35w VS 55w HID color effect difference

This video shows you what happens when you use difference ballasts. Most people don't understand why some HIDs show a different color with the same temp bulb. Usually when you use a high wattage ballast, the color washes off towards a lower temperature. The higher the wattage the lower the temperature color will show. Most people will say to just change the bulb temperature if you want a different color which IS true if you stay with the same ballast. Now if you change the ballast then that is where it will get complicated.
Video Description:
1st Demonstration - The 55w ballast with 6000k bulb will look like the 35w with a 5000k. Both are white.
2nd Demonstration- 55w with the 5000k will look more the the yellowish white color of a OEM HID system and/or of a OEM halogen bulb. And the 35w with the 6000k will have a white color with some tint of blue.
****FOR MOBILE VIEWERS**** 10/5/2012
I've noticed none of the Annotations can't be seen on a mobile device. I guess the KZbin app doesn't support it. It may not make a big difference but I just figured I'd let you know It can be a bit useful to see them especially at the end of the video and my spelling errors LOL ;)
Thanks for watching

I think he pretty much nailed it. 35W + 5000k is brighiter than 35W + 6000k but not as bright as any of the combinations using 55W. But that shld have been obvious. more power means more lumens. even with incandescent bulbs at home. just freeze the frames for the 2 demonstrations and compare them side by side. great job, Chris.

I know this is an older video, but it is probably the most useful one I've ever seen about HIDs... I have spent a lot of money messing with headlights (HIDs, LEDs, of different makes and colors etc.) And from a performance aspect (pitch black rural / mountain driving), 5000K - 5500K @ 35W and 6000K - 6500K @ 55W is definitely the way to go in terms of color temp. I am currently trying a 6500K @ 35W for a high beam, and it is definitely too blue, the hotspot on the ground stands out vs. my 6500K @ 55W low beams, and doesn't do nearly as good of a job illuminating the road, trees, etc. as the old 5000K @ 35W. For city driving and cool styling, sure 6500K @ 35W is going to be okay, but if you drive for long periods in pitch black conditions, you might get some eye strain with that color temp / output.

Good video I know it’s old, but I personally prefer 35w HIDs than a 55w as 55w just wash the colour out, for example if you use 8000k HID like I have in mine, the 55w HID will shift the colour down more like a 6000k. It also typically melts or burns the mirror reflector chrome out. Which is why 35w is way better less likely burning the reflector chrome out

THE POINT IS: THE 55W BALLAST WILL PRODUCE LESS OF A BLUE-TINT ON THE KELVIN TYPE BULB (4300-1,000k). IT PUSHES THE LIGHT WAVES TO BE MORE TRUE. THE VIDEO DEMONSTRATES HOW A HIGHER PUSHING BALLAST WILL MAKE SLIGHLTY LESS TINT COME OUT. YOU CAN PLAY WITH THE WATTS ON THE BALLAST + THE KELVIN OF THE BULB.

Here's what happened. When using the right combination of power bulbs+ballast you get correct color and light output. The 55W bulb turned blue as the 35W ballast does not fully turn it on it needs more power, take it as a kind of a dim effect. When you used the 55W ballast with the 35W bulbs as the bulb is a 5K color it only turned brighter and a little bit more whiter. What's going to happen if you mix wattage components? Using a lower wattage ballast will kill the ballast as it is being forced to work out of spec trying to keep the bulb on. Using a higher wattage ballast will kill either bulb or ballast as bulb does not have sufficient xenon gas and sodium to handle the excessive voltage given by ballast. ;) So it's right when they say compare apple to apple but some just didn't know it was all about wattage not kelvin color scale.

The bulbs dont have a wattage rating? They just have a temperature rating. Their wattage depends on the ballast used.

I know this is an older video but never got a chance to thank you for the share. I have 35 watt ballast for my low beams and 35 watt for my driving/fog lights and 55 watt for my high beams. They're all in 5000k. I like the 6000k in the 55 watt. I did the 4 high mod in my Silverado and the high beam is close to the low beam but I think the 6000k would make it look better and serve the purpose of the high beam better.

Good video. You may also find with cheaper 55w ballasts, it can wash out the colour of the bulb causing a yellow tinge even with same kelvin (e.g. 6000k).

didn't read many comments ,but most of the colors are rated for the 35 watt ballast , when you throw a 55w at it basically washes the color out and drops the kelvin , so 8k is more like a 5/6 or a 6k is more like a 5/4k , but all depends on the bulb, some manufactures rate a 8k when it's actually a 6 and so on

hids are perfect in a projector type housing that has the appropriate shield in it so people don't get blinded. People who put hids in a reflector type housing thats meant for a halogen are the ones giving everyone else a bad name. Yellow or white are legal in Australia but any blue then you attract the wrong attention easy. Makes sense to aim aftermarket fog projectors lower too as not to blind oncoming traffic.

most hid bulb are for 35w ballast thats just standard like any oem hid, 55w ballast is just an overclock version, so if you buy a 6500k hid bulb thats for 35w ballast, once you put them with 55w ballast, it will be brighter for sure but the color temparature will be washed out by about 1000k lower, it will look like a 5500k hid bulb.

I run 55w in my car and I have them wired with a relay. Not a problem with them yet and it's been about a year. There has been problems with fried wiring and it is do to initial start up. It does depend on the car and the gauge of wiring used. Be safe and use a relay and fused link from the battery.

Helpful video, now I need to change out my ballast (35w) to get rid of the hint of blue on my 6K bulbs with a (55w) ballast. Do you have any info on AC vs. DC ballast. I heard AC was better. Let me know if you do. Thanks again
@lemer3
@lemer3 10 жыл бұрын
Hey Alex, AC refering to Alternative Current means it is the home electricity which shocks us when we touch a cable an ground. DC referes to Direct Current and this type of electricity is usual on batteries, and you can touch the positive and negative of the source and it doesn't shock. The purpose of a ballast is to transfor DC Into AC and amplify it. The purpose of an AC ballast (found in fluorescent fixtures at home) is to amplify the the voltage. AC and DC ballast will throw an ignigter reserve when first powered on, and then reduce current and voltage depending on the bulb. Hope this helps.

And they all are true, that's why you must be careful when picking out your HID Brand, what headlight housing your putting it in as far as size and the material of the housing, and how much wattage(energy/Heat) your putting out. They sell wiring harness on eBay for good price, although, purchasing the hardness isn't entirely necessary. All depends if the factory wires can handle the additional stress. I've recently installed the hardness on my car. I'd rather be safe then sorry. ya never know :)

No it wont melt anything but you will have following effects: 35w 6000k bulb when powered with 55w ballast will give colour output as 5000-5500k , your starting warmup time will be quick, More brighter than 35w. The only downside a slight less life of bulb but that again only few hours so that negative point is negeligible plus you will get color like cold white led like on the new merc similar color to that which is eye candy to me and is my current setup.

mombasasherman well it will not. All depends upon bulb and ballast quality. I have used 35w ballast like DLT and hylux who shifts color even in 35w. Also what you mean by 6000k 55w. Does it mean 35w 6000k bulb with 55w ballast. If so then it will give output as 5000k but will be brighter than 35w 4300k. Actually most of 55w bulb available in market are actually rebagged 35w bulb for example if a bulb says 6000k 55w it is actually 8000k 35w bulb rebagged and sold with 55w ballast. Remember one simple thing a 35w bulb at 55w will be loose ~700-1200k temperature but with increase in output

SugarShane Lol actually what you just said was pointless. People want to see the same bulb with different ballasts? I pretty much just demonstrated that 😆
@the_color_orange
@the_color_orange 10 жыл бұрын
Chris Canela Yes, that's exactly what people want to see. That's how legitimate experiments are normally run, by changing only one variable to see what kind of effect it has on the outcome. We want to how the color of the same bulb varies when used on two different ballasts. That would definitely be the best way to demonstrate the color shift that occurs when using a more powerful ballast.
@the_color_orange
@the_color_orange 10 жыл бұрын
Chris Canela Nevermind, I see that you did sort of do that. It still would have been a lot more helpful if you had two identical bulbs installed at the same time, and had one hooked up to a 35W ballast and the other to a 55W ballast; that way, we could have seen any color shift that occurred as a result of the difference in power immediately rather than looking at two different bulbs.

I got a 5000k h7r bulb on a 55w. I hate the 6000k look. Looks so cheap. I tried them on my new used car, but it have too much glare. Doesn't look worse than the new cars. But it would be better if I used them in a projector lamp.

yes HID's require less power AFTER the ballast ignites and the arc is created, but at startup they require alot of amps to ignite the bulb that's why people's wiring gets melted. A 35w should be ok with oem wiring 55w or higher a relay should be used to prevent problems. The cheapest and best ballasts are v v m e brand. Please don't use 55w or higher hid without a projector install. The whitest and brightest light off a 35w ballast is 5k oem white or 6k on a 55w ballast.Don't buy cheap xentec's.

Guys can you help? I wanted to switch from 35W H.I.D to 55W but while I already got my 55W bulbs, I just learnt that 55W ballast should go to a well ventillated area cause they draw more power and thus more heat will be produced, also wires maybe not up to the task. So if I already had my bulbs anyway I gave it a try and 55W bulbs worked just fine with the 35W ballast, they gave me strong white color, they turned on fast and they worked so far, I've been using them for a full day. Should I continue using them this way? Or will I damage to ballast? I only care about the ballast, I already know the bulbs will last only about 1000 hours instead of the 2000-3500 but thats not such a problem for me. But I don't wanna lose the ballast. Can someone help me with that?

i have a 2003 Grand Am 3.4L v6 problem with my headlights i have HID lights with Can-Bus Ballasts the problem that i am having is the when the lights are shinning on the wall or ground it is impossible to adjust cause my head lights has a center piece that is kinda open in the center and i have noticed on the standard halogen bulb has a painted end on the bulb when they work fine but not bright enough so i decided to go with the HID and then noticed that the end of the bulb has no paint on the tip or chrome so my problem is how do i fix this the lights are shinning everywhere but cannot adjust and has big shadows on the ground and on the wall my reflector center piece has no chrome tip is there away that i can make a reflector to make the lights shine better look up the headlights and you can see what i mean about the open center reflector.

Had that too (like a figure shaped shadow pattern) on a 2004 Grand Am even after installing new OEM assembly, must've been a defect in design. Switched to projectors but that narrowed the beam pattern with LEDs.

Ballasts usually don't need too much power to stay on. The pair I have can work as low as 9v.

I'll stick to the 35w, hopefully cop won't notice it as much as 55w. I use projector headlight so I'm not blinding anyone, even the light is precisely accurate I measured it, but still since the car originally came with halogen reflector headlights, even though my new headlights have projectors, still I can't use the xenon legally because it requires automatic height adjuster and washer.

Hey this question is open to anybody who may have a possible resolutions. I bought 35 W 8000k H ID lights for my Honda accord 2004. And it seems that the side with the battery the drivers, is a lot brighter and wider then the right side. Any reasons why this may be I'm thinking because of cheap aftermarket bulbs and or ballasts?

your wrong,lumens=brightness.. color temperature affects the lumen output. 5k also referred to as oem white has the highest lumen output on a 35w ballast any higher and the lumens start to drop off. There is a reason 5k is used on almost all cars with hid's and it's because it lights up the road the best without the annoying lumen killing blue tint.
