My wife and I used to take a couple of big motorcycle trips every summer. We live in Iowa. Went to Asheville for a big Honda rally one time. She rode her first 1500 Goldwing there in the mountains. After we got back, she bought her first 'wing, a 1997 Aspencade. Epic trip !

What a trooper she was. I was stationed in Oklahoma and had orders to a school in Charleston SC. A friend I worked with also had to go to same school. He was from Wa State and had never been east of Mississippi River. I asked he wanted to ride the scoot, he said sure. I had a Suzuki GS 1100 trimmed out with fairing etc. His eyes were as big a saucers at some of the sites. It is great to take someone on that experience. Loved the comment "save some panic for later" Some rain gear might have allowed her to be a little warmer and cut wind. For me everything looks better on the bike. Happy trails.

I had nothing but trouble with my cameras, so I got nothing from my Akaso (GoPro knockoff) and only 5 minutes of the Tail of the Dragon. Still, I said a lot of the same things you did along the way. I really needed that road trip and it was definitely the adventure I needed. I'll say it my way, which is close to yours: that trip was irresponsible and dangerous and ill-advised but there was one big reason to do it and that was reason enough, because IT WAS WORTH IT. Absolutely Amazing Brother! Memories you'll have forever. We truly do live in a beautiful country if you take the time to look. And to make it even better, on a 30+ year old GoldWing, basically trouble free. That's why I love my 85 Interstate. So happy you took us along on this epic journey!

Very nice video trip.I live in the mountains of VA, on the border of WVA, and I have taken my '81 Goldwing Interstate on all the roads here, from I-81 & I-77, & on all the backroads to visit friends and the Blue Ridge Parkway. It is a great handling machine anywhere I ride it. I have done complete rebuilds of the suspension, carbs, cables, brakes, and other wear & tear items to keep the original handling and performance. Just sold it last week to make more room for the next project bike, and I will definitely miss it until I get a replacement.

How much better is riding a bike when the road isn't flat and straight?!

It's much better.

Hey shade tree, maintenance items on the 1200 that shut you down are the stator, stator to regulator harness, regulator, no oil in the rear differential, fork seal failure. Lack of maintenance and age are it’s biggest killers. Mostly electrical as you found out. Keep the fluids full!

Shadetree missed his calling as a heel in Professional Wrestling...the use of hands, the gravely voice, facial expressions, it’s shades of The Macho Man!! Keep kicking ass Shadetree

I’ve always lived by this philosophy. Always expect to fail. Because if you do you will never be disappointed. But if you expect to fail and you succeed you will always be proud of the work you’ve put into whatever you’re trying to achieve.
