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j4WwhHmQoretpK8. While the Lee unit does look flimsy that are in fact quite durable. I have a friend who shot about 100 shells a week at the skeet club for several years, all were loaded on a Lee press. I've no doubt his machine loaded over twenty thousand shells with no problems. Having said that the Lee is durable I would still pick a MEC as they have many more adjustments for getting the crimps just right. You would not go wrong with either a 600 JR or Sizemaster, I have several and they are great machines. For the person on a budget or who only plans on limited use the Lee unit is just fine.

For most people it only makes sense to load slugs or buckshot as purchasing bird shot for reloading costs as much as, or more, than just buying shells.
@jungleno.
@jungleno. 4 жыл бұрын
With the current price of shot, primers and powder it's actually cheaper to buy than to reload for trap and skeet. The only real savings comes if you're reloading slugs or Buckshot that you've cast yourself.

Locally where I live I can buy reasonably priced lead shot, so it's still economically viable to reload shot, but with most commercial made shot you are correct it's cheaper to buy 12 gauge shells except slugs and buckshot.

Great video. I want to start reloading some good quality shells in 16 gauge, both lead and bismuth because they are so darn hard to find and bismuth factory loads are so expensive. I'm a fairly low volume shotshell user for hunting. Those in the know all suggest a MEC press, usually the sizemaster but they are very expensive here. The Lee load all II is a very attractive price for a few hundred rounds a year but only if it will reliably load quality shells with the Federal and Kent hulls that I have. Unfortunately, there haven't been any AA hulls in 16 for many years and those that have them, aren't parting with any! Do you consider the Lee good enough? The loads will be used in a couple Winchester Model 12s and an A.H. Fox sxs.
@314299
@314299 4 жыл бұрын
Yes the Lee Load all will load good quality shells. However as it does hot have the same adjustments for crimping as the MEC having a load "fit" the hull correctly is more important to the finished product.

Yes these will work on new, un-crimped shells, but the shell will need to be eased into the crimp starter station carefully and held there for a few seconds to insure that the crimp forms properly.

Fortunately Lee sells replacement sizing rings and shot/powder bushing sets so you should be able to get your loader back in operation. As for the primer feeder accessory Lee does not currently manufacture that, but you can get replacement parts for the single primer feed mechanism. I did a video on loading 3" shells with this machine, you can find it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5vaeamhgrOrZ6s

Public service announcement: Please be careful when reloading hulls that have a separate plastic, cardboard or Fiber base wads. After a couple of reloads, they tend to come loose and could become a bore obstruction in your Shotgun. Ask me how I know!
@314299
@314299 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, that can happen but it is not terribly common in my experience. I've loaded and fired many tens of thousands of hulls that have separate base wads and have only had base wads get loose a few times but they never left the shell. Of course it's a good idea to keep your eye out for that situation and discard any problem hulls. Did you have a specific brand/type of hull that gave you a problem?

How does the crimp work on a new hull?
@314299
@314299 3 жыл бұрын
Crimping new hulls follows pretty much the same practice as crimping a used hull, you pick either six or eight point crimp starting station and then apply gradual pressure on the hull to start creasing the plastic, holding the handle down for a couple seconds to help the plastic take shape, the move to the final crimp station to finish

There is a bushing chart included with the machine, it lists a bunch of different powders and what each bushing will dispense with these powders. When you have a good source of loading data you can look up your specific powder/shot charge/wad/primer/hull to see how much powder is recommended, then look at the chart to see what powder bushing you need to install to get that charge.

I have had had mind 2 months now and it is extremely inaccurate as far as dropping the right amt of powder. Every load is different and not by a little. I have to weigh every load and adjust. Good luck to anyone who gets one ,hope it Dosen t damage your gun!
@314299
@314299 Жыл бұрын
Are you measuring the dropped charges in the course of operating the machine in a complete cycle or are you just dropping charges without all the other operations in between? The machine needs to have a complete loading cycle in order to get consistent drops as the vibration and impact of the cycles (size, reprime crimp) help the powder to evenly fill the powder bushings. I've never had issues with mine being inaccurate. What sort of variation are you experiencing? And what powder are you using with what bushing? Some powders don't measure as well as others - for instance coarse flake powder like 800x is noted for inconsistent charges in most mechanical measures, whereas most ball/spherical powders measure exceptionally well. When it comes to shot charges it is easier to get consistent results from small shot sizes compared to large ones.

My nephew is asking me to show him how to load with my old Lee Load all from my youth (80s), but the powders that I use to use are no longer available so I have to start from scratch. I might have to get load data from the company. Can you use steel shot with these loaders?
@314299
@314299 Жыл бұрын
There is lots of free load data available on line. Probably the best is www.hodgdonreloading.com/ As for loading steel shot with these machines it can be done but the shot bushings are calibrated for lead and so you would have to do some experimenting with the steel shot you use to see what bushing gives you close to the shot charge you need. This means you will need a scale.

If one wanted to use this press with paper hulls and brass hulls, using cork or pads instead of plastic wads, is the operation relatively the same?
@314299

Operation is more or less. If you use brass hulls you will need oversize wads (11 gauge instead of 12 gauge). And obviously you cannot apply any crimp on brass hulls with this machine.

You suggest weighing each load for accuracy but then use the Lee Loader anyway? Am I missing something here?
@314299
@314299 3 жыл бұрын
I suggest weighing each charge of shot and powder when you first start with a particular load combination to verify that you are getting a safe amount consistent with what your load data calls for. As mentioned in the video the amount of powder and shot dispensed by the machine will vary due to operator technique and variation in the manufacture of different lots of powder and shot. Once you are satisfied that the dispensed amounts of powder and shot are correct there is no need to weigh each and every one, that would be very slow and a waste of time. If you watch the demonstration of loading at the end of the video you will note I'm not weighing every charge.

I am using Winchester Grey color AA hulls & they are wanting to crush the body when I do the final crimp. How much crimp do you need or does the degree of crimp not matter?
@314299
@314299 3 жыл бұрын
I suspect your grey AA hulls are the newer HS type that have a separate base wad, they are fairly easy to crush compared to the old one piece compression formed AA hull. What really causes those to buckle when crimped is the height of the powder/wad/shot column inside the shell. The crimp pressure should mainly be pushing down thru that column of components and not thru the hull sides. You might want to try a different combination of components to find one that "fits" better. As for how much crimp to use that depends on what sort of gun you are using, pumps and semis generally work better with "more" crimp while with single shots, double barrels and such it really does not matter much.

I just started reloading with the II model and wondering what is the difference in the 6 and point crimp? I noticed the back one on my 20 ga setup seems to do better job. Thanks
@314299
@314299 2 жыл бұрын
Six point crimps are generally found on inexpensive promotional type loads and also on field type loads while the eight point crimps are usually found on target type loads. Many of the six point crimp type shells used to have heat sealed crimps and so were not the best for reloading. As I see it there is no advantage or disadvantage to one or the other, as long as you end up with a good solid crimp it matters not if it is six or eight point.
