The one in my safe is a Jensen barrel, a Mauser 98 action, a Timney trigger, laminate stock and a 2-8X Leupold. Like your final product, it is gorgeous and a shooter. With Varget powder it clusters 200 grain Hornady interlocks, 2650 fps. It is set up for white tails but the hunting area is in Grizzly country so the extra whack is comforting. Brilliant video, well done sir!

That last 15 min. of hunting light is where it really shines. You’ll be gutting in the dark but not tracking. Awesome rifle build DD. You have a awesome looking and shooting rifle made to your spec. For around $1000. It’ll give you a sense of pride and satisfaction every time you hunt with it. I built a 35 Brown Whelen some years back on a 1917 Enfield action. I have the same contour barrel with a long straight section ahead of the action as you , and my gun is about as heavy as yours. Back then most barrel makers were selling contoured blanks for around a hundred dollars, I used a Shilen. I'm a machinist so I did my own threading and chambering. I live in California too so I need to get it tuned around a 225gr Barnes copper bullet.

DD, those are impressive ballistics with a 225 grain bullet, I have to say. I bought one of the Remington model 700 Classics in .35 Whelen when they brought it out back in the 80s, that was a one hole wonder with their round nose .250 grainers. It would take your hat off with every shot though, ouch. Sot a couple deer with it but mostly let it sit in the safe. Since that time I have converted to a 338-06 aficionado, which for those who don’t know is a .33 Whelen this gives me everything the .35 does with a much larger bullet choice and better ballistics. 180s for deer size game and as much as 300 grainers for bigger stuff also this one I built on 98 mauser action with a cheap midway barrel and will group 5 at 100 yards into a 1.25 inch group regularly something to think about. Most excellent video Mr. Dog. Thanks……..
@desertdogoutdoors1113 Жыл бұрын
The 338-06 is an inferior round compared to the 35 Whelen. The BC advantage of the 338-06 doesn't matter at ethical hunting distances because the Whelen will have 100-200fps more velocity across all bullet weights. (the Whelen shoots flatter within the MPBR). So the Whelen shoots flatter and hits harder, with the same powder charge. The Whelen also has much better brass and ammo availability.

My first .35 Whelen was a disappointment. The 2nd round fired through it had a head separation. The rifle was a CVA Scout break action single shot and once I returned it to CVA they affirmed what my gunsmith said. To much headspace. CVA didn't have another one to send me but that's a different story. I went and bought a Lipsey's Ruger #1 in 35 Whelen. At this point I mainly use Sierra 225 gr. gameking bullets and 4064 powder. I do not load to maximum and my average velocity with my load is 2816 fps. This is the most efficient rifle I have ever loaded for. I bought a short chambered Green Mountain barrel for less than $100, paid my smith to finish the tenon and chamber and cerakote the barreled action for $200. I got a pull off Bishop stock from my dad for nothing and refinished it, bought a set of Talley rings and mounted a Leupold VXII 3-9 I already owned. All in less than $400 and it shoots lights out. I am trying to decide which twist between the two as I am having my rifle rebarreled. I also notice according to Berger twist rate stability calculator that 14 twist is right on the line on securely stabilizing accubond 225 grain bullets. I hunt at sea level in Alaska and am concerned it won't stabilize the accubond 225 grain bullet sufficiently as that is the bullet I plan to use most. I know this video is a couple of years old but, I hope you will still respond to my question. Your videos are very informative. Thank you.

I like your build DD! I built mine long ago and chose a techo-retro build. I used a nickle steel 1903 Springfield action as the starting point of my Whelen. My question to you would be if you think the .338-06 might be a better cartridge for a reloader than the old classic? I have used both and like them very much, to the point that I would not feel at a disadvantage with either. That said I think the .338" has a better selection of accurate bullets available (if you can buy them that is...). Your thoughts?

The 35 has more velocity for a given bullet weight than the 338-06, so shoots flatter within 350 yards. The 35 also has more frontal diameter than the 33, which seems to thump a little harder. The Whelen has much better factory brass availability than 338-06, and a good selection of commercial ammo. The Whelen also has a bigger "cool factor" IMO. The 35 Whelen is the most efficient cartridge I have ever used (performance vs. grains of powder) and is the pinnacle of what can be achieved from the 30-06 case. Bullet selection is also not limited like many think. You can shoot Partitions, Accubonds, TTSX's, TSX's, Interlocks, GMX, FTX, Gamekings, Speers, A-Frames, Pro Hunters, Oryx, Wooleighs, and more with the 35 Whelen. And as a bonus, the Whelen is a perfect cartridge to use with cast bullets.

I like this video. Did you shoot this particular rifle before the rebarrel? Did you consider getting it rebored instead? I imagine the stock profile didn't match your desires, but I'm curious. I've been looking forward to a proper overview of the .35 Whelen for some time. Personally, I don't give a damn about other people coming out with videos first. I value your information specifically because you have experience with the cartridge, the AI variant, and several rifles thus chambered. That, and your general style is fairly unique. With that in mind, I hope you reconsider releasing the full .35 Whelen video in the future. If not, perhaps you could salvage it into a bigger, broader, general comparison of medium bores, something like your 7mm video? If not, I understand. Keep up the good work. Best wishes.

A large number of re-bores in 35 whelen with sporter or light profile barrels end up having very thin bore walls after the re-bore. I like the #4 Douglas profile for my Whelen builds, because it maintains the wall thickness of a sporter barrel when bored in 358. Plus, it's only a couple hundred dollars more to get a brand new match-grade barrel vs a rebore.

As I thought. To be clear, the thin walls wouldn't be dangerous, but would contribute to less accuracy with repeat shots due to the barrel heating up too fast. Is that your reasoning? I asked primarily because I very seriously thought about getting a new Model 70 Alaskan in .30-06 rebored to .35 Whelen or 9.3x62. I'm sure it'd balance like a pig on a shovel but I'm more concerned about muzzle blast, frankly.

Fantastic video! Desert Dog do you have an idea of your velocities with the loads in the video?
