in southern cal we use conventional lures on the boats with lures cast an wind . of you do not be mindful of the leveling of the line you can actually lock the reel up.either practice it or get a narrower reel it helps

This video was wholesome! Loved the story telling and pictures to articulate the experience. Loved the grandma and family experience and everything. Thank you for this footage. You’re the Kagami whisperer if there are any. Ps. i’ve only caught 2 uluas and both bit separate occasions when i was both packing up and almost ready to leave as well!

Funny those wrasse are like $60+ on the mainland. Sm Hawaiian Hawkfish, $40+ I had no idea you could stay out there, been there a few times and was telling my daughter I bet these embedded PVC is for fishing poles. Those razor rocks are dangerous, be careful. Beautiful fish.

For those new to Hawaii, I remember my dad told me he belonged to the Maui Casting Club, and about 75 years ago, and in those days, I think he caught 95 'ulua in one year, and came in second place. What he did tell me was that these fish in the jack family are called papio from small finger size up to #10, pa'u'u up to #20, and 'ulua from over #20. I see some other videos of people in Hawaii calling fish under #10 'ulua, and that's wrong, it teaches people the wrong names. Nice catch, also nice to show people how to catch he'e and use for bait, my dad would catch eel or puhi from near shoreline too.

Nah it’s under 10’ is papio and over 10’ is an Ulua
@hankakah41805 ай бұрын
@@HookedUpHI Look it up under Pa'u'u, in the Hawaiian dictionary, if you are going to use the Hawaiian language, use it, not use what non=Hawaiians think it is. pa'u'u : 1. Redup of pa'u, soaked. 2. Second stage of the growth of 'ulua, a fish. Cf. papio, ulua. 3. A variety of sweet potato.

Nice catch! I recommend saving the collars and either grill them with olive oil, salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, paprika or pan fry teriyaki style. There’s dark meat in there and it tastes ono
