Larry Larson of Larson Race Cars takes some time to talk to Andre about how he tunes the FASTEST street car in the world, his 5.89 second @ 244 MPH 3300HP Chevy S10, without the use of a dyno.Running Brodix block and heads plus Precision Turbo & Engine Pro Mod Gen 2 turbos the Fuel Tech FT600 controlled Pro Line Racing built 620ci Chevy based engine is both pump gas and methanol fed by Billet Atomizer injectors depending on if it’s on the strip or street.
Also discussed is the speed at which EFI technology is progressing and some of the changes Larry has gone through over the years while evolving from carburettor tuning along with listing some of the major advantages that EFI has over carbs. Touched on is Larry's preference for not using traction control and also individual cylinder tuning techniques.

Man... im blown away after this interview. I have never seen an interview with such a legend that was so on point. Every question you asked was excellent imho. I have no idea how you have the ability to stay soo cool when interviewing such a legend. I would have been a babbling idiot. I applaud you for your consistant stream of logical questions that I think even Larry appreciated. Its very rare for an interviewer to be able to ask so many in depth questions. I bet that was a breath of fresh air for Larry. Anyways i could go on, but ill stop. Subbed. 👍😎 keep up the good work.

I think it is the difference between knowing your shit and not. You can't ask intelligent questions if you don't understand it yourself. This is just a high level conversation between two people who know their stuff.

Agreed, 100% Larry must have loved to actually have to answer other stuff then "heyy how much power does it make?" and "yoo, what size turbos are those?*

Yes this is definitely a welcome change from the usual interview with guys like Larry that carries out like, "3300 wow man and how much boost is that? WOW crazy that is awesome." Just the usual sort of questions and answers that you can hear from 50 different places, but these questions and answers I can actually learn from and I credit all you guys at HPA.

Love to hear this guy talking about engine heat management because (not to brag= but I do anyway ,a long time ago did I knew for my first turbo set-up on my daily that heat management was "THE' key to a super reliable , top-performing engine inside any engine bay (Intercoolers/heat sensors+ gauges/extra extractor fans on demand + louvers)...the rest is text book easy...!!!

I’ve seen Larry on roadkill, and he’s the same here, just comes across so casual yet a wealth of knowledge, but still falls back on old school plug chops. Just shows on his thin end of the high hp scale how even digital data isn’t enough. Gotta respect these guys who learnt it hands on.

Plug reading is not a lost art, people have gotten lazy myself included. That said nearly no plug reading in F1 or P1 at Le Mans, lots of them are using leading edge EFI that is too expensive for the general public to run.

@@dj4monie reading plugs tells you how it runs at wide open, good for the drag track, useless for street

I can understand why Larry likes to use the track as his tuning tool, hes old school being doing it a long time. The knowledge Larry has collected over the years on the track tuning is incredible, you just cant replicate real world conditions on the dyno..He is a class act... Great interview👍

Only as Tony Palo from T1 has said it's hard on parts, tires and eats up more fuel. In Shane T's case the Arabs have money to burn so they don't care. For the average enthusiast you do whatever you can afford and what your tuner is comfortable doing if you aren't doing it. Track testing is best done during track rentals because typical Street Legal Drags do not prep the surface well enough. Not everybody is doing No Prep which is a nebulous term anyway to some it means no track prep to others it's means no major engine work in the pits.

Super interview Great questions Great Answers Back in 2001, I ran a 1400 hp Twin Turbo, 4.5 liter (274”) Stage II Buick Grand National V6 running a Fast ECU. Ran a 7.89 @ 182. Buick was the pioneer of all this technology on the street, and with Buddy Ingersoll’s competitive run in 1986 IHRA Pro Stock. After that...IHRA outlawed Turbos in Pro Stock. m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/sGOTdKBmgrVsbZI

So do you give any feed back to ECU manufacturers regarding potential future features, updates and or fixes? It would seem foolish to not have an open ear to any imput you or your colleges might have. Cheers.

We give feedback and request fixes if there are issues, but all tuners do this to be honest. Most companies only really have issues with new releases that get ironed out over time if they're dedicated to their product/s, which most of the names in the business you will know are to be fair these days - Taz.

At the end if the day reading a plug is still a thing even with a million sensors nothing will tell you exactly what’s going on in the combustion chamber like the spark plug

Yes and no. If you know exactly where you have cut the engine and are reading fresh plugs they can help you confirm the other data you already have, but alone and without special attention to get the most data you can from them you're laptop is still going to tell you much much more - Taz.
