On travel products: I keep a travel "get ready" bag packed that is identical to my daily "get ready" bag. When I run out of deodorant for example, I take the one from the travel bag for daily use, then purchase a new one for the travel bag. That way all the travel products stay fresh without expiring and I never forget something. Also, I never run out of anything because there's a backup in the travel bag in the closet!

This has nothing to do with bathrooms, but just want to say: I have been following your method for 2.5 years now and today my 5-year-old son randomly told me: “I actually like it better now that we have less toys.” He followed up with, “but there is one piece I need back from Grandma’s house.” Love that he is feeling the benefits of decluttering and now knows EXACTLY which toys he has AND where to find them. ❤

One day my husband came home with a giant can of Lysol and a giant bottle of listerine. I went to the hall closet and filled a giant laundry basket with giant containers of Lysol and Listerine and dragged it to my husband. He asked where did all that come from and I told him he had bought it because I never buy Lysol spray or Listerine. That was about twenty years ago. Since then he never buys any personal care products, cleaning products, or medicines without asking me first if we already have it. So yes, I do understand what you mean about people going to the store and buying everything when there is already too much of it at home. Thanks for the video Dawn!

I think our organization starts with being more mindful in the first place of what we’re buying, especially if we already have it in the cupboard or on a shelf. It’s a BESY BY date. Not some magical expiration date. They put those dates on them so for instance, someone doesn’t use it 20 years later and they get sick from it and try and sue the company. By putting dates on them, it protects them from us. Just use the sniff test. I use things a year and 2 after the date. Heck, when we were cleaning out my grand parents house 5 years ago, I found a bottle of my Vidal Sassoon shampoo from when I was in high school back in the early 80’s. Guess what? I used the shampoo. I recently did a declutter to reset my bathroom closet organization - several very expired items. My husband asked ''do we need to get new ones" of the expired items. NO! we obviously aren't using these products if they've been in the closet so long they expired. There's this tendency we have towards scarcity mindset. The reality - whatever we need, we can get. Very likely even get delivered same day!

I did an amazing thing the other day. I had $100’s of dollars of nutrimetics in my bathroom that I hadn’t used, I brought them back in June 2023. I looked at them and thought I’ve got to get rid of them but they cost a lot of money but I’m not going to use them but the money I’ve spent! . These are the arguments a recovering hoarder goes through. So I contacted my friend who I went to the party with and asked her if she wanted them. She said you sure, Yep because if you don’t take them I’m going to donate them. She gratefully took them and I now have less in my bathroom. Dawn because of you I’m learning to let go of things that were for yrs I would have kept. Thank you for walking beside me in my decluttering journey.

In the past I’d buy the big one bc it’s so economical and you’re running to the store less (per se). But then I’d see a different product and buy it bc it was fun and I was bored of the half used one at home. Now I buy the small one and no backups. After purchasing, as I unpack groceries or medications or anything that has an expiry date, I label the expiry date of the item with a Sharpie. It saves so much time later when checking stock. The bigger the markings, the better.

I do this too.

I learned to make my own products to cut down on buying items I don't need. I learned to make my own lotion bars, moving to soap, shampoo bars etc. So, you make what you need and don't buy stuff, which if you have ADHD like some do we forget we have stuff and then we buy more. Also, many times the expiry dates for lotions etc. are just a date and you can still use it. It forces you to buy new stuff instead of using it. Learned this working in the industry but be safe about it.

I like the white containers over the green too! I have such small bathrooms with no drawers at all. I am so envious. Sigh.

Sue Wolfe- To make it easier, I used a sharpie marker on the lid of each medication so I could tell at a glance the expiration date. Then, I take the expired ones to a pharmacy for proper disposal. I don't want to put them in the land or water supply. I also do this with prescription medication. 👌👍❤️❤️

Yes, we take our expired meds to our local CVS.

We are remodeling our bathroom now, and we had to move all our stuff into the second bathroom. there's so much stuff that won't make it back to it's original home. Thank you for helping me let go.

It seems that every time I see one of your videos I put my smartphone down and start to declutter within 30 seconds. Lol. Sometimes I don’t want to watch b/c I know that I will have to be accountable to myself and to my goal of being a minimalist. I am two years “in” to watching your videos, Dawn, and I thank the world for you. I am able to watch your videos, get inspired, and move forward. That’s a pretty powerful message you have there and I appreciate you. ❤ It’s a challenge to maintain a “quiet” home b/c I LOVE to thrift and sometimes find myself buying someone else’s clutter. Are you able to do a video series on “How to ‘curb’ thrifting or unnecessary dollar store purchasing?” Just because something is on sale doesn’t mean it’s going to be worth bringing into your home.

Wow! I had no idea about shampoos, conditioners and the like expiring. I never noticed the symbol. Thank you for valuable information.

I am two months away from retirement (yay!) and I can’t wait to have time to fully declutter my house! It’s the first thing on my post retirement checklist. 😊. Thank you Dawn for showing me how much easier it is to keep a clean and tidy home when you have much less inventory!

I don't buy cold/flu products because they only last a year and my husband and I might not get sick for 2-3yrs. However, I always need allergy meds because I'm allergic to cats and I have 4. Yes, they are worth it!!

Put some of those duplicates into your travel bag! That way you know you'll have it on your next trip, and not have to run out to buy it. I keep a medicine bag for travel because too often, I or someone in my family gets sick, bit by a bug, gets swimmers ear, etc. So I travel with a small pharmacy bag to alleviate needing to take my time shopping for it, or spending extra money. And for me, my life is easier when I can just grab the already filled bag and throw it into my suitcase. I do double check it's contents just in case first.

Gotta Admit it Dawn, I was one who thought "Really?" about changing green containers for white. But then when I saw them, I loved it! LOL It IS brighter and easier to see the items. I've been watching you for years and still picking up tips. :D

Extra bath salts if you don't use them in the bath toss them in the washer they do well for your clothes and it'll use them up so you don't have the guilt of tossing it 😊

My bathroom nemesis is BandAids😂 When I decluttered, I had SO many boxes of asst bandaids.
@AMcDub07083 ай бұрын
I have a plastic shoebox similar to what Dawn showed. Bandaids get dumped out of their boxes and into the bin. Neosporin floats around loose in there. The kids just paw around and grab the size they need. It looks ugly but when I tried to make it organized it ALWAYS ended up exactly like I keep it now 😂 Now I don’t fight it or care.
@dsmith97963 ай бұрын
I don't know about now but years ago, when I taught school, teachers could always use donated bandaids.

It seems silly to me, but, some bandage brands have best before dates on them.

I don’t care for one second if the package says I should eat the raw cookie dough or not. I’m definitely eating it. Sometimes, my cookie dough doesn’t even make it to the oven. Thanks for another great video. My decluttering/organizing/maintaining is a work in progress, but I am so happy to have found you right before Christmas last year. You basically saved my life!

Hi Dawn. Mechanical engineer here from neighboring Iowa here. Fun fact, you're precticing something called "5S" in the manufacturing world. You do the other 2 "S"s without realizing it. Shine and Standardize. But the Japanese would be VERY impressed that you brought 5S down to 3S. The Japanese are always trying to improve current processes. It's engrained in their culture. Something America just doesn't grasp, but we're working on it. Mostly in households just like yours. So, congrats and thanks for sharing.

Since my spouse retired from the military, I have decluttered MANY health/beauty products! Every time one or both of us had to travel for military duty, we (he) would inevitably need to buy something we forgot to pack. I have a travel bag packed with essentials all the time (I still travel a lot) and he doesn't bring home anything extra anymore.😂
