356 Rocker Panel Teardown - Bonus Greaserama Footage

On Day 1 of the KC Trip - The car was mounted to the rotisserie, we inspected the rocker panel areas and I started to tear apart the Swiss cheese that once was the car's structural system.

Yes. It came with almost everything needed to do all the repairs. I keep finding more pieces every time I look in the boxes that came with the car.

Yeah. They did the old "cave and pave" technique, so everywhere there was rot, there are surrounding dents to deal with! We'll get it done tho!!!

That bus was pretty sweet, so much detail. Looks like you got your hands full with the porsche, but man working with it up on its side makes actually fun to work on vs. underneath it on jack stands

Yea sometimes it is good to see someone has worked on them , but most times one wishes others just left things alone. . The VW Bus was very nice. I liked the colors .

This was the first time the PO had EVER welded... What a project to learn on! Some of the work isn't terrible, but some of it is a horror show... We'll get thru it!!

Greg, can you explain the back and forth from CO to KC? If it’s personal, that’s fine. I’ve followed for a long time and remember you moving, but why keep making such a drive? You (and Bob from I like to make stuff) are inspiring me to look for a similar project car.

I travel to KC a lot for work and all my family is there. I just happened to find the project through a friend of a friend and it was in KC... I stored it for a few weeks after I bought it and I needed to pick it up, so the whole trailer game started... Do you rent one way or go back and forth??? I also need to store the VW because I don't have room in my shop for 2 cars. When I looked at storage rates it was evident that driving the VW to KC and throwing it in the barn would be WAY less expensive. If you're itching to get into a project, the older air cooled cars are a great platform for learning. Start with one you don't care about too much. You'll make mistakes and the worst thing is getting paralyzed by fear. Once you've got the basics down, you can buy one you REALLY want. Cheers!

I just did all of the same metal replacement on my 356 . Holy moly it was a ton of work! And a huge learning experience. A bench would have been nice. I would fully build the doors with the window frames in place like you doing and build the car around them

I was beside myself... There is a lot of strength in the roof and the inner rocker. I'm still surprised the passenger side was so far off... Oh well. I'll get it straight again!
