People aren’t here to see the precise issues we have so they’re making suggestions based on what they can see in our videos and that in its self shows just how thoughtful people are and how helpful they’re trying to be.

A couple of suggestions one is get your self a big cold chisel and keep it reasonably sharp and you can use it to knock off the dross much quicker than a grinder also if you want really nice cuts with the plasma cutter, mark your job on both sides then grind your marks out to get rid of the mill scale or paint then cut, you will find it will be like a pencil cut as we can see on the video how the plasma cutter is splattering now and then, that's the mill scale making the arc blow under the mill scale and cutting anywhere it can get through also PLEASE PLEASE use your metal thicknesser to check the bottom of the compressor tank because after a few years of neglect and rusting on the inside they can explode violently and we don't want that exploding beside jack or anyone for that matter, and make sure you bleed the water everyday when in use. Cheers from down under

A good tip from an older boilermaker, for the welding in of new steel, weld the inside completely first then use a grinder to clean out and grind a groove into the joint from the outside, this will give very good penetration and will result in a weld profile that is not as high so less to grind, iam not sure if this was the way which this first patch was done, if so you are on the right track, as well for larger sections around the chines, strongbacks will help control weld distortion and any stingers that were removed should be reinstalled before welding the rest in this will help retain the original lines, you are doing a great job and it will be well worth it when finished, Jack is always good value and you can both be proud of him, keep up the good work! Cheers Chris Lake Macquarie New South Wales Australia

Grinding, welding, it's all systems go and it's fantastic to have audience participation to speed things along. Just a thought, if you weld a temporary attachment point on the deck to secure a couple of halyards to you could safely release the stays and get the bow done and make the most out of your happy helpers. I see Jedi Jack's becoming one with the force but will the force be strong enough to get his room clean.🏴☠️😁
@miru713 жыл бұрын
When I started building a boat, I also cut everything with a plasma cutter, but ... it's a double job. You cut with plasma and then even everything with a grinder. It is best to cut straight away with an angle grinder. You then have the perfect edge the first time. Try it once and you will see for yourself.

Good to see that the steeljob is turning out very well. Good that you invested in good tools. These tools in combination with an experienced welder is already half the job. I am sure the steelworks of the boat will become as good as it was after the newbuilding. I did a similar repair on my own boat last year using welding electrodes. When watching your video it looks like CO2 welding is more easy for such job. Next time I am also gonna use CO2. One remark. If I was the owner of the polyester neighbor boat, I should not be happy with all that grinding and cutting on a few feet from my boat without any protection. Usually all the sparks and grinding dust is flying around and giving damage to boats in the vicinity. It is blown by the wind and it at least stains on other boats. So I advise you to well cover your work area by a tarp in order not to damage your neighbors boat and keep the owner happy. Always keep in mind that in case your neighbor should start complaining at the owner of the yard your cutting and grinding works might be stopped at once and also giving all kind of other unpleasant discussions as well. And I am sure that's not what you want. Success with the further restauration and looking forward to next episode.
@SailingMelody3 жыл бұрын
You’re right on both accounts We’re using a heavy Argon mix for welding but yes it makes things faster than. Stick welding. We are using a tarpaulins and fire blankets and sheets of plywood to move around to stop sparks etc going where they shouldn’t and the boat is actually further away than it looks on the camera, the go-pro camera does strange things to distance snd perspective. But you’re 100% correct snd we are taking that seriously We have a constant “fire watch” which includes being vigilant as to where the sparks or dust are going and responding dynamically to that situation

great videos! enjoy watching them even though i am a "landlubber" - amazing the amount of work that's involved to get it "ship shape". melody seems to be in good hands! have you watched "odd life crafting" and "sailing yaba" - also very interesting, odd life crafting has been reconditioning a steel boat just like you and has done an amazing job of it. amazing to see the transformation. yaba is quite different, a wooden boat, much respect to them for tackling the task of reconditioning a wooded sailing boat. i find it very interesting watching the 'old style' skill of the carpenters involved in yaba's rebuild. quite interesting to see the differences between the skills involved in working on a wooden boat compared to a steel boat. keep up the good work. i will be as excited as you three to see the end product and especially to see the maiden voyage!

Great work achieved 👏 see you bought one of the rotating blasters not cheep but sure it will help in the short term till you can move yard and sand blast. If you don't wear it out it will be handy for future small maintenance jobs. If you keep making good progress i would be tempted to tackle the bow section as well. Wouldn't be to worried about the mast remember all the rigging is designed to take the load with a full set of sails. Under bare poles the loads will be minimum, you could also use the halyard for the genoa and spinnaker fixed on port and starboard to help. 👍🏻⛵
@SailingMelody3 жыл бұрын
Good point. My only concern is that the chain plates on the coachroof are quite badly corroded and will be replaced and I'm not sure how compromised they are interns of the ability of the lowers and shrouds to hold the bare poles up. I'm probably being over cautious though you're right.
@almath99873 жыл бұрын
@@SailingMelodyYou will always know your boat better and agree as I / we all only see a snap shot of what's happening. Nothing wrong with being cautious, just offering my tuppence as food for thought if you get to the stage of should we do the bow or wait🤞 I think the bow section will be the largest part of the project based on your hull thick reading so understand if you want to take more time to carry out this work than rushing it before hitting the water. Good luck
@SailingMelody3 жыл бұрын
Your input is very very welcome and invited! And most gratefully received. I think to be honest you’re correct and even with some corrosion on the chain plates they’re probably still more than strong enough. So we should just crack on with it really. Ok I’ll be brave 😂😂

@@almath9987 Joni know exactly what you mean, and don’t worry I don’t take it as patronising at all. Lots of people are so generous and helpful in offering advice snd tips and we’d be fools to turn our nose up and any advice: and as you say it’s difficult to convey sometimes by text and easy to misread people’s intent.
