I did the ksuspension power upgrade on my XJ and I barely had to touch the key to get her to start. Makes the power windows work better too. Nice thing about it was that it took the fusible link out of the system and replaces it with a mega fuse available at any parts store. On my 5.2 ZJ I did the same thing, only I got a 160 amp Durango alternator from my local U pull, not because I need it (yet) but because why why not? Also, before I did the power upgrade on my ZJ I had a power window that didn't work. After I put it on, it started to work.

It took me waaaay too long to find a vid that had a simple "what to cut and put back together" layout. Taking a '94 XJ 90 Amp and going to a 180 amp aftermarket Durango alt. Gotta do some grinding to make it fit, but now I know the wiring... I'm all in. My head has finally quit hurting about this. The dead wire snips and using wire strippers for crimpers was worth the price of admission. My shade tree heroes.
@hotshtsr206 жыл бұрын
Nice job guys. Good info. One thing to note: crimp connectors are actually the correct way to do it, just with better quality ones that you can visually inspect (non insulated) prior to shrink tubing. The stock harness on any modern car has nary a solder joint on it for a reason: solder + vibration + heat = failure. So, your laziness in getting the iron paid off. Congrats. :)
@DEInTheGarage6 жыл бұрын
Boy do I love it when laziness pays off! could you suggest some quality butt connectors that we could use for applications like this? Thanks for the feedback and advice!
@hotshtsr206 жыл бұрын
D&E In The Garage no kidding. :) Best ones are a matched set (connector and crimper only work together). Otherwise, most non insulated work well. I crimp right on the seam with the wire centered so the connector curls and splits/grabs the wire

Hey guys. You could have used one of those cold heat cordless solding pens on this job. You can get one for about $20. I now have my second one and they work like a charm. I found out the hard way NOT to leave a piece of solder sticking between the two contact probes because the next time you use it, there's a chance you'll burn out the elements inside the pen. At least I think that's what caused my first one to stop working. Anyhow, one of those would have been perfect for soldering those connectors to the "new" alternator on this project. The cold heat soldering pens / irons produce instant heat at the point of contact and I mean INSTANT heat that will melt the solder in about 2 seconds.....literally.

Dang, that sounds pretty cool. I will be honest with you, I am not certain what implications such a heavy system would have. My initial thought is that it should be ok as the 250 amp is what is possible, not what it pushes all the time... That said, I am not sure what other parts of the system might be affected. So i was able to confirm that for most years the 2.5 and the 4.0 shared the same alternator. That SHOULD be that this swap will work for your 2.5 the exact same way it worked for our 4.0. I cannot find any information that would disagree with that. if you decide to go for it, I would be really interested to hear about your experience.

everything i find is an 117, 136 or 160 amp do you have a part number

E from the D&E in the Garage the original part number I was looking for was a Denso 56029. That is the 160amp alternator but it was very hard to find in decent condition. So I started looking for any 5.2l dodge with the “bunny ears mounts” that had a new afternarket one and googled the part number to see which amp it was. That’s how I found the 130amp.

5.2 grand is soooo much easier to get to the alternator.
