Would change iPad to mini 5 as A12 is far more powerful and it fits the theme of tiny devices. 12-inch MacBook, try for the I5 with 16 GB RAM if possible. Longevity comes with better performance, and that's concerning just how long you'll hang onto said MacBook.

At the present pace, Apple devices will start losing functionality in a serious way when they're roughly 3-4 generations behind in terms of the Os. Until then, even if you're 1-3 generations behind the device should still be perfectly usable in regard to apps and programs functioning properly.

Pro tip: Install opencore on that MacBook and install the Feature Unlock kext and apply the appropriate boot arg and you can get sidecar on that iPad All this does is remove the flag that restricts your ability to share the screen. Mac OS just has a list of supported sidecar devices and shows the display as available if it matches that list. Feature unlock will allow you to just see the iPad. This works for universal control as well. Word of warning: iPads are generally fine as displays, but if your Mac doesn’t support screen sharing in that way, it is for good reason. My Late 2014 27” struggles when sharing to this same model iPad. The Late 2015 27” handles it like a champ. Universal control is generally fine on either though.

If you really come to think of it, this is ridiculously cheap to get supported gear, maybe not very long but it will get a college student going. Plus the new OCLP will be able to support the latest OS. Of course 8Gb is not a lot of memory, but hey they still sell their new M1/M2 with it. What it boils down to is: How recent do you need your system to be (specifically need, not want).

The difference with M1 is that it has high performance swap capabilities which uses the SSD as a cache to effectively increase the amount of ram it has so it technically has 8 gigs of fast ram and however many gigs of slower ram.

I found a 12 inch MacBook in a recycling cart at my summer job at my local university. My job was to inventory all the computers that came into the office. They were all destined to be scrap (mostly iMacs and Dell PC's) and my supervisor told me if I saw anything I wanted to simply secure erase it and let them know and they'd remove the MDM and I could have it. Funny thing is the MacBook had a sticky note on it saying "Kaput" which for the uninitiated basically means dead. Also it apparently was part of a science lab but anyway imagine my surprise when I plugged it in and it booted right up into El Capitan. Immediately I asked my supervisor and he gave me the greenlight to erase it and give him the serial number to remove it from remote management. It was surprisingly specced out to with the BTO 1.3 Ghz Core m7, 8gb ram and a 512gb ssd. Still quite slow, but for free I ain't gonna complain

hypothetically, buying the cheapest hardware that supports the latest software means that it is at the bottom of the list for the next round of future software version updates and support. paying more than the bottom rung theoretically buys you more time for further support and updates. edit: 3g is being discontinued in certain cellphone markets. cell carrier support phase-out is another reason to not buy an older 3g phone that does not support 4g lte. the same pattern will happen with 4g moving towards 5g. you’re paying for the useful life of the product per dollar that a cheap cost in these products may not actually save you money over time. while this appears appealing at first, the better options per dollar are usually in the mid-range area or even refurbished but at bargain deals.

When you say you can get a potato for the cost of a 2017 MacBook, it makes me think some of us might be overpaying for our potatoes. It would be cool to explore the market and see if you can find some more affordable, frequently overlooked options, even if it’s not spec-for-spud identical to the latest models.

I got a 5th gen IPad to replace my ipad 2 off eBay for $80 (128gb space gray) and honestly it’s very good. Maybe our 2 devices are different but mine handles pretty much everything smoothly. When doing basic tasks it isn’t far behind a 9th gen like what my mom uses. Maybe not as quick as a newer iPad but it runs consistently, and lag/hang ups are very rare. Even when playing a big 3D (WOT Blitz) game it still handles it fantastically, my brother who has a M1 pro said that when he played on my iPad he didn’t even notice a huge difference between our 2 when in game. So while it may not be the newest i’m sure it runs far better than any other similarly priced tablet from 2017 would today.

The Macbook from 2017 can't even run a Zoom call with blurred background. All those items are slow and at the end of their software support lifecicle. I've sold my iPhone XR (3 years old) 8 months ago because it was already becoming slow and it's battery was at 91%, my wife's XR (3 months newer than mine) battery was at 88%. iPhone 8 is a no go, unless you don't have money to purchase a normal device. I'd buy it only if I'm collecting old items.

My best guess as to why Apple stopped support for the 2017 MacBook Air is because it was just the 2015 model, with a slightly overclocked 5th Gen Core i5. While the 2017 MacBook is using a 7th Gen Intel CPU.

In Europe, you will never get one of those Macs for that price You'll easily pay twice as much. However, the iPhone 8 won't cost much more than mentioned here on eBay, and it's by far the most decent device of the lot, keeping up with the times fairly well. If not for the under 2000 mAh battery, I'd be buying one tomorrow. The other two, well, they definitely feel long in the tooth unless you conceive the Mac as a netbook. And that would be a pretty netbook to have for 150, even if just to browse the web and write documents... but you'll pay so much much more for one of those round here...

what’s interesting is if you u do the math - we’re talking $30/mon for a year. the “latest & greatest” might cost you $2500 which you’d have to keep around for 6.9 years just to breakeven. 10.4 years if you stretch the trio to 18 months and 13.9 yrs if u hyper-stretch the trio to 2 years! for the record, i did manage to stretch a 2007 MacBook to 13 yrs but wow was it on its last legs! let’s not talk about how quickly the 1st gen 2010 iPad got retired…just glad I replaced both w a 2018 iPadPro in 2020 :)

I don’t see the need for an iPad if you have a MacBook honestly. Especially not a budget iPad The 12 inch MacBook you can still make a case for now but not some old iPad. I love my 12inch and I’m holding on to it for as long as I can. Still works perfectly

I continue to value your perspective on the Fruit company. You manage to be different from the mouth-breather Fruit Flies that constantly speculate on the up and coming products (and are wrong). You manage to make a real world approach on using Fruit products. As someone who owns several Fruit products (a mirror door G4 tower and 2, 2012 macbook pros that I use to learn Fruit OS), I value some things about Fruit and am often baffled at what passes as upgrades (or excuses to launch something new). I don't need to commit to an ecosystem as my Windows machines play well with my Android phone and I can make and receive calls from my Windows laptops and its hands free with a comfortable headphone. And since my windows laptops are touch screen capable, I don't need a tablet (one of my windows laptops folds to form a tablet like environment and is the size of a macbook air and just as light). Keep up the great job and thank you for being different. Your perspectives on Fruit products is valuable and believable. You are a breath of fresh air in a youtube world filled with bloviating Fruitsters who are the worst kind of fanbois!

You said it yourself. "5 year old iPhone 8." It's at the end of its update lifespan. The SE3 is a great phone if you want the classic iPhone experience but also want to have security and software updates for as long as the iPhone 13. Of course the SE is a better option if you're gonna use your phone for more than a year or two. I traded in a RAZR 5g for mine at best buy and got it for 10 bucks. I always keep all my phones because sometimes there are odd trade in deals companies do with specific devices that you can take advantage of. I bought the RAZR 5g in mint condition for $350, traded it at best buy for $420 almost a year later, and walked out with a previous year iPhone for 10 bucks. I have an iPhone 7 somewhere, but security updates are very important to me because I use my phone to process nearly all of my payments. Don't use phones that don't get security updates if you store even one debit card on them

2017 MacBook is slow, yet it costed a lot when it was released for me… I got back in 2017 an ASUS pc for 400€ and used it until 3 months ago. It was a scam because the processor is a really old one and from 2 years ago the processor’s rank in benchmark was 2500+… So yeah 2017 MacBook is still ok nowadays

My only gripe…. You never include the price of the chargers and cables that were obviously missing from the packages you received. I applaud the fact that you could find a system that is a great starter for a newbie to the ecosystem. But that newbie isn’t going to have chargers and cables lying around. Granted, some chargers are not that expensive. But you add up all 3 plus cables and you can easily add on another $100.

I’d say all in it was $2,000 or so but it’s lasting me for a decade and it’s all luxury in a way PCs never gave me. And end of 2021 when I got the MacBook it was kinda dumb to buy anything else.
