Bringing back some memories, back in the early 80's my older brother had a 71 BOSS 351 4 speed....the original Boss Motor was gone, but had a strong 351 Cleveland 4 barrel and the rest of the car was all original...Top loader 4 speed, 3.90 Posi...even without the BOSS engine it was damned quick, kept up with all of the 442's and Trans Am's of the day, what a blast she was.

If you put a mechanical cam into a 4v with adjustable valvetrain its very close to the same as a boss (pistons and damper were different too but that's fairly minimal performance wise)

Almost brought tears to my eyes. I had a built Cleveland in my mustang looked almost like your car the 80's when I was in my early 20's. 12.5 -1 pistons, .650 lift cam, crane aluminum roller lifters, block and heads "o" ringed , head and main bearing studs, holley strip dominator intake and sooo much more...... I really regret having to sell car. I miss it.

Sounds like a wild ride; a Cleveland built like that in the 80's would probably outrun almost anything on the streets. If I ever come across a strip dominator for a good price I'll probably jump on it.

@@troyberg65 I converted my Cleveland to adjustable rockers with a kit from Edelbrock. It featured a stud with a three eight bottom with a seven sixteenth top. No machining of the head was necessary, but my crane cam was a sreet-bracket-racing grind so that might have made a difference. The setup allowed me to use big-block Chevy rockers, and I was quite happy with the results.

@@jeromebreeding3302 yea those kits are a great way to go to an adjustable valvetrain on a budget. If I was going a bit less aggressive on the cam I would have went that way. I did get a good deal on the machine work for my pedastles too tho. Be sure to check geometry on the BBC rockers the geometry is a little bit different the the ford ones. I have comp roller tip rockers in it currently but some crane pro golds to go in for the next version I have planned.

One of my friend's dads had a Torino with a 351 Cleveland circa 1974. I've a 1970 F-100 Sport Custom truck, my high-school hotrod. I outran Cameros and Corvettes with that machine. It had a 351c 4bbl engine with a hot cam, and a very wrong work transmission. After 4000 rpm, it was like driving a WWII fighter plane. The startup is very familiar. Heh, I went through seven starters and three batteries in 5 years. It's sitting at my mom's house waiting for restoration. I think the last time I ran it, it was something like 12:1. With the new pistons, I expect I'll be stuck with racing fuel. When it idled, I was lucky at something north of 1100, even then, it struggled. What a great sound. Mine was deep-throated, yours seems somewhat tinny. I'm not sure why the difference, aren't you working on an exhaust system? Mine was very simple. Anyway, what a very pretty engine. When tuned to make power, it barely runs. It sounds great, it runs great, it behaves terribly. I want three (one in a DeTamaso Pantera, if you please).
@troyberg65
@troyberg65 3 жыл бұрын
At the time of this video I had the exhaust off changing it up from straight dual 3" with Hooker Maxflow mufflers to 3" mandrel with an X pipe and the same mufflers; It was idling a bit high in this video and my phones microphone didn't quite reproduce the sound completely accurately. Extra compression really does add throatiness to the tone though; at this time it still runs stock cast flat tops; but it sings at 7000 rpm and is completely aggressive with the 3800rpm converter. It launches as hard as my 2013 SHO with about 480hp, 500ft lbs of torque and AWD. And it's only about .02 slower in the quarter mile. On a stock bottom end. In the works is a 393 for it at around 10.8:1....... Would also love one in a pantera

Hey mate sorry just got a f truck with a 351 stock with extractors. What did u do to it to get it to this point ? And how much total$ thanks heaps
@troyberg65
@troyberg65 3 жыл бұрын
This engine came with 4v open chamber heads, I came across some 4v Closed chamber heads to up the compression for $400, had the pedastles milled for an adjustable valve train for another $300, got this solid flat tappet cam $250, Crower coolface lifters $125, I scored my comp roller tip rockers for $10 locally but they're typically $200. The rotating assembly is bone stock but I went through it and checked everything out and installed a oil restrictor kit. Intake is a Torker single plane and headers are Hooker longtubes. I scored the short block for $750 and got the intake for free from my dad. so total is around $2000 after other odds and ends like gaskets timing set etc. The efi system was a few bucks but it made just as much power with a tuned holley 750double pumper I rebuilt (already had that). A proper timing curve also makes a huge difference.

@@cuffevlogz352 Have not dyno'd this combo but probably a bit better then 350 at the wheels. Desktop dyno puts it near 450 flywheel; but those numbers are really just a ballpark. This is a bone stock bottom end; and I'm going to a built rotating assembly over the winter.

What engine mods do you have besides that wicked cam to get it sounding like that??
@troyberg65
@troyberg65 2 жыл бұрын
well the cam requires the heads to have screw in studs so the valvetrain can be adjusted; It also had single groove stainless valves installed and dual springs to control them to 7200rpm. It has hooker longtube headers (open in the video) with 3" collectors. Up top is a torker intake and fast ezefi. Bottom end was a bone stock rotating assembly aside from the cam, good timing set and restrictors in the oil passages with factory flat tops running 9.8:1 static compression.

@@RipitRon The much of the mechanical odds and ends are already cleaned up; Paint and body is gonna be a while. It this state it was right after a motor refresh with the cam; the exhaust was getting re-done with an x-pipe And I was gutting some speaker wiring that was in bad shape. It gets the stock bottom end motor replaced with a fresh stroker this winter, then I have some rear suspension work I want to do. Maybe another year till I get back on body work (it was worse with a flintstone floor before). Front suspension is all redone now too. Cheers 👍
