Do you know there are some university art lecturers who can't even draw! They just regurgitate education packs. This is part of the deterioration of art principles revolving around liberal individualistic artistic expression theory from the 1960s onward. Thankfully there is now a kick back of an art realism movement and the growth of Atelier schools teaching actual classic artistic principles.

@unemilifleur4 жыл бұрын
0:46 That's funny, because this explaination is absolutly clear and it's a great way to explain what we see.... but it's also completely wrong! The reality is the opposite, each surface *absorbs* some part of the white light, so the light that is reflected is the light that we usually see when we look at the object (i.e. the object's color). The light doesn't gain colors, it looses them! That said, it changes absolutly nothing about composition and it makes the explaination more complicated (so I understand why it was simplified the way it was), but it's really funny!
@devtomar89064 жыл бұрын
Yes, surfaces absorb the colour of light that hits them and reflect their own colour. so a green card would absorb all colours other than green.
@CrescentUmbreon4 жыл бұрын
I think the reason he used the phrase "gained color" is because sunlight is kinda white and already comprised of basically all the colors. Since we don't consider white a color, you might say it "gains" a green color when hitting a green surface. But yeah, you're correct. I was thinking the same thing all scientifically like, "Oh yeah, the surface absorbs all color except it's own lol and that's why grass is green"
@marilynmccormick16583 жыл бұрын
It's been 30 years since I studied color theory but I remember it as you explained it about absorption and reflection of light.

This video just got me really excited. For a while now I've become more aware of the different colors in shadows and such, especially in many paintings by artists I look up to. However I didn't really get the theory behind it and it left me a little frustrated whenever another painting of mine failed because I couldn't get a grasp of how this all worked. But now!! I'm just so so excited to go and paint, to put all this theory into practice! Thank you for this wonderful video, I can already say that it helped me lots in understanding light and color :)

what i like about watching Marco Bucci is that the more you learn about his process the more perspective it gives on what he's saying, for instance, he keeps saying that the colours get grayer the more the light rays bounce on a surface BUT we know that Marco LOVES colour as it allows him to express himself - so that made me ask "wouldn't he try to keep as much colour in the painting as possible?" So I looked at his choice in colour, which at first i thought was a random generalization of what ever grey was available was actually the more saturated version of those grays that fit into the logic of the painting! And that's only because i watched all of his past videos repeatedly so i had good context on what he was ACTUALLY saying and not just what i heard point blank so i had a better understanding of what he was talking about. Thank you Marco! You have really helped me a lot during my artistic venture now knowing how to take artistic licence while also following the rule of the fundamentals of digital art!

Great stuff! I have always been intrigued by the fact that an object being red looks like it is red because it soaks up all the green and blue color spectrum when lit by a white light. In that case, the bounced light does not inherit the redness of the object... It simply loses all the blue and green light that was in the light ray.

It's not that light mixes with the colour. It's that the object absorbs the colours of the light rays, reflecting off the colour you see the object being, ambient lighting being the colour of the object as a result of this. It's subtractive. Light consists of the spectrum of colours in the rainbow, which is why it appears white. The more vibrant an object is, the more light it is reflecting, making the ambient light stronger.

I remember this saying "color of the light is the color of the light source, color of the shadow is the color of the environment" from somewhere, which now make sense because ambient light bounce from the environment to the object, and light bounce from environment has the color of the environment.

I really like this video -- you are a phenomenal painter. Some of the fudging of physics in it was ...frustrating as someone who actually writes code for computer renderers. I also very much enjoy painting as a dialog with rendering, and I hope this can be a good resource for people getting introduced to the topic (I'll be sending it to some friends). If you'd ever like an intro to how renderers for videogames break down ambient and direct lighting (as well as tons and tons of other optical phenomena), and maybe chat about the physics and optics of what's going on with the light and in our eyes, say hi :)

2:30 color sample result of all kinds of ambient lights 3:50 hue can be whatever, 4:01 saturation was generally within mid to low range, 4:48Grays link colors together and make them feel harmonious 4:55 as a result painting ambient light can be fun and expressive 5:25 painting a white sphere INTO a environment 6:03 direct/key light will overpower ambient light, so none of those fun expressive wide hue range of grays are used here 6:25 skylight ambient light ====== HOW TO GET AMBIENT LIGHT FROM IMAGINATION BASED ON LOGICALLY THINKING ABOUT ENVIRINMENT AND KIGHT SOURCES - can use this method for getting the ambient light from sub lights as well, so a green bot L cheek light I can use that same light and paint a low opacity into the shadows and color lick from that to get a nice neutral green mixed into the skins current pool of neutrals 7:00 how does he choose his ambient blue light as it affects the shadow of the sphere? Technically glazing as he is using a generic blue with low opacity And from there he can color pick that color Whereas irl you need to glaze and then color match that by eye or know the color directly from ref or experience Or maybe just choose a generic blue but desaturate it and then dab it into the sphere and decide from there if you want it maybe slightly warmer or cooler A hit or miss but start in general ballpark type method ===== 8:05 last ambient light to add in 8:25 how to choose ambient light for bounce from ground path ==== 9:40 maybe even add in some green ambient light from trees ===== 10:39 for ambient occlusion, what color to select? Think logically of the environments lighting 11:00 he uses multiply so he can use the same low opacity method of getting in ambient light IRL you could prob glaze or thin down a darker color = need to be more conscious of the value of the color Or Have reference of what that type of environments ambient occlusion would look like ========= 11:10 ambient occlusion edges is very soft ======== 12:50 blender can calculate ambient light based on a panoramic photo So this is another way to get reference for key light and ambient light ======= @@@@@@Does he explain how to choose colors for when ambient light afffects an object with local color?@@@@ - Probably the same idea Low opacity brush over the material with the color of light from the surrounding environment light sources - And multiple for the shadows ---------------------- 15:59 3D render 16:20 painter imaginary method -Start with base local color - choose a shadow color by simply lower value since no ambient light yet - choose cast shadow value by choosing an in between hue of ground that cast shadow is on and move it towards the hue of the object? 16:27 - 16:27 getting the ambient light with diff method This time he uses logic, sample ten shadow color of ball, shift to green hue! Increase Val a touch for reflected light, don’t touch saturation, and then paint in low opacity ====== 16:55 when the local object color and reflected light are NOT next to each other And are instead 2-3 hues away from each other, then you don’t shift hue for ambient light Instead, to harmonize.... The color needs to travel towards gray and then through the hues toward the reflected laugh locsl hue 17:48 however if the local object color is more saturated in addition to being far from the hue of the reflected light local color Then it won’t even reach the hue of the reflected light, instead it wil, only go as far as the grayed 1st or 2nd hue next door, in its way toward the reflected lights hue 18:15 how to push the far hue bounce lights effect to look like it has more saturation, for aesthetic reasons ====== 18:40 decrease local color saturation to compare effects of ambient light in comparison to saturated local color 19:10) Less sat local colors can have greater ambient light hue variations because it can more easily make the trip to other colors, since weak saturation start point is toward the middle of the color wheel = why light skin can have so much hue variation in its ambient lights @ @ @ ================ @@@@@PAINTING SPHERE WITH LOCAL COLOR INTO ENVIRONMENT (no 3d help this time) @@@@@@@ 20:10 2 more examples of applying bg environment onto spheres - local color - key light/direct light (For sun increase value and shift to slgihtly warmer) for overcast day = all ambient light, no key 20:24 he used 3 passes to create sunlight, = higher value + warmer hue, then warmer hue because first pass didnt seem enough prob because doesnt "feel" like its temp matches the bg pic, finally pushing higher val + even warmer hue + lower sat because going higher in val tends to do that for the shadow he just lowered val of local color, didnt touch much else -20:35 for ambient light he just does the low opacity method again 21:05 the left side, because its all in ambient lgiht/ lightened shadow, the entire top of the sphere can receive the ambient blue light from the sky whereas on the left it was cut off by the sun keylight also during sunny days the sky is also bluer so inthe limted area of ambient blye lgiht, it is also stronger blue light -21:45 once this block in of fundamentals is done, the rest is just free for all ------------------------- 22:05 adding white strip on ball to showcase what a white ball would look like in comparsion ============== 22:48 going beyond sphere studies of ambient light dont study things with huge drawing work, so you can focus on the light and color 23:30 applying studies to imaginary study make a very obvious distinction of light and dark with strong key light so you know what is ambient and what is direct and focus on learning with baby steps first ================= 24:50 pushing ambient light comes when you understand ambient light more through study from irl ref

Man you have by far the best painting lessons on youtube. This is on par with James Gurneys color and light but even better because it's all video. Art schools should rent these lessons from you. Seriously impressive

putting this in a more mathematical / logical way made me finally understand it. im a very technical person, so when i hear other people explain shadows and light it comes off as "just do this because it looks right" and i dont get the technical explanation im looking for to actually understand WHY it happens so i can do it on my own.. this helped sooooo much because you gave essentially logical rational explanations for why to do this or that in a specific way instead of the "airy" OH because it seems right explanations

Marco this video is great, I'm so glad I've bought all your digital painting lessons from your site, you deserve it. I was sooo confused on how light worked, and in just a couple of videos you greatly cleared my mind! Thank you so much! There are so many artists that aren't willing to share knowledge even with payed content - and you're doing that for free! Thank you so much!

Lessen the intensity of light specially when light strike in a darker surface and bounce in lesser light strength.

For the longest time, all the colour theory videos I've seen felt like they were missing some kind of key ingredients. And it was so frustrating when my painting and the colours look fake or plastic. But THIS, along with you COLOUR HARMONY video is the clarity I've been waiting for.

Wow! This whole Ambient Occlusion series was just phenomenal! Jammed packed with information, covered everything in really clear language with great examples, in many different situations, throwing in different medias and your own approaches. So comprehensive and yet it wasn't long winded and easily digestible in just over an hour! Massive knowledge, eye opening boost for me. Suddenly colours and lighting makes sense. Simply wonderful!
