Agree, 30-30 will still live on, though I don't see much likelihood that 35 Rem leverguns would ever make a comeback now. In 360 Buckhammer you have a cartridge that is rimmed, more powerful than 35 Rem, and straight-walled--making it Midwest legal. 35 Rem is not rimmed (well, rebated rim like 308--but for the purposes of this argument, we'll say not rimmed), requiring it to have special consideration in leverguns. Honestly, 35 Rem in leverguns made no sense to me ever because 356 Winchester (30-30 necked to 358) was available. But either way, 360 Buckhammer will do for leverguns what 350 Legend did for modern sporting rifles. Millions of deer have already been taken with 350 Legend, I expect millions will fall to 360 Buckhammer over the next few years also.

Any of them would make a fantastic deer cartridge, and I own several of them, but I have no problem sticking with my old 35 Rem Marlin 336. You can talk numbers all day, but the in person eye test really tells the story so much better. The 35 Rem just hits like a train, and whatever is in its way never makes it more than a couple steps. I have always thought it has something to do with the ratios of velocity, weight, and bullet diameter that just make those certain cartridges hit that little bit harder or drop deer where they stand much more frequently than other cartridges, and 35 Rem is one of them

Idk. I've been doing a study for the past 20 years and it's still on going. I've used 36 different centerfire calibers. That includes every single one that he has in this comparison. Every single one killed deer. I have my favorites 450 bushmaster, 30 30, 350 legend. At least 5 deer with each caliber in 17 different states. I keep track of caliber, velocity, bullet type, shot placement and what happened after the shot. I've found the only guaranteed way to drop a deer is a high shoulder/spine shot. The next best thing is a really fast bullet that rapidly expands so much that it almost blows up and comes apart. This tends to cause so much trauma that it tends to just drop them from the shock. But thats just my data from 20 years and over 180 animals. I've literally put 2 inch holes in a deers heart and completely liquefied a deers lungs form that static shock of the round. The deer literally had no lungs. When field dressed it all just poured out on the ground and the dude still went 80 yards. Then again I've shot several with 17 rem and they just dropped. You never know what gonna happen with a perfect heart lung shot. They drop sometimes and sometimes they run. But I've never had one round with any caliber from a high shoulder shot. Just my opinion from the data I've been keeping a record of. If anyone is interested the worst caliber so far is 30 06. 6 deer shot and 2 have managed to go over 50 yards before dieing. 2 went 20 yards. And 2 were dropped All perfect heart shots/or spine shots. The 2 that dropped were spine shots. All deer recovered and died withing 5 seconds so that tells you a lot. The worst performer in my study is still a killing machine. That's how lethal almost all centerfire rifles are. We often blame losing deer on the cartridge but I've found its often not it's a bad shot. I've had friends swear to me they made a perfect shot. He was never using 6.5 again. Only later after tracking for 3 hours to find they literally shot 18 inches back in the guts. Sorry this just went on and on. Just some info for anyone wanting to ponder some stuff in their minds.

The 350 Legend is the bolt action version of the 30-30, and legal in straight wall cartridge states. The 350 Legend is available in bolt action rifles which are cheaper than lever action rifles and inherently more accurate. And like the 30-30, the ammo is cheap and widely available. Neither kick much but are plenty powerful enough for deer, hogs and black bear. That's why the 350 Legend is very popular, and no only in straight wall cartridge states. Thanks for another great video.

Don't understand on why all these other gun companies don't make these new calibers in all model guns from pumps, lever actions, to semi auto etc... for what a particular person wants. Not everyone wants an ar-15 or bolt action or single shot style. If I was an CEO in 1 of these gun companies I would be jumping on this part of it.

Interesting chart. Hunting here in NH I’ve never had a shot over 60 yards in 30 years of hunting. In fact most of the deer I’ve taken were within 30 yards of me. Bottom line is for me my Remington 760 pump in 35 REM is more than sufficient for deer hunting. A friend of mine borrowed it years ago to drop a bull moose. Anyhow, I won’t be purchasing a new 360 buckhammer rifle cuz I Don’t need one. Looks like a good cartridge for the straight wall states. I’ve actually been hunting with 7.62x39 last few years. Cheap cartridge and works great on white tails. Keep up the good work and videos. Thanks.

Good information! I appreciate your efforts for those of us required to use straight wall cartridges. I agree with you about shooting distances for clean kills. I’ve never killed a deer beyond 150 yards. Long distance shots where I hunt are hard to find. The chart shows everyone what they need to know. I knew my 450 Bushmaster would drop like a stone but could be very effective at shorter distances. The Buck Hammer and the 30 30 are close just remember only one can legally hunt in straight wall states. I don’t feel threatened by any cartridge on here . I come away knowing the 360 Buck Hammer, the 350 legend and the 450 will work for me. Good video!

If you have been hunting for 45 years and never had to track a deer with your 35 then you must be the best shot in the entire world or are the luckiest sob on the planet. It doesn't matter what caliber you shot eventually you are going to have to track a deer they all do not drop in their tracks. I hate to say it but I call bullshit. My uncle got back from WWII and purchased a Marlin 336 with 2 boxes of shells from Flint hardware for $26.00 He gave me that rifle along with a 300 Savage 99 he purchased for $31.00 with 2 boxes of shells from the same hardware store. I had won a 300 Weatherby from a DU banquet and wanted to shoot a deer with it. Opening day bang and the dang thing ran 100 yards into a cedar swamp..... go figure. I was thinking the 300 WBY mag was going to drop, cut and wrap the deer with 1 shot. Second day of season I grabbed the 35 REM and did a little still hunting along the railroad grade. Had a nice buck come out and put the glass on him and spotted a nice drop tine. Looked like a pretty far shot so I held a little high knowing the bullet drop and squeezed the trigger knowing it'd be a good hit or a clean miss with him quartering towards me. The shot dropped him in a pile where he stood. Absolutely impressed the heck out of me coming from a old $26.00 rifle!

The only problem is if you know about 350 legend, which I do, quite a few others do as well, the 180 is not the bullet of choice, especially amongst those of us who reload! Try looking at the numbers for the hornady interlock soft nose, 170 grain bullet. That’s the one that was used to get the North American grand slam pushed by IMR 4227 Powder lol! The new 360 duplicates the Rem. but with a 100+ fps boost. I’ve seen both loaded rounds, and Rem. uses the identical bullet for both 200 gr. rounds. Combined with how popular and effective it’s going to become in the straight wall states, I think it will be here to stay, and the 360 is a great round!

This was really good information. I like the looks of the 360 Buckhammer. I have been looking for a rifle that could push a 200 + grain bullet with good short to medium-range ballistics. It looks like the 360 Buckhammer fills that space. I viewed a video of a person shooting through the brush to see how vegetation affected the impact on a 50-yard line-of-sight target. Regardless of the round, it appears that a 200 + grain bullet was able to defeat most vegetation allowing an impact on the target. Bullets of lower grain weight and/or higher velocity were deflected at a rate that made those choices of rounds undesirable for hunting in the brush. The 170-grain 3030 round showed a deflection of an amount that was concerning. Anything firing a 200 + grain bullet showed minimal deviation resulting in potential kill strikes. Pack on the fact this is a straight-walled cartridge and you have a brush gun for all states; WOW!

Awesome information and great video as always!!!! But all these guns are way more capable with the right reloads. For instance my 350 legend with 170 Gr bullet shoots 2360 at the muzzle and keeps more energy at every level than the 30-30. You use the right powder you don’t get pressure signs in fact this is a middle of the range load. At 200 yards my legend only has 6.4 inches of drop and 1350 flbs of energy. At the muzzle is shooting 2360 and 2060 energy. This is a flat shooter period.

As a few noted, this is a good cartridge for straight walled cases states. As many don't see is most of the cartridges like the 45-70 are too long for some states. These states require straight wall cases 1.8 inches long. Others bottle neck cases are ok, but still need to be 1.8 8nches long. There are lever guns made in straight wall cases 1.8 inches long or less that might be worth looking into. The 500 and 460 SW come to mind. These loads listed are factory loads. With the 35 Rem, warmed up hand loads can match or slighter better the 360 BH. In the states where the necked 1.8 8nch case rule is in effect, they trim the 35R case to 1.8, load the coal to match the 35 R. They then warm the loads up and get very good results. If you don't live in a state with such restrictions, great, use what you have. I live in a state without such restrictions yet. I have a 1894 in 44 Mag. Great short range rifle. For where I can shoot longer ranges I have bolt guns in cartridges capable of the needed performance. Several of the cartridge on the list where designed not so much to fit these restrictions but they do. They were designed to fit the AR-15 style rifles action length. They can be found in bolt guns as well. I have often thought that re barreling a 30-30 to a 35-30, or with a full length straight case. Similar to the 375, just in 35cal. This would be easier to find jacketed bullets for than the 375. Not many makers make them any more. This 35-30 should exceed the performance of the 360 H by a significant amount. Perhaps nearing the 358 W. This would extend the range by 100yds, or a bit more. It would have a bit more recoil than the 360 but be les than cartridges like the 45-70, 444, 375. Maybe even handle heavier bullets up to 250grs or more. Be real thumper on game large than deer.

I’ve also recently started hunting with my 45-70 and within the primarily 100 yards or less where I hunt, 45-70 is just about perfect. I’m sure.360 Buckhammer is great. But right now I am good with what I got. Same with 6.5 Creedmoor. My cousin swears by it and thinks I am rediculous for not buying one. But I have still killed more deer with my trusty .270 Winchester.

Your cousin will eventually mature and see a bigger picture within ballistics and firearms trends. Nothing new is being created, for the most part. Just new people getting into a game that's been around a very long time. New stuff is smokeless powders and bottleneck casings and high strength steels, or the ability to measure bullet flight with radar. Nothing else is inherently new. Even with all the whizz bang bullet shapes and polymer and extruded chassis, there will be people shooting slow and heavy blunt nosed bullets plowing through bones and tissues like they always have.

So thankful I DON’T live in a straight wall cartridge state, but if they allowed a .444 Marlin, I’d find one not made during the Remington years. That’s a no-brainer for a grown man but if recoil is an issue that 350 Legend is pretty dang efficient. Can’t wait to sight in my Leupold compact 20mm scope my wife just got my Marlin 35 rem for Christmas! That’s my favorite woods gun for sure. If I need to hunt in the rain or shoot farther than 100 yds I’ll take my 308 or my 270. Can’t wait to hear from Midway USA when their Federal HammerDown 35 rem comes in! That’s Federal Premium ammo for the 35 Rem w/ 220 gr. boo-lots!

You already know that I recently (last September) moved to Ohio and would like to get at least one straight wall cartridge rifle. Probably an inexpensive AR 15 or bolt action (preferably left hand) in 350L, 400L, or 450 BM then save up for a lever gun in 360 Buckhammer 🦌🔨 (preferably when Henry chambers it in their All Weather). 😎🇺🇸

35 Remington is a pretty underrated deer cartridge. South west PA I’ve used a marlin 336 with a 2-7 redfield for 15 years. I load a Speer 180 grain at 2300 fps and it knocks deer down! I really wish they would quit making new cartridges that do the same thing and just make ammunition/reloading supplies for stuff that’s been around. I don’t see why the straight wall states couldn’t just give a list of cartridges you can use and allow the 30-30 and 35 Remington. It’s not like they are laser beams by any means compared to the 350 legend.

While the .35 Remington was designed for a purpose, the .360 Buckhammer will always be a reminder to Americans how their 2nd Amendment rights are being trampled.

The Buckhammer loaded with a Hornady 200 grain FTX (pointed bullet), at velocity of 2200 fps.... in a singleshot or in a lever action...... it sounds like the PERFECT deer hunting combo! I typically use round nose in my 35 Remington or my 356 Winchester.... but use that particular Hornady FTX bullet at that velocity, should be best. The Hornady 200 gr. FtX bullet was tested in my 358 Winchester at 2500 fps. and it exploded too much. Reducing the velocity down to 2100 or 2200, proved to be the best and maximum velocity to get GREAT expansion, penatration.... without bullet "explosition".

At some point I will buy an AR15 style rifle with various caliber uppers. Such as 350 Legend, 6 ARC, and 6.5 Grendel. But I look forward to a Henry 360 Buckhammer. I'm not sure what formula you are using to compute the muzzle energy of your various cartridges. The formula I use to compute energy at the muzzle would be: velocity squared x mass /450,240. Using this formula the 180 gr Buck Hammer would have ME of 2303 ft.lbs. (V)2400 x 2400 = 5,760,000 x (M)180 = 1,036,800,000/450,240 = 2302.77. The 450,240 is the constant similar to pi in determining circular circumference. Downrange energy can be computed if you know the velocity of the bullet at varying yardages. Please, if anyone knows better than I, I ask you to let me know. Sometimes I'm not as intelligent as I think I am. (Just ask my wife.) However, I've used this formula to compute energy on various rounds where the manufacturer has published the G1 ballistics and they are always the same. I use this same formula in my reloading endeavors. Also, unfortunately Remington under powers their .35 Remington rounds as do Winchester and Federal. I'm not sure why but it may because of people still using the Remington Model 8 or some of the older leveractions with less modern builds. Hornady kicks up the performance of the .35 Rem some with their Leverevolutions loading. Published muzzle velocity of the 200 gr Leverevolution is 2250 with ME of 2249 vs. the Remington 200 grain ME of 1980. I think that's a significant difference. That's a 12% increase in power and with a better BC. I fully expect Hornady to jump into the Buck Hammer game using their already available 200 grain FTX bullet with the polymer tip for tubular magazines. I appreciate all you do in educating us about the .350 Legend and .360 Buck Hammer. When Remington is selling a ton of 360 ammo and Henry is making a ton of money building their rifle for this new round I think they should thank you for all you do making sure people who hunt and shoot and love firearms in general know all there is to know.

Since I have very, very little chance of hunting deer or hogs in a straight wall cartridge state I will stick with my .30-30s, my favorite of all lever gun cartridges a .35 Remington, and for that slim chance of hunting in a straight wall state my beloved .444 Marlin launching 265grn SJRNSPs. I COULD be talked into a .36 BMHR, if a state ruled the .444 Marlin to be a tapered cartridge, but most likely I'd have to go with a lever gun chambered in .45-70 with "warmish" handloads and 350ish grain SJRNSPs.

So, given that some consider 1000 ft lbs the min for deer, ALL these but the hot 45-70 are 150 yd deer guns. #1, They are woods guns, not open prairie antelope guns. #2, Fast handling short lever actions with open or peep sights work really well for such woods hunting. #3, Trajectories are flat enough for such hunting to 150 yards with a 100 -125 yd zero. Conclusion, The old timer deer hunters knew what they were doing. Jerry

HW. Thanks for the video. A thing I wonder about when you do comparisons with the 45-70, I wonder what kind of load you are using. In my experience, the 45-70 cowboy loads are the bottom of the heap in terms of power.... even though that load killed LOT's of bison. Even the standard pressure Remington are pretty weak compared to say... a typical 30-06 load. However, I also have 45-70 loads that - if I shoot them sitting on a rest - I need to see the chiropractor the next day as they are approaching 4k f.p.e. So, I would appreciate it if you identified the loads you are shooting, particularly with the 45-70. Thanks.

.375 and .38-55 are pretty cool stuff. Why the .38-55 has hung around in new chambers (Winchester, Henry) and .375 went away? Beats me. I know Buffalo Bore makes a stout .38-55. The advantages with these medium-large bore cartridges is a carry-over philosophy from the black powder era: Can't increase pressure due to BP limitations and steel integrity limitations (in the late 1800's), so increase bullet density. These don't have a lot of speed, but they have a lot of penetration performance due to their sectional density and high momentum numbers. Too much focus is given to bullet drop and windage these days, probably due to a lack of rifleman skill to compensate. Very low-drag bullets are all the rage. If a rifleman can guide a bullet to the intended target no matter how much it drops or blows sideways, who cares about anything except how it performs terminally?

@Lifted_Above I've grown to love the .375. Being an avid handloader for many years and a bullet caster made using an obsolete caliber a non issue for me. The ballistics of the .375 are excellent plus it's putting out 50,000 plus psi.

And 35 Rem its 1 of my favorite deer calibers to. But if Frank Hamer was still around with us and he lived or hunted in an restricted deer hunting zone in 1 of those states now days, my guess is Hamer probably approve with this new 360 Buck-hammer caliber, since Hamer he mostly was more of an 35 Rem and even somewhat of a 30-30 guy.

It seems to me by the information on this chart that velocity has everything to do with the drop. The BC doesn't mean anything here really. One thing I find interesting is the 170 grain 30-30 only drops a little less than an inch more than the 150 grain bullet at 200 yards but I would assume the 170 grain bullet at that range would produce more energy.
