I always use a slight radius w/a fretbender as well when fretting the flat fingerboards. They indeed sit very flush that way. What I ALSO do when it comes to a bound neck is AFTER nipping the tang I go in individually and file off the "leftover" material that the tang nipper leaves behind. I end up with a perfectly flat bead base and it sit extremely flush to the top of the binding once they're finished and beveled. I just refretted 3 that were bound. It takes a LITTLE longer to do it but I think they sit more flush when filing off that leftover tang scrap. A recent one was a '97 Korean Washburn M3SW (which I love. Beautiful paintjobs on those older Korean Washburns) and the fretboard was considerably softer than most--didn't get any chip away though, fortunately. Even with a reasonable size tang on a slightly larger fret I still had to use a gluing and setting method for several of the frets to get them as solid and stable as they should be. It's still a bit surprising to me that one that particular instrument the fretboard was not gripping the tang very well in so many places. Final result was perfect, but one has to get creative at times for perfection, it doesn't come easy. Good work on this! Looks good in the video anyway. I think I'm going to make a copy of that jig you're using. Looks better than mine. ~JSV

Read somewhere: To prevent the accidental opening of the water chamber or a disconnection from the tip while using the pen, it is fitted with a left-hand thread. Sort of "Are you sure you want to open it" ;)

one guy got really upset because I leveled brand new frets after installing them lol all kinds on youtube! that mandolin sounds pretty good!

People don’t understand that the fret board isn’t dead assed level and the term “pretty flat” isn’t a precision term. Leveling the frets is the only way to get it right. Never argue with the wild man.

Perfect! Just the video I needed. I've recently been gifted a '70s Japanese mandolin, but the neck has too much bend in it.

I love you're dedication and commitment to "doin' it right". I can only imagine, until you got used to the disappointment, not being able to bring the quality of the instruments you give TLC to because of customer constraints. It's always better being a proactive "front-end" kind of person, than a "back-end" reactive one because it always cost twice as much as it would have just doin' it right the 1st time and being done with it. I guess we are a slightly OCD lot, but I think where quality and perfection is concerned, anyone in their right mind would WANT that kind of focus and attention to detail working on anything of theirs and worth every penny of the cost. Great job on bring her back to life, right! ;)

A word of caution on the marking gauge. I recall a carpenter (Roy Underhill from PBS, I believe) commenting that he was given a ruler from one of the Scandanavian countries and it got him in trouble when he used it because he found the Scandinavian inch was slightly bigger or smaller than our inch. You might compare it to another inch standard to be sure.

You said correctly from the start. The bending part is describing an arc and you measure how much bending an arc have by saying the length of the corresponding radius. Mostly people confuse those and only say radius all the time, but the radius is an straight line.

That is awater brush used to paint water colors. Search for water color supplies and you will find them. If you use dies in them they may clog and become one color only. If you use water color pigments make sure they are colorfast.

Great job Jerry as usual. Just subscribed your channel for about a month now and it is the most youtube channel that I watched everyday. Enjoy your video with some tricks & tips on how to do things and I like your playing the instruments after you finished repair it. I wish I can still watch you sing at the end of the video as before. Anyway I am watching this channel from Malaysia. Keep it strong Jerry.

1/128th is standard for a fractional inch vernier, so the markings along the ruler are 1/4, 1/8th 1/16th etc, imperial, especially fractional is a bit long winded and best avoided where ever possible haha..

Nice work as always jerry. I refretted my late ‘49-early ‘50 f12 conversation a couple months ago. It hadn’t been off of the wall since i built the music room when we finished moving in to the stone house up on the mountain. It was my first “real” my grand dad bought it for me when the neck angle on my old framus got to the point it was unplayable mandolin,but man that thing was horrid sounding before I sent it off to have to the top re-graduated and re-braced like a 20s loyd loar. Mine is a natural finish,not sure if it was refinished sometime in its life or if it’s a factory natural finish. The frets were pretty grooved up,I filed them down some and re-crowned and polished them a couple times but it needed it. Hopefully I can get my hands operated on some day and can go back to playing mandolin again regularly. As always,love the videos mr.jerry. Sitting in the recliner with my little one watching it.

I have a 1999 F5 G and the neck is a little off at this point. Had the truss rod adjusted but the problem came back. Doesn't the finger board and tightness of the frets and integrity of the bond to the neck contribute greatly to the neck stiffness?
@klauscottonswab2322 Жыл бұрын
If you cut the notch in the fret you'll have to file away the excess left over that's sitting on the binding..or they sit on the binding.. 🤣

Is there a radius normally on a mandolin or are they all flat? 😉

@RosaStringWorks5 жыл бұрын
I know what it is my question is why would you graduate something in that scale
@willmorrison10225 жыл бұрын
@@RosaStringWorks I have no idea, myself, but it was apparently more common back in the 19th century. If you look in Edward Heron-Allen's book on violin building, he has some measurements in 48ths and 24ths of an inch. And as he was English, that would be in English inches, just to further complicate things. I didn't get into metric measurements until I started getting into violin making, and there you largely have to do it since it's all in metric measurements. I also have a book on lute construction and it's all in metric as well. At this point, I kind of think in both, if it's in the right size range (small increments of an inch and millimeters). But 24ths and 48th of an inch? No thanks. That's gong too far for me.

What's the name of the tool you use to hammer the frets in?
@williamthrasher85405 жыл бұрын
if you half a one sixty-forth of an inch it is one twenty-eight of and inch so every mark is .0078125 of an inch
@williamthrasher85405 жыл бұрын
It should have been written as 1/128 that has to be a very fine scale even with my glasses on I would have trouble with using it I get a magnifier out to use a 1/64 scale or a 1/100 scale on a machinist scale. All of my drafting scale that I used to use are divided in 20/100 scale or 5 marks per 1/10.
