Some of the overhead-line D.C. (?) electrification equipment visible in this clip closely resembles that which was installed in the '40s and '50s on several main-line routes in the U.K., such as Manchester-Sheffield and Liverpool Street (London)-Shenfield.

Geoff Martin diesels are pretty much idling. They’re only there for the ICE radio capability (to my knowledge). The steam locos don’t have these radios installed on them. It helps Train Control locate each train movement.

I bet those things would of been loud as hell going through all those tunnels between zig zag and Lithgow. Funny how the old carriages sound a hell of a lot smoother than these new garbage trains.

I don't understand why diesel assist , Wow , one of these old steamers could do the job by itself ?

It's purely for reliability, I'm not sure about Australia but here in the UK diesel locomotives are used as a "just in case" option, even though most steam trains are perfectly reliable, there's always that one in a thousand chance. Since delays of even 15 mins can cost huge amounts for rail operators, it's best to cover all the bases if that makes sense

You gotta remember that its going up a mountain so the diesels are like brake vans
