We just bought a boat! This is the first episode of our KZbin channel. We purchased a 1987 O'day 272 with a faulty engine.

Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. For this reason our channel is very DIY focused, with the goal to show anyone watching that a lot is possible if you're not afraid to make some mistakes along the way.
Please leave a like and comment if you've enjoyed the video, and subscribe if you haven't already.

Last week I found your videos on you tube and I liked them a lot, I just subscribed to get the news. I am from Buenos Aires Argentina, I understand a little English and although they both speak very fast I am learning with each video. Ten years ago I had a 26-foot sailboat similar to the slightly smaller sommium. At the moment I do not sail but I do not abandon the dream of doing it again, seeing you embodies you. Thank you, I give you data from here. For navigators who want to enter our waters, we have a good weather in general, you just have to worry about the windy winds that last one or two days of SE, are strong and persistent and drag you to the Argentine coast that is muddy. And on the other hand we have the wind pampero wind of the SW particularly violent and that drags you to the other shore Uruguay where the coast is of stone and sand. In both cases it is convenient to win windward as much as possible. In the estuary of the Rio de la Plata we have very little water and boats of more than 1.5 meters of draft have serious difficulties to navigate here. Sometimes they have greater draft must wait for high tide to enter the marinas. I translated the text with the google translator I hope it makes sense to my lines. Pablo Ferrari

So many lessons learned already, smiles, this is not a criticism by any means. The DIY attitude is great, and a way to save a lot, just remember somethings cost a lot because they require experts to work on them. It looks like you already know the difference. I would imagine that there are many definitions of a Boat. The one I am most familiar with applies to Boats as well as R.V. "A boat, or an R.V. is a hole in the water/air that the owners can constantly pour money into." Enjoy your adventure!

Robert, thank you so much! We appreciate the input. We will be showing a lot more with the coming videos. When this was filmed we still weren't 100% sure we were going to start a channel, so we didn't necessarily film as much as we should have. We've got a lot of work ahead of us, including replacing the the standing rigging (and beefing it up a little) so I'll be sure to chronicle all of that very well!

Our plans are to live on the boat when I am home and Jules will live in the apartment when I am at work, as I work away 3 weeks at a time. Nice video! Would have loved a little more detail on how you went up the mast, I need to make that trip soon myself. If it makes you feel better, we spent $300 on a survey and took our boat out for a sea trial. Ran great, sailed great. Fast forward a couple of weeks, got the key. Boat won't start .... I spent a couple of hours diagnosing that the lift pump failed. Paid someone to fix it since I wanted someone that knew what they were doing to give the engine a good once-over. We budgeted 40% because of the known issues and a little extra.... 40% wasn't even close. But good choice on replacing the motor :-) 100% of the purchase price and three months later, we are ready to finally put her in the water. It's amazing how all those trips to West Marine, Sailors Exchange, and Amazon.com add up. DIY has become my mantra. I know my Hunter 28 inside and out now, have even done a little fiberglass work on the rudder. I learned with the engine what it costs to pay someone to do it for me, and I hope to keep that to a minimum. My wife and I have the same initial plan as yours .. this is our starter boat. Once we outgrow her going up and down the coast, we'll upgrade. I have taken the first three ASA courses and learned a lot. My wife also took the first one. I would recommend them, or something similar if you haven't sailed much before. Regardless, spend time learning how to dock and undock, it's pretty darn easy to sail when there is nothing around you. If you ever get up to St. Augustine, drop us a line. We'll do the same....
@LearningtheLines
@LearningtheLines 8 жыл бұрын
John, thank you for watching and for the input. It's crazy how much things add up. We're definitely going to be doubling or maybe even tripling the purchase price of our boat with work to come. It's great to connect with others that have the same plan as us. I wanted to start this channel to chronicle an in-depth journey from buying our first boat to sailing the world. Not many other channels do that, and not many other channels do a good job at showing the "bad" side of sailing - when things go wrong. As far as climbing the mast goes, I wish we would have filmed it more in detail (we'll be doing a better job of this from here on out), but what I did first was replace the running rigging. That gave me the confidence to trust the halyards with my life. Then I bought a climbing harness. I didn't buy a bosun's chair because a decent climbing harness was cheaper than a decent bosun's chair. Then I ran the spinnaker halyard to the port jib sheet winch and had my friend crank me up the mast while I climbed. I used the main halyard as a safety line and had that running to the other winch. I've climbed 5 times now for various things. The next time I do it I'll go into more detail. If we make it up there we'll drop you a line for sure!

Just want to say thank u for sharing your experiences with the world. I can’t tell u how valuable this info is for a guy like me. Question... how much does a “survey” cost? I just bought a 34 foot Bristol sailboat (and have already spent the purchase price on upgrades with more to come) and happened upon your channel. I need new standing and running rigging, along with mast lights and a wind indicator. I'm contemplating unstepping the mast because I know I'll be up and down a thousand times on these projects. I see that you all started with your mast unstepped. Did you do any of your work while the mast was down and was it easier? Looking forward to seeing your DIY and getting inspiration and knowledge. Thanks!

OMG are you in for it.... but if you look at this as a stepping stone learning experience you will do fine... I hope. Saying I know there will be tough times and going thru those tough times are 2 different things, believe me I know. But make those mistakes now when the cost will be relatively low, for the future when those same costs can be astronomically high... Good luck!

Your O'Day is a nice coastal/inshore cruiser, but not a large or robust enough vessel for extended offshore cruising. You will need more in the way of stowage and tankage, and most of the fittings and fastenings would need beefing up, if indeed there was a solid enough structure to anchor them to. The minimal toerail on this boat concerns me - it would be too easy to slip on a canted deck and slide out under the lifelines. I would treat sailing and fitting this boat out as a classroom exercise ins sailing and cruising, but do seek advice as to techniques and boat/equipment choices before you embark on a world cruise!

I think the number one goal for prospective sailboat buyers and cruisers should be to find a boat that is known for its seaworthiness which would include such things as having a FULL KEEL which is part of the hull and not bolted on.. Cabin space and creature comforts would be way down on the list of priorities. Safety is first and foremost. Way too many boats are like giant bathtubs with tiny keels that are not part of the hull and can break off and capsize the boat.
@californiakayaker
@californiakayaker 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, saw one with a lead somewhat small keel and it had, added to it by the manufacturer, an addition to the 100% lead part of the keel a fiberglass addition. Seemed to be fairly tough and well attached via fiberglass and epoxy bonding to the lead keel but ? I do have the book "start with a hull, but which hulls would be best for blue water. A list is what I'm asking for. Oh, and this somnium keel, if lead (or not) , is half the size of the one I mentioned above. I've also seen aluminum boats with lead just dropped in the bilge, where it made holes in the boat via Galvanic Corrosion via INSIDE the hull, and might have even been added by some owner ? That said, there must be a list of "perfect" lol blue water boats ? Captain Larry ?
@californiakayaker
@californiakayaker 5 жыл бұрын
And, just read a reply by Somnium to Captain larry which included "Pearson 422 which is on the Mahina cruising list. " so sounds like Somnium is on the right page... ! Link to Mahina is here www.mahina.com/cruise.html Show less
@emilybh6255
@emilybh6255 5 жыл бұрын
@@californiakayaker It isn't the material of the keel that is important. It is how it is attached.Here is an article on keel failures every prospective sailboat owner should read.www.yachtingworld.com/news/keel-failure-shocking-facts-60006 Needless to say, if the keel is part of the hull as it is in full keel boats, this isn't an issue. This article doesn't go into keel designs much (maybe because a full or long keel is going to be cost prohibitive to most) but seems to have a good list of what to look for in other respects. I like that it talks about how some boats are heeled over on their topsides in the lightest breezes and have horrible steering. www.sailboat-cruising.com/offshore-sailboats.html How the boat handles in the water is KEY. Of course to a newbie who has never sailed before, without sailing on different boats to experience the differences in the way they handle, they won't know the difference unless they sail in different kinds of boat designs. Unfortunately there more articles in sailing magazines about "the most popular" blue water boats. that people should take with a grain of salt. There are a lot of inexperienced newbies buying those boats and prioritizing household appliances over handling ability as is talked about in this article which is going to impact the popularity and drive the more poorly designed production boats higher up lists like this. www.sailboat-cruising.com/cruising-sailboats.html I like that it at least says this: "And it’s an inescapable fact that when the sea gets up, heavier, narrow-beamed, deep-hulled offshore sailboats with longish overhangs will be more comfortable than beamy, flat-bottomed performance cruising sail boats." These would be the sleek full keel classicly designed sailboats like what the Herreshoffs designed.

When I do buy a boat, I'd just like it to be in a somewhat warm comfy location and a place with inexpensive parts and tax free . Then I could work on it for a couple years while enjoying the location . I'd rather buy one that needs a lot of hardware than pay a lot for old stuff.

Hey I just found your channel, not into boats really in fact I get seasick just getting on a dock. Although I love the idea of sailing around the world LOL But I was wondering can you show us how you or anyone climbs a mast? Are you on a rope chair? I saw some of the larger boats have a stainless ladder that goes up to the top.
@LearningtheLines
@LearningtheLines 6 жыл бұрын
I've got plans on sharing how I climb the mast soon. On the new boat it'll be a little different. There are various ways, but the most common is people using something called a "bosun's chair" and being hoisted up the mast via one of the lines on the mast. Typically people use either the main halyard or the spinnaker halyard. They run that line to a winch on one end and to the bosun's chair on the other. It requires a second person to actually crank the winch and lift the person up the mast. There are other methods, like steps on the mast that work as well.

Hi Guys, just found your vlog and now subscribe No 492. Any way that wood you put holes in to is called a fender board.

Sailing the world in an Oday? I think not. You'll change your mind the first time you see the phosphorus through the hull. Practice with this one and then get something a little more sturdy.

Water pump impellers are common issues, you also need to check for fishing line around the propeller shaft as this has a habit of chewing out the oil seal and then the gearbox fills up with water. Check the manual but the impeller is usually replaced every 3 years. Here is a video on how to do it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqmbkKuGaJWUibs this guy also has a video on checking the gearbox oil + seal. Change the gearbox oil, spark plug and fuel filter and you have pretty much done a service on the outboard (I'm asuming a 2 stroke).
@LearningtheLines
@LearningtheLines 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the information! I will certainly check it out. I took the old outboard (it was actually an older 4 stroke) to a Yamaha mechanic that a good friend of ours trusted and he told me to basically scrap the motor. It had so much corrosion throughout that fixing it would exceed the value of the outboard.

The boat that you show in the beginning shows a prop shaft and propeller? Why then do you have an outboard?
@LearningtheLines
@LearningtheLines 7 жыл бұрын
The inboard diesel that came with the boat in non-functioning. It's seized, missing an alternator, and missing a starter. We knew it was non-functional when we purchased the boat. We plan to remove it eventually and most likely put the fresh water tank or some other storage in it's place.

Problem wasn't the impeller. There was so much corrosion in the engine the mechanic said it was worthless. Would cost way more to refurbish than it was worth.

Maybe re watch this video before you think about buying the disaster you're thinking about. I don't know you at all but I'd still hate to see you get into trouble and ruin your overall dream. You also mentioned you looked at a ton of boats and then said the number was 10-15? Unless you think you can make a million off a KZbin series refurbishing that other 5k- 25k boat (lol, literally nothing is there but the shell. Up here in Boston they give those away to clear them out of yards). Anyway, there's lessons like your motor here and there's dream killers, ie: the 25k shell you could probably find for free somewhere with 100k worth of equipment missing.

With all due respect. There are 100's of young couples posting every detail of their learning experience, in what is fast becoming a parade of the blind leading the blind. I so wish the paradym were a few experienced crusiers fielding questions from the 100's of beginners.. and a lot less of this kind of self involved noise. Had you had good counsel you would have bought a different boat. Enjoy this one as a first boat, but don't lavish cruising gear money on it in excess.

I understand your opinion and I agree that there a lot of young couples (on KZbin) who are vlogging about their experiences sailing. Thing is though, this "self-involved noise" wouldn't exist if people didn't watch it... so by watching and commenting you're inadvertently promoting the same thing you're advocating against. That being said we've been very clear that this is our "learning boat" and not the one we plan on sailing the world on. One of our dream boat models is a Pearson 422 which is on the Mahina cruising list.

All types sailboats for all types of people. The type of boat you choose depends on what your doing with it. The O’Day 272 is a great coastal cruiser with more room than any other 27 footer I have looked at built in the 80’s.
