All 6 of myGLs will peel your eyes. They accelerate like rockets. You just have to know how to "fix" them. The 4 Cylinder GL engines are somewhat easy to "Hot Rod. A pair of Weber downdraft 2 barrels torqued directly to the heads is a good place to start.

Regarding the 1-10-100, you use that to set the mileage count down on the (+) odometer setting, so you could set like 136 miles and it would count down to 0. Its so you can count down miles until your next turn on one odometer setting, and see total mileage on the other. Useful back in the day of maps, and manual navigation.

Hi, thanks for the video. There is a very big Honda get together in Marysville Ohio, the Honda Hoot, probably not this year due to CO-19. The Gold Wing assembly plant is there. During Hoot time they give tours. I have the t-shirt so I remember I was there. Gold Wing a great motorcycle. Enjoy Niagara, best view is from Canada, leave all fire arms at home ..... Awesome video! I just bought my first Wing yesterday, it’s an ‘88 in great shape for $1300! My grandfather had one when I was a kid and my earliest memory is of sitting on the back of his bike smelling his leather jacket with the wind in my face. I was hooked from that point on.

I had an 85 Goldwing interstate. It did not have the linked brake system that you described. As I am one of those guys that relies on the front brake a lot I was ok with that. That being said, I did lock the front brake doing about 25 mph. The bike came out from under so quick I didn't have a chance to react at all. (At least I didn't hit the Bozo that backed out in front of me) I was really impressed with the crash bars that came from the factory. The only damage to the bike was the scrape on the crash bar itself.

The wing is actually amazing to drop. So long as it just falls over and doesn't tumble, it's got built in crash bars that hold the bike up quite well. Try it out, I promise you won't hurt anything.

There’s no such thing as a beginner bike over a 125cc. Most people crash in turns, going to fast, braking to hard. I started out with a Honda XL 100 cc street and trail, got a license at 15 years old back in 1975..... I had small crashes on wet roads and off road, but nothing bad. As time went on I got bigger bikes, and there all different....! 60 mph in a highway turn is fun, but if you brake hard while the bikes leaning, you slip and crash, you must straighten up to brake hard or your crash can get very bad. You should always ride your big bike in bad weather and plan it, so when your stuck in it, you know what not to do... be very careful of braking, especially in a turn of any kind.. I got a 2004 HD sportster 1200cc to play around on. And a 2008 Suzuki Boulevard C90T 1500cc To tour with.. very smooth very comfortable the HD is not really comfortable cuz I’m a little big on it. I’m 59 now...! It still exciting just getting ready to drive. I got good Bluetooth music set up in my helmets to drown out the constant wind noise.. Try 6 hours without good music on a bike.. it gets boring. I drive south Texas winters covered in leather, summer in jeans boots and white t shirt and white half helmet.. Still you gotta remember to drink water a lot or you cramp up, and get dizzy...! Wind dries you up, so take care of yourself or you end up in a bad place. The adrenaline is what keeps me out there... I love riding.... I drive the coast from la Porte Texas to free port Tx mostly.. Lots of beautiful views at sun up and down.. have fun..!

One of my neighbors told me the story of his Honda Goldwing and his adventures in motorcycling when he was younger. He said his buddy rode around a nice GW back in the 90s and he just loved it and wanted one so bad. So what he did was get himself a little dirt bike and learned to ride that first. After a little time in the saddle on his 250cc dirt bike making 30hp (I actually have no idea how much hp it made) but he decided that it had been long enough and he was done waiting, he went and bought his brand new, off the showroom floor, Honda Goldwing motorcycle!! He trailered it home and the plan was to wait on his buddy to show him around the bike and just get him going on it and he was by no means supposed to even start it on his own. Well, that’s not what happened. He got anxious and excitement overcame wisdom and off he went on his big, bad, new Honda GW after only a couple months on a little dirt bike. He was doing fine til he decided to leave the neighborhood. He pulled up to the stop sign and there was a little bump in that intersection, the kind you had to give it a little more gas to overcome and then you were out on the main road riding into awesomeness. Well he gave it a “little “ gas to get over the hump in the intersection and the bike responded, boy did it respond!! He said the front tire went straight up into the air and him and the bike went flying out onto the main road and head on into a van!!! Yeah, head on!! Doing a wheelie!! He spent several months in a coma and barely survived his experience on his first (and only) Goldwing. So even with a month’s worth of dirt bike riding under your belt, you’re probably still not ready for that kind of power! Everyone is different but don’t be like my neighbor who was damn lucky to survive his only encounter with a Honda Goldwing.

I worked on these Aspencades a lot when I started out as a powersports technician back in the mid 2000's. The stators do go out on them and it's a hefty repair bill. I think if I was going to purchase one with the intention of setting off across states.. I'd maybe consider at least checking that it has a newer stator installed. Just my 2 cents Shadetree. Love the vids, you inspired me to buy a Harley recently.

At this time, if somebody has a 1000-1200, I would suggest doing the conversion and adding a car alternator. There are many sites online to help do this, and you just replace the stator with an alternator from a car. I had already moved to the 1500 when this came out, but I know several that had it done and swear by it.

I am laughing at the idea of anybody buying a 1000+ CC bike as a "beginner". I bought my first Wing in 1985, and already had 5 years of extensive riding behind me. The bike was never intended for beginners, it was always a top of the line cruising model. However, for a beginner back then they had a 500-650 CC smaller version called the "Silverwing".

8 years on my 84 1200, got it as a salvage title it had been layed down and sat for years. Rebuilt brakes, rear air shocks, front forks, and carbs. Plus standard maintenance items. Put about $900 getting back on the road. Couldnt touch a GL1200 for under $3000 8 years ago. Only problem in 8 years has been the starter solenoid, cheap and easy to fix. Oil changes at 5k and timing belts every 50k or 5 years. One of these days I'll paint it. Oh and sold a 2000 BMW K1200LT I got in trade nothing wrong once I replaced a sensor and put all the Tupperware back on. The GL1200 is much easier and cheaper to work on. Similar sensor on the Goldwing $15 sensor takes about an hour. Most auto parts stores carry it as same temp sensor on a mid 80s civic BMW $125 sensor 5 hours and had to wait a month to get the part.

I have had my first gen GL1000 since 2006 and it is seriously one of the best, smoothest bikes I have ridden. I did my timing belts last summer and it was only about 50 bucks a piece. I just finished stripping it completely and making it a cafe racer this past winter. Best of luck to you and enjoy this absurdly over-engineered beauty! It'll be a blast if you treat it right.

I agree you can get a good bike for 2K. I sold my last bike about 3 years ago to help finance a small biz and this summer after discovering your KZbin channel got re-inspired to get a small around town bike. Found an 05 Speedmaster sitting in a guys garage with a plethora of newer Triumphs and got him to take 2300 it. Runs like a champ! My brother had the same bike amongst many Triumphs over the years but this is my first and I LOVE her! Thanks for all the content man, really helps keep me sane during lockdown!

The q1200 motor does have a few parts you can't get anymore though. So be aware theirs a sensor up under the front covers with the timing belts that if it goes bad there goes your 2k bike too cause there are NO replacements and Honda no longer makes that part either.

I was told many years ago, that front brake design was to assist with hill starts. Just to hold the bike stationary, so the rider wouldn't have to lift one leg off the ground to support the bike while on a hill. I don't know if that's true, but that's what I was told. To me that makes sense, but who knows...

I have an 85 Aspencade with 96000 miles on it and have put 15000 miles on it myself. Two things, one rotate your handle bar forward and you won't have that issue with your legs. Second, once you are used to it you will find that opposed 4 cylinder is perfectly balanced for high speed cornering and twisty turnies. Rev it up to about 4k and you will begin to feel the sport part.

I always grew up around club folks so most of them were the Harley only boys, always saying stuff like "Wouldn't be caught dead on a Goldwing." I grew up and recognized for myself that that's all horseshit. Two wheels is two wheels. If and when you end up going down, that pavement isnt going to give a single shit what manufacturer you went down on. Would be much better for the community as a whole if we nixed that kind of thinking. We're all united by a love of the same thing, riding free.

I have had my 1981 GL1100 Goldwing Interstate for a little over a month now and I love it. This was my dream bike and now I have one. I changed classes of bikes by trading my 2004 Yamaha XT225 Dualsport. I bought the Yamaha for $500 and put about $100 into it, so for $600, I got my dream bike. It came with no maintenance records and the guy said he had a hell of a time syncing the carbs so I knew he didn't use a vacuum guage. I synced the carbs correctly and started a maintenance log after I changed out the rear drive shaft gear oil. I am waiting for the new timing belt to come in and I still have to flush the cooling system, but this bike is amazing and almost mint looking. I am getting really good at slow speed turns and it loves the highway. My first long ride on it was almost 350 miles and spent the day seeing the sights. I plan on getting another oldwing but a few years newer and it will probably be an aspencade. Thanks for the video!

Suggestion......If you're going that deep into the front-end to change the belts, go one step further and change the coolant pump impellor. The stock impellor is plastic, (my '81 Interstate) the replacement is available in metal. Plastic ones tend to eventually disintegrate, metal ones are forever.

Move the handlebars forward some.. the bike maneuvers just as good as my 2004 HD FXD or any lightweight bike. of course you need to not be afraid of the size and weight and practice slow maneuvers and the bike will ride great!.
