My stepfather (several decades ago) was an artist, a painter. We had an acquaintance, a commercial artist. My stepfather explained to me that the difference was that the c a had learned a series of tricks whereby he could make a clever representation of a scene, but that artists did not used hackneyed tricks. When I look at videos teaching water color painting on you tube most of them teach such tricks, but I have become allergic to that approach. They don’t even start with looking at the world, using the eyes. That is part of why I enjoy watching your work.

Oh there is no shame whatsoever in providing for you and your loved ones. It is what it is at this moment in time. Work isn’t meant to be a degrading word. If everyone was responsible, educated in their job and required to take care of ourselves in a healthy way what a difference it would make. But we all need the city workers, health and protection along with teaching. We thank certain ones for the jobs they do but truly everyone who takes there job seriously is worthy of commendation. The young generation hasn’t all learned to manage farms, animals, gardens and it didn’t involve pleasantries all day and the desire to want to work is not what it used to be. If we didn’t work as kids then we just didn’t have clothes for the next school year, a pair of jeans and shoes. We worked in the lunchroom because we could eat for free. It didn’t hurt us a bit. Working for oneself has it’s challenges likewise and taxes. No shame in that at all, it is respectable.

I take a step back from my finished paintings and let them go. While I know I did it, in my mind I hand it over to others. Occasionally I will paint a painting I can't let go of... when that happens it remains mine. I have one in my spare room that I let go of, but my daughter begged me not to sell, because she couldn't let it go. It made sense, she is the little girl chasing a seagull in it. That's okay to, I will keep it for her.

Amazing idea about the tables, I was shocked, tables and art on the wall. What a terrific idea! Lovely bright washes by the way on the painting that you started. That looks cheery, happy. I think that area is an important part of history in the Netherlands and the appeal of peace and justice is something universal. I was trying to figure out if your first wash was just Hansa yellow deep but it reminded me of Daniel Smith’s new color of yellow chromium titanate also, none the less a beautiful bright background. I am still painting in the poppy field. Enjoy your weekend and congratulations again on your work now on the walls. Also it is true, we don’t truly own possessions. Many rent but owners always have to pay house taxes so technically a home doesn’t truly belong to one. Our work reflects who we are and what we value and it is true, that part, our abilities we own but we were endowed with the ability to enhance them. Nothing we buy can add a cubit to our lives but we have to use technology to provide for ourselves and families. Most I think protested internally with having to get smart phones and they can be for good or bad. I lock out what I do not want to see because it does affect our thoughts and hearts and nobody is immune. Have a great weekend it is officially Friday.😊

@@TitusMeeuws it’s one of my favorite colors to layer with to allow playing with the light even along with a bit of quin coral. DaVinci has about the same quality and brightness but I think that they might be more difficult to get in Europe. The earth tones are quite good also and help save a bit on cost. But DS gradations for ultramarine and cobalt blue are a bit better, at least that is what I have learned over time. I really love blending ultramarine pink no Pw6 with ultramarine violet for a transparent violet. Your painting will be really vibrant and beautiful always cheerful.

I suspect he'd say the kind of soft rag paper that allows such beautiful flowing washes has a texture that is absolutely wrong for pen and ink. And the way he uses his whole arm to draw all those long straight lines would be too much force for a pen nib.

The stuff that looks like wax paper? Well it could be just that, or it could be glassine which is used especially because there is no acidity issues and pastelists such as myself use it. Or it could be cooking paper. Since it’s just for a short time until it gets framed it keeps it from collecting dust. Glassine comes in large sheets and is sometimes used even under my hand as I work to keep skin oils from transferring to cotton paper. A small piece protects the paper or for pastel/colored pencil work it stops the smudging. At any rate that’s the idea as eating close to where we paint can cause unwanted new color combinations. 😊

He has mentioned quite a few times in comments also that he uses vegan brushes. I have noticed that he uses DaVinci Casaneo brushes and even larger ones. For the interesting tree leaves there are brushes that have a center area that is a bit longer for mark making although it does appear that Titus cut a bit of the edge to add interest to leaves. I have had that same brush and have used it about a year and cut it too, I didn’t realize how popular it was. But he has mentioned that he prefers to use vegan brushes. Escoda has a great line of Versátil synthetic great wc brushes, Princeton does also. Black Silver Velvet brushes are lovely and synthetic squirrel type. Mop brushes and flats are considered the largest. As far as his oil brushes I imagine the long handle version would be the difference. It is whatever works for you. Paper he uses is Arches, the thickest type which is unnecessary to stretch. Nothing wrong with the 140lb. I stretch it and it saves a lot of money. There are many beautiful cotton watercolor paper brands, Saunders Waterford, Hahnemule, Kilimanjaro is the same as Fabriano Artistico in case one didn’t know and all of these are 100% cotton rag also LanAquarelle although I find that scrubbing is a bit more touchy on that wc paper. Again not every country has the same things available but there are great brands available. Titus would paint his same style on any of them. As long has one has good paper than the rest is brush mileage. Happy painting and enjoy. It isn’t about all the brands and that probably is why he doesn’t bring that up so much. Enjoy painting!😊

When you do commissions, it's fair that the client owns the reproduction rights. The copyright. But when you sell in a gallery, you could retain the copyright. As a watercolourist I always find it frustrating that once a paintiing is behind glass, most people can't tell the difference between an original and a good reproduction. At least in Canada, 'limited edition' prints on archival paper, signed in pencil have ruined the market for original watercolours. People buy a poster for $100 and spend $500 framing it. That's why I went back to illustrating on the computer.

When I sell an original painting here in the US the artist retains the copyright and it is to protect the artist, they don’t belong to the one who purchased. But the painting is not mine therefore the talent stays with whoever created the artwork or me. The owner legally can not go make copies and sell them. I retain the production rights in writing because the talent didn’t come from the owner if he or she purchased the original. My family has had terrible things happen such as others taking photos of their work and then the person who took the photos started making prints of them. That is stealing. If it was a portrait or a home then that to me belongs to the owner of the painting completely. Maybe they want to use it for cards for example or a B & B. That would be different. But keeping up with a demand for original paintings can be difficult too. Many don’t want to pay over a couple of hundred, which is what a print can cost because in general there is a lack of appreciation of the skills, time and forethought of the artist. It is frustrating and no easy answer for the moment. So I don’t understand why some would say the owner can do whatever they want with the painting because they can’t legally and that is why there is copyright protection. I do not believe that this was what was being talked about in the video because I can’t imagine Titus giving permission for everyone who purchased his paintings or books to copy his paintings and he not retaining copyright. The painting itself is the owner’s. So I don’t understand why it was stated that the owner has the copyright. Any photo one takes is automatically copyrighted to protect photographers even if it is not a very good one. Some kind photographers allow others to use their photos but only to sell the impression or art work as the photographer retains the ability to decide to whom they allow to paint using their photo. If an artist tried to pass themself off as Titus or any other artist then Titus would have the right to compensation based on the laws of copyright infringement in his country.

Exactly, I don’t want someone running around making copies of my work and it’s happened to others in my family. But I can understand if it is someone’s home and they have a B&B or use them as cards then that’s fine with me. Even portraits used as business cards are fine. Word of mouth creates more work. But that is it because copyright infringement is a serious thing. If someone were to use something as practice then it needs to be noted on the work. I have no problem with copying to learn but with open request. It is just honest, shows even respect for those who are deceased to write the original painter above our name then our’s underneath then study. We used to do that with Vermeer I remember. 😊

300lb /640gm Arches doesn’t need to be stretched, it would be a waste of time. I have only had one time where such a super soaker started to bend but it was loaded with many layers and pushed to the max. 140lb works great but even better stretched on Gatorboard. I cover the ends of my board with clear strong tape and duct tape making the boards waterproof for pours. They won’t bend and handle stapling again and again. If you have sketched on it before stretching it is very difficult to erase marks.😊
