"Pesky slugs". Now that putting it mildly. I have a major RAGE ON for these most detestable destructive ugly little things that i can hardly stand it. Considering their size it's unbelievable the damage they do. I hate them with such a vengeance that I about lose my mind when I find them them under pots. I decimate them by squashing till there is nothing left... which actually isn't easy to do cuz they slide under any pressure. I was cutting them in half but they still crawled.

Nifty idea. Snails and slugs are my nemesis. To catch snails I hammer 1” poly pipe in 1.5’ lengths into the ground and place an upturned plastic pot on top. (Forgive me if I haven’t used the right terms here, I live in a metric country) thumb sized in diameter and mid shin in height, 25mm and 400mm with 100mm in the ground. We sometimes also spray the pipe and pot with sugary yeast water. I place these around the edges of my garden areas and water around them and not the garden. The snails tend to find them and hide under the pot at the top making them very easy to collect.

@@robinm5694 hi. I know they are available on Amazon in the uk but it may be a product that is subject to some sort of import controls. They are a bit expensive but for a well set up serious garden they are a great asset. Work by stopping the slugs and snails from being fertile I think. If you can find them and the temperature is suitable I really recommend them … or ducks ( a nicer option)😃

Yes, like he says be sure to use protective eye wear. I did this and had regular glasses on allowing open space for a small piece to fly in my eye. They do fly like crazy and there are lots of them. Make sure if they fly onto a sidewalk to sweep good or use a blower so anyone barefoot doesn’t get stuck. (I got my finger stuck and it does hurt).

Aluminum foil wrapped around the stems works pretty well. Used/food soiled foil is fine and doesn't deteriorate. It's seemingly endlessly reusable if you are gentle with it. Sometimes I wrap it around cardboard strips to make "border walls" which can be as big or small as you want. Method #2: lay a piece of damp cardboard or rigid plastic where the buggers will be gathered by morning and dispose of them as desired.

This is absolutely brilliant! I had a flat copper roll for crafts that I cut into strips and made 2-3" collars centered around new seedlings. It worked, but the wind would blow them off so I was constantly moving them back. I love this hack for two reasons: The wind won't blow them away. Getting into electroculture, I believe the copper will be an enhancement to that process somehow. So glad I found this and will be getting some today... if they have them at my local Dollar.25 store.

IDK your channel, just saw it and clicked on it. Yes copper is great. Slugs have to remain moist. I always hated pouring salt around or directly on them. I don't love slugs, but I love animals and the salt thing just seems to cruel. Imagine you being slowly dissolved in acid or something. Gives me the willy's. You don't wanna squish them either. We used to come home late at night, and the long dark walkway to the house was a guessing game lol. Ya, we started using lights duh..but just saying. You step on one and well....let's just say it's everywhere. I know all the tricks, taught to me by my father, who grew up really poor, way way out in the country. The literally self sustained themselves. DISH SOAP and warm water will kill just about anything. Bagworms to ants. Ants hate cinnamon. It cuts their feet or something, but it washes away. The "pest" guy came around the other day, talking about this new method to treat ant probs, it doesn't wash away or wear off. I really wouldn't let him get any further lol. He did say, will you just hear me out. WELL, I was in the garage, and have one of those nets that go across you 2 car garage door, magnet clasp in the center right? I only say this cuz it's funny. When he asked if I'd just hear him out, I said look....I'm really busy, and see this net? I have a really ill person inside, and man he was GONE. So now I call it my Covid net. I don't have anyone sick inside lol, it just popped into my head, because I HATE door to door salesmen. If I wanted someone to treat something for me. I will call YOU, YOU don't come calling ME.

I was growing plantain for medicinal reasons and it really attracted the slugs in California winter. I would go out every night and pick off all the little slugs and it is the first time I have gotten control of little slugs in that part of the garden. A little jaggery or brown sugar and yeast and water in dishes works. Catch all kinds of flying things in the trees with that, too. But the copper scourers are awesome for something like a little citrus I had girdled once. It might have been rats, but it would probably protect some against those, too.

@@cltinturkey maybe just throw it at the slugs. The time when slugs are the worst here is in summer it's dry than anyway. Throwing a line around each bed is not to much DE. Its wat cheaper compared to using copper if you have large beds. Repeat in the evening after watering maybe. Or have the line of DE out of watering distance. Scrap copper is high now, in my garden i know it will be stolen. Even my eggs get stolen, eggtrays included sometimes😑

@@pinocolada4254 Thanks! We've started doing the nightly slug hunt. Go out with a flashlight and bag and pick them off, then salt them and discard. If we do it three nights in a row a few times a month, it seems to reduce the volume. I don't mind sharing garden bounty, but theft drives me crazy. Hope you're able to catch the culprits.

Great idea! I just got some copper tape and am trying that now. If that doesn’t work this is next!

I would put it all around the entire area rather than right on each plant maybe. What do you think?

I was thinking around the edges of container beds, but the slugs could be in the soil. What do you think?

I think that might get expensive. In my bed I would need 20 feet to surround my area. To wrap each plant would require less than 2 feet of material. For me, ten times the effort is something I am willing to put in to save 10 times the cost of materials. Surrounding the area assumes, as Lucy says below, that no slugs are inside the perimeter when you surround the area.

Idk but Aluminum foil wrapped around the stems works pretty well. And doesn't deteriorate.

Could you put the copper around the perimeter of your planter to stop them sliding in?
@arnold894

I am going to try the copper. I would think you would need to watch the planter for a while in case there are already snail eggs in the soil.

Good idea and works on slugs. Problem is after time copper coating deteriorates and turns dull, I believe the copper does something to the stock just under ground. Had plants break off there in some wind, stocks didn't look good where it broke. Maybe the copper rings shouldn't be up against stocks

A brilliant idea. As I was watching the video I had an idea. I just wonder if this remedy would also have any effect on preventing the squash vine borer on the stems of squash? I may give it a try.
