There are some ( live changing) desicions to make for other people and its so hard to believe that this is possible with that much stress. Wow.

Haha “drop in the bucket!” That said, I’m 52 hours into my 72 hour call shift so “dent in the bucket” feels really appropriate 😅😴
@eugenek.99593 жыл бұрын
But why are these shifts so long? Doesn’t it affect your performance? Isn’t it enough doctors or smth
@dellaliz16103 жыл бұрын
@@eugenek.9959 This is one of those questions I could write an essay on 😅 There’s a lot of reasons, but usually what determines the length of a call shift for a given speciality is: call volumes, compensation structure, number of doctors in a call group and if it’s in house (you don’t leave the hospital at all) or “home call” (you are home until you get called in). At least for my call group: we do low risk OB, and are a group of 5 doctors, we’re billed “per delivery” (so you’re less likely to actually get paid for the work you do on short shifts) and do “home call.” So our schedule is one day per week and one 3 day weekend every 5 weeks. That worked well when our volumes were lower, but they’ve increased now so we’re actually looking at transitioning to a 2 day call shift instead. In house call is almost always capped at 24 hours in my experience. But yes, at the volumes we’re at now it 100% impairs your performance as you may be awake for way too many hours in a row or are only grabbing interrupted sleep.

I can imagine what that loneliness feels like. My advice would be to just remind yourself what he's doing. His work is so important that it is not bound by conventional hours or schedules. Same with my job. At the hiring event, they told us "You won't miss everything. But you're gonna miss a lot. It is not a convenient life. But that's why we pay you what we do. We pay you well to have an inconvenient life." It's not unlike having a family member in the military. In their case, they're gone for months at a time, and you literally grow up while they're away. But as you get older, you realize that the work they're doing is important, it's 24/7, and it's reason to be proud of them and love them more.
