This is absolutely brilliant! I had a flat copper roll for crafts that I cut into strips and made 2-3" collars centered around new seedlings. It worked, but the wind would blow them off so I was constantly moving them back. I love this hack for two reasons: The wind won't blow them away. Getting into electroculture, I believe the copper will be an enhancement to that process somehow. So glad I found this and will be getting some today... if they have them at my local Dollar.25 store.

Aluminum foil wrapped around the stems works pretty well. Used/food soiled foil is fine and doesn't deteriorate. It's seemingly endlessly reusable if you are gentle with it. Sometimes I wrap it around cardboard strips to make "border walls" which can be as big or small as you want. Method #2: lay a piece of damp cardboard or rigid plastic where the buggers will be gathered by morning and dispose of them as desired.

"Pesky slugs". Now that putting it mildly. I have a major RAGE ON for these most detestable destructive ugly little things that i can hardly stand it. Considering their size it's unbelievable the damage they do. I hate them with such a vengeance that I about lose my mind when I find them them under pots. I decimate them by squashing till there is nothing left... which actually isn't easy to do cuz they slide under any pressure. I was cutting them in half but they still crawled.

Nifty idea. Snails and slugs are my nemesis. To catch snails I hammer 1” poly pipe in 1.5’ lengths into the ground and place an upturned plastic pot on top. (Forgive me if I haven’t used the right terms here, I live in a metric country) thumb sized in diameter and mid shin in height, 25mm and 400mm with 100mm in the ground. We sometimes also spray the pipe and pot with sugary yeast water. I place these around the edges of my garden areas and water around them and not the garden. The snails tend to find them and hide under the pot at the top making them very easy to collect.

Yes, like he says be sure to use protective eye wear. I did this and had regular glasses on allowing open space for a small piece to fly in my eye. They do fly like crazy and there are lots of them. I was growing plantain for medicinal reasons and it really attracted the slugs in California winter. I would go out every night and pick off all the little slugs and it is the first time I have gotten control of little slugs in that part of the garden. A little jaggery or brown sugar and yeast and water in dishes works. Catch all kinds of flying things in the trees with that, too. But the copper scourers are awesome for something like a little citrus I had girdled once. It might have been rats, but it would probably protect some against those, too.

Why not just put the copper around the planter so the slugs can't crawl up into the planter itself? I'm thinking of building some raised planters on legs and placing the legs on bowls that have sticky paste in them, to isolate the planter from any crawling bugs. This copper sounds great for slugs but I'm also concerned with earwigs.

You can use copper tape on your planters as well. Both if things are really bad!

I've been using these sponges for several years now, yes they need to be changed during the season because they deteriorate from rain and lose effectiveness, but it works very well!

It would be much easier to put that around the pot of the plant or around the whole inside of your raised bed. If you put that around the plant stem in the heat, you could cook your plant that is a metal that gets hot.

I’ve tried copper tape and high didn’t work , the little buggers just climbed over it. The only success I’ve had has been with nematodes- that seems to nuke ‘em pretty well.

Correct, copper against snails or slugs is a myth . It does not help unless you put a voltage on it. But this is difficult to keep isolated from the ground. Maybe the razor structure helps a bit but not because it is made from copper

I was thinking around the edges of container beds, but the slugs could be in the soil. What do you think?
@zimmejoc
@zimmejoc 2 жыл бұрын
I think that might get expensive. In my bed I would need 20 feet to surround my area. To wrap each plant would require less than 2 feet of material. For me, ten times the effort is something I am willing to put in to save 10 times the cost of materials. Surrounding the area assumes, as Lucy says below, that no slugs are inside the perimeter when you surround the area.

I prefer the beer trap method. 1, because it gives me an excuse (not that I need one) to buy more beer and 2, Nasty as the slimy little things are, they're just trying to eat, so if I gotta kill 'em, I can't think of a better way to go than in the garden in a veritable lake of beer.

I tried the beer trick too. Bad idea! Not only did I have hundreds of slugs from my garden , the neighbors‘ slugs showed up to the party too - wreaking havoc on the way to the beer trap 😡 the next day, I was out at night with a flashlight and collected around 700 slugs.
