I'm almost positive that Kirby's name was chosen less because of John Kirby, the lawyer, and more because of the contrast involved. Kirby is usually a harsh, strong sort of name, and giving it to a pink puffball was funny to the creator. Even if that puffball ended up becoming a literal god.
@Oturan20 Жыл бұрын
Correction it _was_ a harsh, strong sort of name. Being attached to the Pink puffball has softened it. as now there are two things that pop into my head when I hear the name Kirby, The games and Jack Kirby the famous comic book artist.

*Actually Olimar's name is much more complex:* Japanese is written in characters that represent syllables (except for the vowels and the letter N which appears often at the end of Japanese words.) Mario's name in Japanese is written with the characters "Ma", "Ri" and "O". Now Olimar's name wasn't just mixed around randomly: *If you read those characters backwards, you get O - Ri - Ma.* And if you say that quick enough, you'll hear the obvious "Olimar". _Especially if you consider, that there's no real L or R in Japanese; they instead have a sound that lies somewhere betwen them._
@VisualGourmet9 жыл бұрын
It's the same with e.g. Krillin. Everbody knows Krillin's Japanese name: Kuririn. To understand that you have to know that the U is most often left out while speaking; similar to our G in "doin' sth" or our U in "let's do sth". If you now consider that the Rs sound very similar to Ls, you end up with first "K'ririn" and then "Krillin".
Just wanna point out that you can spell Mario with Olimar.
@Oturan20 Жыл бұрын
It's something like an "r" said like an "l" It's why _context_ is very important in Japanese.

There were a few different names suggested for Mega Man. "Battle Kid", "Mighty Kid", "Rainbow Warrior Miracle Kid", and "Battle Rainbow Rockman" were all proposed, the "rainbow" referencing Mega Man's color-changing ability whenever he attains a new weapon. Rockman was eventually settled on for the reasons stated in the video. In canon, Dr. Light chose the names "Rock" and "Roll" for his affinity with that genre of music. In American releases, when Rock volunteered to be converted into a fighting robot to combat Dr. Wily's army, his blaster was given the name "Mega Buster", for its incredible power. Because of this, Rock decided to be called "Mega Man". The origins of Dr. Light (Dr. Right in Japan) and Dr. Wily's names are a little bit more interesting. The origins of the surnames are plain to see. "Light" represents good and "wily" representing evil; the latter term also being a synonym for sneaky, which could be seen in Dr. Wily's character. The full names of either roboticist are Dr. Thomas Light and Dr. Albert Wily. Dr. Wily's first name Albert is taken from Albert Einstein, who, despite being universally viewed as an upstanding man, coordinated the research that went into the development of the atomic bomb, two of which were dropped on Japan in August 1945. From there, the correlation is easy to see. Dr. Light's first name of Thomas comes from Thomas Edison, who is arguably believed to have invented the incandescent light bulb, another reference to his American name. In canon, while developing Mega Man X, Dr. Light chose the name "X" because of the robot's unknown potential, that which Dr. Light himself would not live to see.

Actually, he was originally supposed to be called "Monkey Kong", but someone fucked up and we got donkey kong. Something I love about the "Universal Studios vs Nintendo" is the end result. It turned out that Universal DIDN'T have the rights to King Kong. Not only did they not own King Kong, but the king kong game they released (which was pretty much donkey kong with a different name) was seen as a violation of NINTENDO'S intellectual property, and won millions from the case. Nintendo won that case so hard that they came out of court with MORE money than they did going in.

There's actually a bit more to the "Mr. Needlemouse" name than people might think, as it comes from a discretion between languages. @TheDecatonkeil9 жыл бұрын
***** I find it weird that a Japanese man of the age of the father of Miyamoto would have a name with such implications (foreign, christian... christians are a negligible minority in Japan). No mention of grandparents so I don't know where the information comes from.

You could've gone further on the Kingdom Hearts segment; three other major characters who are best friends- Terra (Earth), Ventus (Wind), and Aqua (Water) all have the basic name origins of Sora (Sky), Riku(Land), and Kairi(Ocean), only their names are derived from Latin, not Japanese. Also, each character with a similar elemental name has strong ties to each other; Riku gets his Keyblade from Terra, Sora gets his Keyblade from Ventus, and Kairi gets her Keyblade from Aqua.
@rotallyPumpered6 жыл бұрын
Snake did get his name from Snake Plissken. Kojima has talked about it in the past, stating in his regular movie editorial in Official UK PlayStation 2 Magazine how cool he thought the character was when he first saw Escape from New York, and how he mimicked how he dragged his leg for a while afterwards. John Carpenter was charmed by the homage, and wrote supportive comments that were printed in Japanese versions of Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance and Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence. There's also Snake's pseudonym, "Iriquois Pliskin" in MGS2, which is an obvious reference to the character.
@Bamboo_bazooka9 жыл бұрын
and any kingdom hearts fan knows that in KH:BBS the characters are named Ventus,Terra and Aqua which is a nice little reference to the meanings of Sora, Riku and Kiari as the 3 names all mean the same things with Ventus , Terra and Aqua all being the latin words for the air, earth and water

The reason that people think Snake was named after Plissken because in MGS2, Snake goes by the alias "Plisken" to hide his identity from Raiden. It's pretty obvious though that Big Boss, who also had the codename "Snake", is heavily inspired by Plissken though. They both have an eyepatch, similar features, and even a similar background, once war heroes who ultimately turned traitor due to perceived failures/betrayals in the U.S. government. However, it's hard to say what came first. It's possible that Kojima named the character "Snake" first and later planted references to Plissken in the sequels, but it could go either way. I liked this new show, but I feel like a lot of this was very surface-level stuff and there's probably a deeper story to some of these (like Snake and Fox). I'm not sure what the plan is for this series, but I think digging a little deeper is always good for these sorts of things. Still good though, learned a few things :)

Finally, someone brings up King Koopa! Even in the US, some of us knew him by that name too, cuz in the cartoon (which most people can't stand nowadays) King Koopa was called that, and in the first 2 games with him, he breathed fire like a freakin' dragon! Then came Super Mario World, when I first started hearing people call him "Bowser", and he traded his awesome fire-attack for a stupid clown-faced helicopter thing. So as a kid, I I figured Mario must have destroyed King Koopa, and Bowser must be a a different monster altogether. I even thought about random stuff, like what if they teamed up, or who would win in a fight - which is even funnier now considering "koopa" is the name of a soup - is it turtle soup or something? :D But anyway, thanks for the awesome video! I knew the Mario and DK stories, and even Pac-Man's (except for the Japanese root work). But I didn't know the stories of Zelda Mega-Man or Crash or Master Chief, or the pokemon. Very, very cool! :)

I know one that wasn't covered in the video. PaRappa the Rapper was named PaRappa because "parappa" means paper-thin in Japanese, and the art style of the games has everyone paper-thin.
