@@michaelk8710 I prefer the Frank records. The SONGS! On albums like “Eye of the Beholder”, “Inside Out”, and especially “Beneath The Mask”, they wrote POP SONGS, played by virtuosic jazzers! What?! I believe Frank will always be the best when it comes to sweep picking because he developed his technique in the area as a result of chasing a specific sound as opposed to mindlessly sweeping arpeggios up and down the neck like so many shredders do. Whereas Yngwie developed his sweep picking to emulate violinists, Frank was inspired by the great saxophonists. As a result, his phrasing is every bit as good as his picking is.

I wrote him off for so long for the dumbest reasons lol. People always praised his work as a soloist so I had this image of a super-Strat wielding guy, but I always saw him in magazine ads and articles with big goofy hollowbody signature guitars and that silly trilby hat over the years. Little did I realize he is one of the best guitar players out there. His material spans decades and if one wants a master class on phrasing and melody, he's one of my favorites.

@nickelcreed4421

I would actually agree with this if it wasn't for the fact he had modern learning resources. Yeah its super clean, but compare that to Becker who actually wrote Serrena when he was 17 in pre internet days. Also Richardsons music is pretty bad, hes like those instagram guitarists who think shredding over lame drop tuned riffs is the pinnacle of music (think berried alive, its terrible). It's just my opinion, dont take this as fact.

@negativexmilitia1

I always wondered the same myself, and great improvisers "just" have a large large catalogue of different licks, and they know how to play them in different keys and connect them. I always used to think all those "learn these licks" articles in magazines I read were silly. I'd say, no, I just want to improvise for real, make it up as I go. Well there is some of that but over the years I've come to learn it's just years and years of learning different little licks, making up or own, and practicing improvising. For example, what someone like Stevie Ray Vaughn improvise, and short of getting flamed for saying his solos sound the same, his licks are so distinct once you listen to him a lot you realize they are built of different peices that are arranged in different ways. This was super long, but hopefully you get the point?
@negativexmilitia1
@negativexmilitia1 2 жыл бұрын
I think improvising is similar to being a great fighter as in you know a lot of moves, have a signature style, and know which punches or blocks to use based on what your opponent throws at you. Whichs riffs and licks are you going to play based on what the rythm section is doing? And you could base that off it as a whole, or one particular instrument. That's when you start to get into the odder sounding jazz stuff.

You did great with the title to get the shred folks riled up. Most purely rock/metal shred folks can't appreciate the musical sophistication - he's playing improvised economy picking lines, responding to the players around him and not pre-composed sweep patterns that most of the metal guys mostly play.

Guthrie does this kinda stuff, and to my ear it sounds more musical. While your looking at fusion players who are all incredible btw on a wee aside but they really are all immense musicians. You’ve got to look at Holdsworth stuff too who always seems just that bit more spectacular than your average incredible out of this world guitar player. All these guys tho are genuinely incredible and its always a listener preference thing than a one better than the other guitar player thing cause they are all possessed with incredible and immaculate technique

Nice to see this picking up a bit, but guys, PLEASE... stop embarrassing yourself by feeling that this title is an attack on your favourite player. As much as I enjoy laughing at them, no, Jason Becker, Guthrie Govan, Jason Richardson, Synyster Gates, John Petrucci, Malmsteen, Shawn Lane (didn't really sweep), Matteo Mancuso (literally doesn't sweep), Tony Macalpine, Steve Vai, Polyphia etc... aren't even CLOSE to this. All comments like that show is that you didn't come here to enjoy learning about something new, you just wanted to assert your taste. Really seriously now, listen to what Frank is doing here at 1:08 or 1:34 or 1:58 or 2:11 or 2:19 or 2:29. Really listen. Look at the tab. Then come back and tell me how your hero is better. Spoilers, Frank isn't my hero. He's a tremendous player, and as students of the guitar, to not be able to acknowledge and respect that is worrying. I don't play anything like this. I also don't want to... but come on... to put this on the same page as DRAGONFORCE makes you look beyond stupid.

It's wonderful if you believe he's the best or amazing. Cool, but let's not confuse complex with good music. I'll take an emotional sloppy Slash solo any day of the week over this. First “guest” performer when I was at GIT/AIM (1988-89) was Gambale. He was giving a seminar at a music store. My biggest memory was as I tried to get a better view I stepped on the audio “snake” and it made a loud pop in the PA. In my defense, a duct taped cable snake shouldn’t do that 🤷‍♂️. Still an AWESOME performance. Believe he was playing that same yellow Ibanez. He had a lot of midi backing tracks going but still had a bass & drummer. Also Vinny Moore, Scott Henderson & many west coast GIT monsters gave seminars @ the actual school. Biggest deal for me was Jimmy Herring was my daily 1 on 1 instructor. Whirlwind year! Broke 22 year old, commuting from 13th & Peachtree in a 67 VW, working when I could at the Atl Symphony. Most exhausting yet rewarding time !
