A lot of lesser-known artists and songwriters were happy to have the royalty payments and a larger more well-known artist do a cover. It was quite commonplace in the 50s through the 80s.

Had to look it up myself Jamel, Delia Juanita Warrick (September 25, 1942 - October 18, 2008),[1] known professionally as Dee Dee Warwick, was an American soul singer. Born in Newark, New Jersey, she was the sister of singer Dionne Warwick, the niece of Cissy Houston, and a first cousin of singers Whitney Houston and Leontyne Price. Wikipedia. Knew Rod Stewart's was a cover, having most of his LPs, with and without the Faces from the 70s.

"We've Only Just Begun" was written for a commercial (by Paul Williams, who also sang it in the commercial), believe it or not. I always thought it was fleshed out as a full song and went straight to the Carpenters, but it looks like somebody else recorded it in-between. Here's a link to the original commercial: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b2i7apurrpyjfrM

Not exactly a cover, but maybe similar to the Bon Jovi song (different lyrics put to the music of another song). Parts of "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" by Rod Stewart is based on 2 earlier songs, which are "Taj Mahal" by Jorge Ben & "Put Something Down On It" by Bobby Womack. A lot of times the original was not a hit or maybe it was just an album track and not a single, but the remake was a big radio hit. So many people don't know it's a cover. Also probably not a lot of people today are listening to hit songs from the 1910s through 1940s. Songs that are called "standards" or "Great American Songbook" have been recorded by hundreds and even thousands of acts. So have many Christmas songs, such as "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer" & "Silent Night".

I wasn't too surprised about The Carpenters. There are a lot of artists that never wrote their own music. They did covers or songs that were written for them. Sinatra and Elvis come to mind. Also, many, if not most groups, start as cover bands. Heart and The Beatles are good examples.

According to Wikipedia, the Bon Jovi song was originally written for Bonnie Tyler by prolific song writer Desmond Child. When the song was not a success he kept the melody and wrote different lyrics with Jon Bon Jovi & Richie Sambora of Bon Jovi.
