Having been born and raised there in Park Slope, I met my husband down that block. There used to be two apartments per floor. The back doors were safety exit doors. What they did is cut the apartments in half and make it four apartments per floor, using the safety exits as new entrances. Those apartments weren't large in the first place. My thoughts may be unkind but my first honest thought was greed.

I hear this greed narrative a lot. It comes from a place of being uninformed. We need more housing to bring prices down. We should be pushing for more investment. NYC's housing crisis boils down to supply and demand. I think you should look at those individuals who block housing. More often than not those people have secured places to live.

@@New_York_Rat_Race Yes and no. More no. I owned a four family in Sunset Park in the 1970s. I'm 80. The rents for my tenants were 150 a month. I hear they are 2K plus each now in Brooklyn and not for a full apartment. The owner now bought it in the nineties. The apartments are very similar to what's here. Do you really believe it's only because of supply and demand? I think 1500 would be fair today but nothing is fair today when it comes to money. And it's not only rents. Just my opinion.
@New_York_Rat_Race21 күн бұрын
@@AngelasJoys I get it, some of these prices are crazy. However, if that owner listed the home at $1,500 a month, they would be swamped with requests to rent the apartment. The apartment that you commented on for example received a lot of requests and rented in a single day. So many requests that I couldn't even answer all of them. The market dictates the price. If someone is willing to pay X amount, that is the price. Is it fair, is it worth that much ... well yes - because that is what the market is dictating. If there was more supply and thus more competition for renters, then prices would come down. I would love to see prices come down. I am a renter and it gives me anxiety every time I list an apartment. You don't see the volume of interest some of these apartments get. I often turn down perfectly good applications. It kills me. I often say I wish I had 20 of these apartments so that I could give everyone who applied an accepted offer. I will keep pushing over and over again, we need more housing. The only way to bring down rents is to flood the market with housing. More housing will make owners compete for tenants. Thus bringing down prices.

@@New_York_Rat_RaceWhat ever happened to a weeks pay was the amount of rent you could afford? More housing building way up? I'm just glad I was young when I was. When streets had families and there actually was middle class. Good luck with your chosen profession. It must be very challenging.

Even in Seattle with lots of public transit and access to lots of shops and community and culture $2650 is still a 2-bedroom price in most neighborhoods, right downtown that's a 1 bedroom price though, but certainly at least 500 sqft

In all these types of studios, your best furniture option would be a Murphy bed …in this case … located directly opposite the entrance door (or thereabouts. Where the bed was …would become living/work area. When space is at a premium, you can’t afford to dedicate room for a conventional bed… unless you are out all day everyday. So yeah, you should be able to walk to the windows instead or rolling to the windows. 😂😉

@@niedobrulec As long as it meets code, it's OK. The main thing is the bedroom area has easy egress via the windows and there is air circulation of sorts. I think he may have a fire escape too. NY has had tenement laws because of the tenements in places like the west side where many immigrants lived in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Besides, it may well be what some called a Paris flat, meaning it has a full bath. Most tenements didn't initially had bathrooms inside, but later 2 bathrooms on each floor, then later in the 20's and 30's, they got bathrooms in each unit. In other words, they were retrofitted in later on, along with interior windows to get some air inside in the early law units. Later, the air shafts became a requirement, but they all were not large much like this place and many only had windows in the parlor (front room). But from reading over time, many of these were reworked, and not all were to code, but I think that this place in the video is to code.
