I got back into Apple a long while ago through the iPhone SE and went from there, adding the laptop, watch, Apple TV and more from there. It’s like you said. Start cheap and then you can get more expensive with it over time and replace some of this stuff with better things in the line up. Some of this stuff was already provided too like from my cable provider.

I got iPhone 5s in 2018 on eBay for like 40$ I had very little money and I thought be better than one of android phones they sell in the grocery store, and I was actually pretty impressed and it was leagues better. i got iPhone SE 2016 shortly after for 90$ on eBay and it was way better, around the same time I got mid 2010 MacBook Pro for 120$ and I’m currently using it 2023 for all my trade school course work and this year I bought the iPhone SE 3 128gb model in nearly flawless condition for 200$ and it’s the nicest phone I’ve ever owned. in general tech has improved and the sheer abundance of it makes buying it second hand more affordable, but I feel that’s especially true for apple at least in the most recent years, simply because there are just so many Americans buying and reselling apple tech it drives the price down, so I really do think at least in the past few years and moving forward it actually makes more sense for low income Americans to buy second hand apple than new android, to each is there own though whatever works for you, I certainly know someday I do intend when I have more money I will buy brand new iPhone, so it’s obvious they got there claws in me. All part of there evil plan lol

I found your point about iPads rather surprising. I’ve had my iPad Air M1 for about 3 months now, and I tend to use it for about 2-3 hours a day still. Sure, that’s mostly to put KZbin on a big screen during meals, and I probably use it for anything else for maybe an hour a day, but it’s still something I use consistently. It’s so much better at basically everything other than fitting in a pocket, that it’s my go-to device if I have it with me. And about the “premium” for being the first person to own a device - I don’t entirely agree. Yes, a refurbished iPhone XR can be found for as little as $172 from a few seconds of scrolling on Back Market, and that’s a solid deal - but a new iPhone 14 with 256gb of storage for $900 can easily last you for five years without needing repairs or a battery replacement, or at least I assume so from my iPhone XR that’s lasted me for approaching 5 years now. You pay a good bit more overall, but you also have the *best* phone for one year in five and you’ve moved onto the next one before the last one starts feeling annoyingly dated. And, yes, you also get the benefits that come with being the first owner. Still, if I had to buy a new iPhone right now because my XR suddenly broke, it’d be the iPhone 12. Perfectly good to go on for another 3-4 years, for under half the price I’d pay for a 256gb iPhone 14.

The problem with Apple is getting locked to their software ecosystem, not the price at any particular point in time. Even if they offer good products now, will they still do so in 10 years? My tips: Wait for deals, sales and special offers with mobile carriers. Buy the best iPhone and iPad/MacBook you can reasonably afford; this is the hub of your ecosystem, if you have to finance anything, this is where your money should go. Get the SE versions of the Apple watch or an older supported version unless you can justify the price for the latest flagship watch. Can someone explain to me how y'all can survive in the Apple ecosystem? I just find it so limiting. I want to be in it so bad, but when I tried, I felt so stressed by the lack of things I consider basic functions. For example, I have Apple Music and I wanted to login on my friend's iPad because my phone was dead, but you can't just switch accounts. It's so easy to do that on Spotify and any of the Google apps. Also, not being able to access USBs on the go. As a college student, sometimes I found it easier to transfer huge files via USB than through email or cloud service, especially when the professor is older and doesn't really know their way around the school portal.

I bought an iPhone 12 refurbished at the beginning of this yearfor $630 and came with 100% battery health and the phone was like new condition. Again why pay the extra to be the first owner?

If you really think that the argument "you can have apple products for a good price, you only need to buy 5 years old, refurbished products!" is a good argument, you are insane.

Most Apple users have 5 year old products anyway

My 2 pence-Apple Certified Refurbished is the only way to go. You can get some great deals and you don’t have to compromise on quality one bit. Amazon I don’t trust to sell me a good refurb.

It’s definitely not necessary to spend a fortune to be in Apple’s ecosystem and leaning into the durability and updatability of the key items is one way of keeping your spend down. I have iPhone XR, Apple Watch Series 2 and a 2018 iPad Pro from Amazon Renewed. I disagree with Drew about the iPad. It’s a perfect device for home use unless you need to do serious productive or work stuff. I watch nearly all my KZbin on mine. Otherwise I have 3 very affordable HomePod Minis and several AirTags. Otherwise I go third party for stuff like cables and Watch bands and Chinese clone for AirPods Pro and Apple Pencil 2. Both trick iOS into thinking they are legit and have the majority of the functionality of the genuine items at a fraction of the price. For light and occasional usage why pay more?

I got my iphone 12 for a good price, my ipod touch was a birthday gift, I initially had an ipad mini 4 for uni but traded that in for a pretty good discount on an ipad 8th gen, I just treated myself to airpod 3s because my first airpods died ages ago and I held off on replacing them for so long, and recently I got a refurbished macbook air m1. I'm looking into getting an apple watch se at some point but I keep not doing it lol, my sister used to have an apple watch ages ago and she didn't like it but I think hers was the 2 or 3, it was a much older one but I've never had a smart watch before so I'm hesitant about it lol. I just like apple a lot, I'm not even sure how it happened haha
