It's intriguing to see that babies, no matter animal or human, we all want to taste and, most specifically, feel through the mouth to 'see' what materials, etc are about. Since it is about new things, learning through the mouth in combination with all other senses, curiosity is so important. Most think it's been done because they may want to eat it, but it is all a learning curve. Of course, you do not let them go out of control with the eating part. It, too, has balance. It's great to see her already so comfortable around the both of you! 👌
@MTN_BUILT3 күн бұрын
I think you are spot on! They just want to sort out their world! Thats why we aren’t too hard on her about it, but do set boundaries because she would start using teeth if we didn’t watch it lol ☺️

I absolutely love all of this. Personally I've come a long way to learn to treat horses more fairly, and nowadays my go-to especially with shy horses is always positive reinforcement, and calmness. Food is a powerful motivator, but of course you have to teach the horse to not invade your space to get rewards first. I am very happy to see that when getting her comfortable with handling and feet, you are not flooding her and "waiting for her to give up", but actively trying not to cross that treshold of "oh no, this is too much for me, I have to react". That is what proper desensitizing is, not chasing your horse around until they give up! This is the first video I see from your channel btw, and usually I am a bit sceptical of the approach of western (and many other) people. So many talk about breaking the horses and want to cause these big reactions so they can have the excuse to shut them down. What you are doing is much more kind and fair to the little filly! Good luck with her, she's a cutie!
@salla87932 күн бұрын
It is also so funny to see that what you do with the feet is essentially the same thing I do with my dogs. Especially my female greyhound was very scared of clipping nails when she came to me at 6 years old, almost a year ago. I was careful to not flood her or force her, kept my hold of her paws light so the pressure would not bother so much, and just petted her and remained calm myself. With sighthounds i have noticed how big of a difference your own mentality makes to things. Now, she almost falls asleep when i clip her nails, and comes to me on her own when I have the clippers in hand. Amazing what a calm and reinforcing approach can do to trust!

She reminds me of the first foal that I raised. She was born in our pony lot. Her whinny was so high-pitched that I named her Piccolo. She was a stout girl because her sire was a foundatoin type QH & her dam was a medium pony. She loved her rump scratched & would come flying when she saw me & back up to the gate for a good scratch session. She scared a lot of visitors that way. 😂😂😂

Thank you for watching!! Yes I almost made one tonight since we have 2 videos about her already ☺️ I’ll definitely make one! It’s called a Blocker Tie Ring! It can help them from panicking and hurting themselves ☺️👍🏼

The importance of safe early familiarization with so many novel sights, sounds, smells, and being handled all over just can't be emphasized enough. It's the same with dogs as puppies. More fun, safe experiences tend to create low to no bad reactivity later. Having said that, it is entirely possible to desensitize and familiarize at a later age. It's just easier now. She is like uh, um, sidewalk? Weird on ma toes. Miss Mesa 🌻🌼🏵 Yesss, like the name.

@pawsandhooves-l2s3 күн бұрын
Newborn photos are the best to go by to know what colour the foal is. So she is a buckskin. With a grey mum, she might grey out as she ages but it didn’t look like she’s going to by the newborn photo. The first shed is always the darkest. I’m no expert, but this is just what I’ve learned over the years.
@MTN_BUILT3 күн бұрын
That would be awesome! Her silver that’s come in looks like roaning almost and is definitely part of her coat, I don’t think she will loose it with her summer coat. The hair underneath on her rear where it’s lighter almost looks like that grey/buckskin she was as a newborn. Haha we are definitely curious!! ☺️ thank you!

Too bad she wasn’t a gelding because the name Grizzly would have suited her current multi-coloured coat. She is so pretty and you have done a wonderful job teaching her about her new world. I suspect given she has already shown different colours at different times of year that her colour will change along with the seasons: she might end up as the horse of many colours, from The Wizard of Oz. Mesa has landed in a good home and I’m excited to see her grow up with such kind partners. :)
