As a beginner taught only by random people in studio I found this invaluable to correct a few things I had learned...incorrectly? I know there is no wrong way but even to be shown here to keep the walls not wet, but instead slippery, was something nobody explained in this way. Quite useful

I appreciate your generosity in sharing your skills with us. I'm trying to understand what causes the clay cylinder to twist as I raise it--other than pulling up too much clay too fast. Thank you!

I'd say clay cylinders tend to twist due to uneven walls - with the walls buckling where the clay wall is thinner. Also you may be pulling too hard and stretching out the clay at the one point. Better to have smooth and even motions and to do smaller but steady pull rather than fewer, but heroic pulls. I hope this was helpful!

Yes the clay has to remain wet at all times, if you hand is not moving smoothly on the clay add more water

Are you left handed? My left hand wants to be the stabilizer and my right hand wants to do the work. However, you seem to be the opposite of that.

For a right handed potter the typical form is to have the left hand inside the pot and the right hand on the outside of the pot while raising. I'm an amateur so I dont know all of the reasons for this. I was similarly drawn to use my right hand inside the pot while raising and had to actively practice using my left hand on the interior of the pot. I've noticed several benefits and significant improvements with this hand positioning. With the wheel spinning counterclockwise if you put your right hand inside the pot it is easier to accidentally catch your fingertip or fingernail and gouge the wall of the pot. With the left hand inside the spin of the wheel more naturally pulls the clay against the pads of your fingers and makes gouges less likely. Additionally, having your dominant hand on the outside of the pot helps you shape the final exterior curve of the pot.

Infuriating video recording, with most of Master Lin's hand work is done behind the pot. Would be great if the vid camera could be position at the side so we can see his hand work, with tools, and pulling up with his thumb.
