Learning the Lines

Күн бұрын

After lending a hand on Lucidity, it was time to sell Somnium. Initially Taylor reached out to us via email after binge-watching all of our episodes. (Sidenote: I want to make a shirt that says "Learning the Lines - At the end of the rabbit hole where you want to be."). He fell in love with the idea of finishing Somnium and explained in his email that he wanted to buy her from us. After meeting for a beer and trying to talk Taylor out of buying Somnium... I just couldn't convince him otherwise. He was still interested and wanted to see her in person. That weekend I showed Somnium to him and showed him the good, the bad, and the ugly. His mind was made up.
I knew Taylor was a grad student and didn't have a crazy amount of cash. I also knew that we grossly overpaid when we initially bought Somnium. We ended up spending around $10,000 on her after buying the new engine. We also added around $10,000 worth of new equipment and work, mostly paid for by sponsorships, but it was still value nonetheless. Knowing all this, we offered the boat to Taylor for $3,000. In a way we wanted to pay our good fortune forward to him, and in a way we also wanted to help someone else out with a dream.
I know we "lost money" on Somnium. We get that. But it's all part of the cost of education in our minds. We earned invaluable knowledge and experience in exchange for the money we "lost."

Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. For this reason our channel is very DIY focused, with the goal to show anyone watching that a lot is possible if you're not afraid to make some mistakes along the way.

I was really falling in love with Somnium as you fixed her up more and more. It felt like you were her guardian. Her steward. Her protector. You have the skills and passion to make her better than ever. But you may have taken on too much at once. There were too many unfinished projects underway at once, and perhaps that tarnished your relationship with her. It is sad that we will never see her become all that she could have been. On a positive note, you have taught all of us in KZbin Land some valuable lessons. As well as entertaining us. Thank-you 🙂

You are in your 20's but have already started life off right when you passed it on ... I am 72 and have found the more that I give the more that comes back to me in my life ... I'm not talking just material things but in the quality of my life ... it truly is more blessed to give than receive. Having said that also let me pass on a lesson my older brother taught me after telling me how our grandfather had taught it to him. If someone wants to give you something never judge whether they can afford it or their reason, just accept and say "thank you", after he taught me that, he gave me a $50.00 check, that I would have turned down otherwise, he was sneaky that way LOL.

I have looked over the basic drawings of the 272, and from my experience in boat building here's my comment for Taylor on taking out the forward bulk head. The main support for the hull sides (free-board) in the bow is the "V" berth frame work itself. The plane of the bed is just about half way from the keel to the deck and works like a lateral stringer. It keeps the sides of the hull from "oil canning" or rattling loose the deck in a pounding sea. The thwart-ship support for the "V" berth framework is the bulkhead, keeping the open end of the "V" from being pinched. In a house, walls hold up the roof, but although the bulkhead(s) in the boat offer some rigidity to the topside decks and deck-house, they are more for support for the hull... *except in this case, with a deck stepped mast* . Both forward bulkheads in the 272 transmit the torque of the mast on the deck above, down into the rest of the hull structure and framework. A little extra "beef" added to the open end of the berth will stabilize the "V", but mast support in the topside deck is the main concern here. The bulkhead(s) can be removed if they are replaced with a fairly hefty rib or overhead beam (head knocker) that are either glassed in to the overhead or (preferably) through bolted through the top deck. It would need to curve around and tie into the framework of the interior deck and hull stringers. This connection to existing framework carries the mast's torque down to the keel. A beam rib could be fabricated by layering several 3/4" or 1" marine grade plywood to build up a 4" x 4" beam (intuitive engineering on this). The most difficult area would be how to transition under the horizontal side deck. If you abruptly change direction in the beam to go flat under this area (picture an ox bow) you create a breaking point in the beam. A modified arch is the shape you want here. In this boat, most of the interior structure can be altered safely without a lot of re-engineering, but in the 272 these two bulkheads are the most important structure because they disburse the large forces that build up at the base of the mast away from the top deck. If you proceed, do NOT go "cheaply"! Over-engineer anything you do in this two feet of the boat.
@LearningtheLines
@LearningtheLines 6 жыл бұрын
3DPDK Thank you for another thoughtful response! We are going to pass your suggestions on to Taylor. When inside the boat it seems like the more aft bulkheads are doing the majority of the work, but from your response it seems the forward ones are essentially just as important?
@3DPDK
@3DPDK 6 жыл бұрын
You are correct that the structure around the companion way is a major hull support. The complex shapes that all come together in this area add a lot of rigidity to the deck and keeps the hull from collapsing inward. If this was a keel stepped mast, the forward bulkhead isn't as critical and can be moved or replace with a light rib without much loss of structural integrity. From what I see the 272 has a quarter berth. Maybe Taylor should consider that for sleeping. The one thing a hard core sailor learns is that life on a boat (usually) means minimum sleeping space.
@Barsprojects
@Barsprojects 6 жыл бұрын
I might be mistaken but I didn't hear anything about Taylor going sailing. If Taylor is only interested in living in the harbour (or motoring), he wouldn't need the bulkhead maybe? and step the mast down? What about some vertical posts instead of bulkheads? Just a thought. Thank you guys and congrats, Taylor!
@3DPDK
@3DPDK 6 жыл бұрын
This is just my opinion, but if you decided to buy a camper as a temporary housing solution, knowing it was temporary (housing while attending college), would you pull the motor, transmission and fuel tank out just to add some storage space, or would you leave it in tact to ensure it will sell to the next guy when the time comes. Actually, having a post under the mast and attaching to the keel is a legitimate solution if the connection points, mast base and keel mount, are built to withstand the pressure of sailing. The trade off is having a large post in the middle of the passageway from salon to forward berth. There's more than one solution, but simply tearing things out regardless of the boats original purpose, pretty much relegates the boat to spending the rest of it's useful days as floating housing (and really very small in this case) and buyers for such a thing are few and far between.
@LearningtheLines
@LearningtheLines 6 жыл бұрын
Taylor does plan on sailing the boat as well. Jordan did recommend using the quarter berth as a place to sleep, so Taylor is considering that option as well. He wants to have a large battery bank because he is now considering an electric motor. He's certainly thinking about all the possibilities. I think all of this feedback will give him even more to think of. Lol.

Congratulations on the new boat. Don't think of the the Somnium as a loss but more as a life lesson. In the beginning it was exciting to get the Somnium in the water and just have fun. Yes things needed fixed and or replaced and one thing led to another and by the end, you didn't even want to work on it judging by the look on your faces. As Taylor said, it was "At the end of the rabbit hole." Those are the life lessons that you can look back on when you start to fix or repair your new boat. When you put the Somnium on land, you came up with a priority list. Make one before you start on the new boat such as the stairs and take one project at a time. I look forward to the next adventure.

That area is a molded fiberglass liner that was tabbed to the hull after it came from the mold, it's a not integral to the hull but does provide some support similar to a bulkhead would. I'd suggest inspecting the tabbing to see if it's in good shape, dig around for any rot in your floor beams. If you don't notice anything I'd just monitor it and see if it gets worse. If not just live with it, its a 30 some year old boat and things shift and flex but the boats not going to sink because of this.
@LearningtheLines

Ekaterina Cherkez Thanks for the feedback! We will have to figure out where we can see the tabbing to investigate it. Jordan may already know, so I'll pass this info on to him.

I'd had some experience with ferro cement for various home projects ( mix by weight 2:1:one half ), fine-sand, cement,water). The old deck could theoretically be used as a form for a very thin ferro-cement deck 10mm, ditto for the bukheads you need to strengthen. With some neat cement its waterproof and very strong.

Probably water damage from rain right below hatch. Counter top warped. Hatch is letting water in, you can check it with a hose. The fact that the stairs fell apart is a clear indication of rot. You have to find out how extensive it is. Check all the wood.....everywhere.

Learning the Lines While your at it. 1. change out the mixing elbow, not that hard. 2.replace engine belts, water pump if has rust., check hoses, exhaust hose. 3. Plan to replace batteries. 4. Order spare starter/solenoid, cheap on amazon. Replace electronics as needed, get a garmin gps. If your planning on getting a spare anchor get a Manson holds bettet then any on market. This is just a short list. B.O.A.T. break out another thousand.

Do you think we would need to replace the mixing elbow with such a new engine? It only has about 300 hours now. I do think replacing the belts should be considered. We will check the water pump for rust and look over the hoses. We actually took the batteries from Somnium to Freebie. We will look into getting a spare starter. We've got a Garmin GPS for the boat. We will have to look into Manson anchors. We loved our old Rocna anchor.

Forgot you had a new engine. If your going to Caribbean, I would take some spares. I would check mixing elbow anyway to see if clogged up. Mine was destroying impellers, pinky size opening. Build up of baked on minerals, rock hard.

Hey, guys! Congrats on finding a [rabbit hole visitor]! I'm glad you guys gave Taylor such a sweet deal. The way I look at it, you gave him the boat, and reimbursed you for some of the gear you put into it. Glad you took that approach! If the problem is not structural, perhaps you could connect some metal L-brackets along the top of the fiberglass, at various heights, so the overall affect is the horizontal pieces of the brackets are all level (with each other) and mount the counter top to that. obviously, if there's a structural issue causing the f/g to sag, that needs to be addressed. Good luck w/that!

Thanks for the feedback! We're the bottom of the rabbit hole where you want to be! Lol. Hi guys, older Endeavours are known for water intrusion thru the companion way. It is possible that your countertop is no longer level because of the water drops coming in from the entryway... That would explain as well why the steps failed from under you. I had water intrusion issues on all the portholes and the entryway on my 1976 Endeavour 32 Aspara and had to replace them all. Great work, good luck !

You got it right! The knowledge you gain and the people you meet are the real value in this lifestyle. Good on ya! The counter top angle may be due to hull twist. Either in an incident or over time, the liner has shifted higher on the port side. Check for gaps on the starboard side top of the liner. Not sure what you can do, but try to twist the hull the other way.

I could be wrong, but I think those two buikheads act as a compression post for the mast. If you were to remove both of them, I think you would need to add a compression post. The other thing I have seen done is construct a custom beam that is scribed along the cabin top and then supported at each end. This opens the entire front of the boat up but still supports the compression of the mast. Remember, the force is multiplied many times on the mast base when the boat is actually underway. I think a good example of what I am talking about is the Capri 18 or 22 sailboat. Good luck!! That will give you a very nice large berth area. You could possibly fit a pullman style berth in there with a bench chair if you do that. I can't wait to see it. Please encourage him to start a video of the work which is what I love best about KZbin! Thanks Guys and Happy New Year!!!

Check very thoroughly for hidden rot in your bilge in that area and under the motor. If it's wood you can check by taking a sharp flat blade screwdriver and pushing it into the wood, if it's solid it doesn't go more than a 1/8th of an inch deep. ... if you don't find any then I would put it down to a poor production issue, level your countertop and get on with getting Freeby ready to sail. (I have over 40 years in construction).
@LearningtheLines
@LearningtheLines 6 жыл бұрын
Obit 123 That's along the lines of what I was thinking. I want to get a good look in the bilge area for issues. I was thinking it might be that the cabin sole was sagging due to lack of support (from rotting issues). I'm almost hoping it's just poor production quality though. Lol. We will explore more next time we go out there.

The uneven countertop is definitely significant. Approximately 35 years ago I was working as a carpenter on a Gov't Houseboat made from 1/4" aluminum sheathing welded together. Apparent;ly it was some top secret houseboat , at the time, headed for the persian gulf. Anyway I was given the task of properly lining the interior aluminum with wood and sometimes it was pine which demanded a complete lining keeping the wood from touching aluminum whenever pine was used as in framing. A task at hand demanded I line this closet with plywood and whomever welded the closet together really screwed up because no two sides/walls were the same measurements. Rather than questioning why which they normally would not answer anyway I spent the better part of an evening shift with great difficulty lining this closet and in the morning when the head of the project showed up for work I was fired for not realizing everything should have been equal in measurements. You know damned if you do and damned if you don"t. I do love writing and communicating. My point is the counters should be perfectly matched from one side to the other. I would inspect what is below and behind each part of that countertop till you find out what is creating the uneven dimensions and that should help get to the bottom of this mystery. I tend to doubt it was presented to the original owner in that condition. You see. Good Luck and than ks for all the sharing.

You have to look around to see if there is any indication of sagging. Severe cracking of interior fglass moulding. Pull up as much of sole to inspect stringers and frames. If things dont look right, pull the boat out and set as per boats drawings, check for alignment, levelness and sagging. It may just be how the boat was put together but it don't hurt to sound it

A possible option for Taylor to consider rather than bulkhead removal is the creation of a trotter box into the locker area. It would have to be built sufficiently strongly to carry the loads as already mentioned by 3DPDK but when not being used as foot room can be used for storing the bedding. It would mean sleeping with his head at the bow which may preclude double occupancy.

Taylor, should NOT remove those bulkheads. They are there to absorb mast compression. Btw, what is the depth of those slips at low tide? Is water and electricity included? Liveaboard allowed? Parking for car?

I believe around 10 feet at low tide. Water and electricity is an extra $30.00 a month flat fee. No living aboard allowed but yes there is parking. No real amenities like bathrooms/showers/etc. It's basically just boat storage.

Bon vent to all you. p.s. on the bulkhead - there be dragons. I have carefully relocated a bulkhead before, but never cut one out, but regardless, it's a job that will make the boat uninhabitable. So much GRP dust, and mess. I'd advise leaving it be. Perhaps an infill for the vee berth would suffice?

My son had an interesting question, Could it be that when the motor was taken out to be rebuilt that while they had the counter top off they may have trimmed the fiberglass support on the sink side, then just put it back and over time with moisture the stair rails ended up resting on the counter at just about the breaking point? You just happened to be the last straw so to speak. You see it as soon as you pulled up the counter if that were the case. You probably have it solved already, but that was the first thing that came up. We haven't done boats, but we work on buses and old diesel cars. So moving, or cutting something out of the way is sometimes necessary, and when it gets put back it's not always completely right.

At first glance it appears those bulkheads act as a compression post for the mast. You could remove them but you would need to install a support beam glassed into the deckhead. I would consider installing new bulkheads aft . Do this BEFORE removing the existing bulkheads and slack off the shrouds and stays, this will prevent distortion of the deckhead.
@LearningtheLines
@LearningtheLines 6 жыл бұрын
There is definitely a compression post that's attached to the more aft bulkheads. Whether or not the two forward ones he wants to remove provide any support I think is still up for debate. Better to be safe than sorry and install a support beam as you're suggesting. Thanks for the feedback!

I could be wrong but if I pause the video and look at you counter tops it looks like it has a dip in the middle where the companion way stairs are. If i had to guess by simply looking at that freeze frame and with the way your steps collapsed i would think possibly after years of walking across the counter to enter the galley that it has simply pushed the middle down and pulled the sides in. I would probably put a new counter in and really reinforce that opening above the motor to support the wear and tear.

hrkid53 I fully agree with you on this I would say the countertop is out of whack after years of being walked on water soaking into the MDF I would replace that I don't believe you would have a structural sag on that side unless you have wood rot underneath the fiberglass somewhere on the left side of the stairs... I would definitely pull the countertop run a level from side to side of the fiberglass and see where that gives you
@3DPDK
@3DPDK 6 жыл бұрын
I agree. The difference in height is an optical illusion. Unfortunately a level is pretty much a useless tool on a boat. The culprit is a warped (probably plywood) counter top. Like hrkid53 says, it has bent from carrying the load of the ladder. If the deck support structure is that bad you would see it spring as you step on the deck around the engine enclosure. A new counter and maybe a little heftier cross support underneath is probably the answer. Part of the trick to marine cabinetry is not "ruler accuracy" but "making it look right" ;)

I would be hesitant to remove those bulkheads. On a boat that small, most horizontal and vertical structures do not occur merely for cosmetic reasons, but are all tied in to form the engineering design of the hull. You are concerned with a counter top that might be out of alignment? So too, I would be concerned with Taylor's removal of two large, interior bulkheads.
@LearningtheLines

But I will say this - I remember a statistic from my weekly, Coast Guard required (wink, wink), Safety Training Meetings on my supply boat, that some higher than expected percentage, like 75% of serious injuries on vessels of all types, happen while in port and pier side. I think it's because of exactly what you said; it happens where you least expect it and aren't concerned about pitching and rolling decks.

To do it once and do it right, examine those stair dupports all the way down to the hull. If nothing has rotted or cracked, just build the new to accomodate. Assume nothing, trust nothing. And vonsider new stros thst are curved or angled, Beneteau style, so the outer piece of each step is 'flat' when you are heeled. SO much nicer when you are really sailing, very little more effort when you are building anyway.

I'm replacing rotten stringers, bulkhead, and transom on a power boat right now and it is very time consuming. Hope your boat is okay. To me, it looks like the engine is supported by a fiberglass grid, not wood coated in fiberglass. The counter top is definitely being through off by lack of proper support from underneath. I'm thinking you have a sagging stringer something causing this. Go ahead and knock on the entirety of the structure underneath the engine with a hammer. Solid= good. Hollow sounding=rotten.

Been looking at pics of Endeavour 32's on line, it looks like what your seeing is normal. It appears that the port counter is slightly higher than the stbd counter, giving it the appearance of sagging. Since the interior is a one piece drop in component, it should be easy to see sagging by looking for severe cracking in the fiberglass. Just google your boat and look at the pics. TTFN

As far as the counter top not being level it was probably a flaw from the the factory that was not noticeable. The up right on the port side can be trimmed at the top to get thee counter top level. Your structural integrity is probably all good. As when they bond the inner hull to the outer hul the two aren't perfectly level and at times cause this counter not being true level. Also it may be an optical illusion and she is listing to starboard and making it look unlevel. Do some measuring from floor to counter and from ceiling to counter.

I had a Columbia 44 which my business partner kept leaving the back stay too tight on. It eventually buckled the deck fiberglass. Cost 12,000 back in the late 80's to reinforce. Not repair. Just reinforce. In your case, the shrouds could have been out of balance for a very long time and has buckled one side of the hull. Only a structural marine engineer would be able to tell and suggest a fix. I hope it's just part of the boat's design on the cabinets.

Rather than remove them... Cut into them to elongate the entry. You still want crush force to hold that mast and deck up, and that bulkhead is doing just that. But you can make the opening larger and start the V-berth at the first bulkhead. This then gives him a great anchor to put in some shelves, no cabinets as they'll hold moisture. Stainless Wire Racks cut up to fit work great. Ok. Now onto your boat... I have seen this. It MAY be just age and the fact that the boats glass is flexible. My 36' Beneteau aft cabin door will NOT latch when it's on jack stands. Won't. Put her in the water and it latches fine. Why? Fiberglass is flexible. That counter was never reinforced properly when it was built. Back then they thought maybe it would hold shape but over time it flexed and moved. I wouldn't worry about it at all. These production boats do this and they have to because of the environment they are in. Submarines produced today are narrower in the ocean depths then at the surface. Would I reinforce it. Yep but I would do it in the natural state, as in, in the water not on dry dock. I did a Helms galley rebuild on dry dock and it was perfect, absolutely perfect. Put her in the water and by the end of the season the drawer wouldn't close right and the steps creaked.

Free boats can get very expensive when thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours are poured into them only to find down the road some no-go issue with the hull or keel that makes the boat junk or so far gone that repairs are not worth the effort once it is fixed. A surveyor could have spotted the issue before good money and time were poured into a boat that was destined for the chopper regardless.

We'll definitely haul the boat at some point and do a thorough inspection. I don't feel that there's anything that would make this boat a no-go at this point though. This can definitely happen from sitting on a cradle/boat stands for an extended period of time. What will happen is if sat on the hard for a long time and the aft end of the boat isn't properly supported either the keel can compress the hull and cause shifting of interior fiberglass or if the cradle/stand was putting too much pressure it that area it can also compress the hull and cause the same shifting of interior fiberglass. It is generally called Oil canning and if you do a google search for keel oil canning you will find some info on it.

Do not tear this boat apart. Simply fix the steps. You won’t go anywhere If you don’t leave. And you can’t leave if you r rebuilding everything. Endeavor made a good strong vessel. If you have some fiberglass tabbing in that area that needs reinforcing that should be reasonable to expect with the stepping loads there. Also tell that dude that bought your boat to leave those bulkheads alone. I am sure the structural integrity of the vessel relies on those bulkheads. I would suspect they are tied to the mast step.
