When you want to produce 2000HP from a turbocharged 4 cylinder engine it is logical that you’re going to lean heavily on your turbo setup. Shane Tecklenburg, the Mazworkz Racing Engines and Tekno Toyz team reached this goal with their MoTeC controlled 88mm turbo setup some time ago, but when reaching for 3000HP it was evident a single was not going to cut it.
Shane and Andre explain some of the cooling and packaging issues around large single turbo setups before explaining how the current 380 PSI capable compound system consisting of 2 large turbochargers, which technically due to pressure ratios operate at around 30 PSI a piece, are feeding one smaller turbo which combined enables them to push past those 2000HP limits and reach higher power outputs.
Also discussed are the advantages and disadvantages of intercooling while running methanol fuel and the decision process around it as well as how you control boost in a compound turbo setup and the parameters that must be considered to ensure the boost is kept at the target levels.
Lastly, Shane shares his goal of hitting 5 seconds with this 4 cylinder SR20 based engine in the race with Jett Racing to be the first to do so.
“The more knowledge you gain, the more questions you have.” - Shane T

Diesel have been using compound turbo setup for ages, most stock semi truck diesel engines run upward of 65-80 psi and run 70.000lbs injectors , like he said nothing new really. But on a Gas engine its tricky to setup and get running properly. 3000 Hp on a small 4 cyl is damn impressive.

Its tricky to get the correct size turbos even on a diesel. Dudes have been doing it long enough that the maths are known much better in diesel applications.
@geluix69
@geluix69 5 жыл бұрын
RedmistAU well also diesels do not burn the same fuel and do not have have an ignition system. Diesels need compression to ignite the fuel , whereas gas engines to much compression is very bad for detonation unless your burning nitromethane.

I love how he talks about how impossible running a 5 sounded years ago. And now they’re knocking on the door of 5’s. Yet they had to turn down the power they could possibly make. I wonder in how many years 380psi is not gonna be enough just how if you talked about running 75-80 psi 10-15 years ago on a 4cyl they would of though you were crazy. But now we’re their. When will we actually use 300psi? But in all seriousness 3000hp on a 4cyl is absolutely astonishing. That’s 750 HP PER CYLINDER. I struggle to make that with 8 cylinders 😂.

The assumption is the more turbos the more complicated it should be. Kevin Jewer's setup is the same, takes the signal from the top of the port. He went from air-to air, then methanol which is what Jett is going to air to water which is what Shane explains the benefit over the added weight. Another 900 whp offsets the 80-100 lbs added, very easily. Actually more people are figuring that out, just make more power.

What Shane just mention about making the same torque at a higher RPM is right on par with what I’ve done with the stock internals Hayabusa Dyno Tune it could handle 200 foot pounds of torque early on in the booth strange went to a larger turbo and made 200 foot pounds of torque near red light hence a stock internal Busa made 320 hp at red line 350 was possible but I ran out of injector i’ve been wanting to build compound turbos for a while now I’m glad to see somebody’s done it that’s making real power in numbers

I have a feeling that Shane found compounding turbos "easy" because he'd crunched plenty of numbers before picking the parts to assemble the whole thing. Just as I know I'd have blown many engines trying the same thing. Fantastic interview explaining lots of complicated ideas in a way that even a simple guy like me can intuitively understand.

ALL competition engines are built by crunching the numbers first. That's the ONLY way to do it. Successful engine builders don't just guess at a bunch of parts, then throw the motor together and pray. That would be just stupid.

I had to watch this 4 times to fully comprehend this but what I realize is that compound set ups are the best for high hp 4cyl.

This bloke is amazing. The last time you had him on he was just as informative. Also I think he should let the engine hit 380psi. Just once, just to make sure his math is correct, make sure it's being filmed tho. So one thing I'm curious on, if you had a compound setup that used supercharger then turbo, isn't the power going to eventually be limited by how much air can be dragged thru the supercharger, or for that matter, pushed out the exhaust housing of the turbo? Surely there is a point at which the whole system either chokes the intake, or back pressures the exhaust?

Of course, EVERYTHING has limits. By the way, blown diesels have used combinations of turbos feeding roots blowers for decades already.
