35 Minutes Long Seal Rescue

Gill nets are illegal in Namibia, but we still find seals entangled in them. This net was in good condition and must have been used recently. Fishermen are well aware of the laws regarding the usage of specific fishing equipment. However, they continue to break the law. Without strict enforcement, those responsible will continue to walk free. This poor animal had to suffer through 35 minutes of being pinned to the ground and having people poke into her skin to pull out the thin lines. No animal deserves to go through such an experience. This has to STOP!

Wow! That was quite a rescue! She wouldn’t have lasted long tangled up like that. The way she opened her mouth wide when you released the net from her mouth was just wonderful to see. Thank you!

Her reaction when Naude cut the lines going in and around her mouth said it all. Her fate was sealed if the team had not spotted her and managed to cut all that awful gill net off her. Outstanding rescue. Thank you OCN!

Just imagine, wrapping the sailors and all those responsible for this and so many other seals’ nettings into this same netting and telling them: ok now you work and feed yourself and your family. What an intense rescue. I always get worried when you have those instruments close to the eye. The seals just don't cooperate. They don't know you're trying to help. But you guys did a great job!

Oui c'est bien ça au moins 35 minutes d'actes chururgicaux, de concertation, rien n'est laissé au hasard pour parvenir à délivrer cette belle créature de ce piege immonde. La victime participait comme le dit Tony au début du sauvetage. Ça fait vraiment de la peine de voir un de ses yeux atteint par ce filet, on voyait qu'elle suivait l'opération.
