I'm a life long Eagles fan, but I have to admit, the 49ers of the 1980's were the best. Montana, Rice and company were unstoppable!

That fog bowl may have robbed the Eagles and Cunningham of a spot in this game. Not that the 49ers would lose, this was the year after Anthony Carter and the Vikings upset the 49ers in the divisional playoffs, they were on a mission and were loaded. I believe they struggled early this year coming off that playoff loss, Montana/Young was big going into the season, but when they settled down they were awesome. Better than their record for sure. The year prior, I think they only lost one game, maybe two, so the Vikings knocking them off was insane and if it didn’t happen who knows how it goes. It could’ve been a Super Bowl against the Broncos in 87, this season against the Bengals, then again against the Broncos when they blew them out, and the next season losing a close one to the Giants in San Francisco after Montana was mauled by Leonard Marshall. The 49ers beat the Giants on MNF earlier that year 7-0, if Montana stays in the 90 NFC championship the 49ers could’ve won meaning they could’ve had a legit shot at four Super Bowls in a row and possibly winning all four. The Vikings and Giants weren’t having it tho.. I was an eastern Pennsylvanian 49ers fan but I had a soft spot for Cunningham, even more so when he was with the Vikings. Also I’m jealous of the Eagles getting Cooper Dejean in the draft, I wanted the 49ers to get him

As a 8 year old this made me 49ers fan forever because of Jerry Rice. But That Bears 1984-88 era should have had at least two more Super Bowls. They were my older brother and dad squad because they loved Walter Payton.

Remember this like it was yesterday I was 13 sealed Montana and the 49ers on way team of the 80s. No insult on Brady what he did in his career is amazing but the 49ers of the 80s were in a stacked NFC the Redskins, Bears and Giants were all great teams also the Eagles and Rams had solid teams that didn't get to Super Bowl. The way those 49ers teams consistently stood above those other powerhouse teams is a tribute to how good they were. Unless another QB comes along proves me wrong Montana most clutch playoff QB all time

That was their best shot for the Bears and it was the beginning of the end for Mike Dikta. The 49ers were just the better team that got hot at the right time after their 6-5 debacle. They put it together and for the Bears their luck ran out. They just didn't have any consistent QB play and their defense held the team together. It was Jim McMahon's last game as a Bear and even then he didn't play much the week before. For the 49ers, their run would continue for another 2 years until the Giants knocked them off that perch.
@mattmelchiorre479010 ай бұрын
I remember all of this well the 49ers stood above all those other power house teams. NFC was very strong in the 80s to mid 90s
@effend4463 ай бұрын
Actually, 1987 was the beginning of the end for Mike Ditka. Especially when the players went on strike. Adding insult to injury, Ditka called his replacement players “The Real Bears” which obviously did not sit well with the regulars. Even worse, Ditka and Mike McKaskey were never truly on the same page to begin with. Remember, McKaskey did not hire Ditka in the first place. The Late Great George Halas did.

It was pretty close to as good a game a team could play in a championship game. The 49ers, west-coasters on the road in frigid Chicago, a touchdown put up on the board in each of the four quarters, and no turnovers or penalties committed!

For all of their great wins in the 80's for the Niners, this was their best win. They went into a cold Chicago and beat the stuffing out of the Bears on their field, with their weather, with their fans and showed how great they were. Bill Walsh to me is the greatest coach of all time, as he took a LOT of small college players and turned them into great players like no other. Also, calling the Niners a finesse team was the biggest JOKE of all time as well. Ironically, this was Joe Montana's only road win in the playoffs (despite being the greatest regular season road QB ever) for the Niners. He did beat Houston in the dome in 93 as a Chief for his other road playoff win.

I was a 14 year old Bear's fan in Chicago. A brutal, depressing loss. We were never in it. This was the official end of the Bears as a force in the NFC. Well and truly beaten by the 49ers. To be honest, the 49ers had a lot more talent at the skill positions. Montana, Rice, Taylor, Craig, Rathman......compare that to the Bears: An injury-plagued McMahon, McKinnon, Anderson, Morris. No contest.

@jamescook41166 ай бұрын
@@scottdavidson9963 On paper, yes. Really underachieved in the playoofs. They had great regular seasons from 84-88. Just undone by the fact that McMahon could not stay healthy and truly mediocre backup QBs. We didn't have Steve Young coming in after Joe Montana ;)

@@jamescook4116 I’m a die hard Bears fan and I remember this game but the 49ers were just a superior team and superior organization. The myth of “Bear Weather” died on this day. Like you said, the Bears were never Super Bowl contenders for a long time after this.

The vikikgs swept the Bears in 1988. Huwever,the vikings were swept by a 4-win packer team. If the vikings had beat the packers one time,they woulg have had home field throughout the nfc playoffs.
