A lot of commenters missed the "compliance parameters" of the 360 Buckhammer's design. If 30-30, or 35 Remington, is legal where one hunts, the 360 Buckhammer offers little, but if one wishes to hunt with an actual rifle instead of a rifle barreled shotgun in many places, the Buckhammer is a viable option, but not the only one.

35 Remington for 35 years has never let me down. Interesting how In the comparison it falls behind. It's my favorite cartridge of all time... will never give up on her.

I'm right there with you, die hard fan of the 35 Remington. A bunch of deer and feral hogs never complained about the 200 gr RN. Interesting thing, I got my Marlin 336 in 35R about 35 years ago too.

I will also add that it's very cool they're making the buck hammer. It's an amazing round and is great for us reloaders as the 35 Remington uses the same projectile. Hornady Interlock for me btw.

My 350 Legend is perfect for me. Smack like a truck, super light recoil, drops them hard. I just can't move from a 30-30 to buckhammer. Some traditions can't be broken.

Awesome video and I wish more people would see this video. “Knock Down Power” is such a Mythical Idea. Too much TV Special Effects has too many people thinking Bullets just Blow things off their feet.

Ron even cowrie an article on this very subject and the TKO methodology which is abused often was discussed. Taylor's Knock Out formula was just what it sounds like, a calculation for estimating the ability of head shots from various calibers to temporarily knock out a large pachyderm when the brain was missed. "Since he was mainly interested in ivory hunting, Taylor was concerned about the concussion effect of various cartridges on head-shot elephants when the brain itself was missed. The 200 grain CoreLokt in the .35 Remington has been a proven deer slayer for many , many years . That bullet in the .35 never fails to perform perfectly . I think the 360 Buckhammer shooting a 200 grain CoreLokt a bit faster than the 'ol .35 Rem. will prove to be the best of all the new cartridges .

Amen! I dearly love my old Marlin SC in .35 Rem., but an ‘updated’ .35 with a little more pep in the Buckhammer, along with that sweet new Henry rifle, is mighty tempting! The .35 with the 200 gr Core-Locts has never failed on a few deer and a bunch of big wild hogs here in Fla.!

@@ev3dale298 the bushmaster recoil isn’t bad? I wonder how it compares recoil wise to a 30-06, that’s what I use for all my hunting but have been looking for a less common caliber in my next rifle and 450 bushmaster sounds interesting.

Remington loads are notorious for not meeting their advertised velocities. The Hornady LeverEvolution loads with the flex tip bullet safe for shooting in a tubular magazine are far superior. The LeverEvolution has made legitimate two hundred yard cartridges out of the 30-30 Winchester, 35 Remington, 444 Marlin and 45-70 Gov’t. Probably somewhat farther with a good scope. If I was forced to hunt with a straight walled cartridge I’m going with my 444 or 45-70. I love the Henry rifles but the price is really high for something you’re not going to be able to use for much larger critters. Why not buy a used 444 Marlin or 45-70 so that you could use it for elk, moose or caribou? You might have some money left over for ammunition.😊

@@daveyboy728 I'm 6'1 and 250lb... I've used my 30-06 bolt action for about 30 years now. I ordered the Henry 360 BH when it came out and picked it up a couple of months ago. The 30-06 rattles my teeth with each shot and will bruise my shoulder when having too much fun at the range. The 360 BH is much more civilized. I ran a box through it when sighting it in (that took all of 5 rounds) with no discomfort at all. I would have shot another box through it if I had one at the time... Just my opinion, but if you're in a "straight wall" state or just looking for a new lever gun, the Henry 360 BH is a great choice that will stack up with anything in hunting camp.

I love all the numbers, but at the end of the day the only thing that matters is terminal ballistics and the 35 Remington has proven over and over how well it does that’s not always the fastest cartridge that has the best effect in the woods. I do agree with some earlier posts that it’s likely a marketing gimmick to get something more in the AR platform, which is fine but the 35 rem is awesome.

The Hornady round for the 35 Remington does 2225 fps and 2198 me, with a 200 grain FTX bullet. The older cartridges are all much better with modern loads.

New cartridges exist only to sell rifles and handguns. There hasn't been a cartridge introduced in the last 25 years which is overwhelmingly superior to anything which went before.

You are correct. I hunt in Lower Michigan. I already have a Marlin 444- not allowed for too long of a case length. I needed something that reached out a little further than my 44mag. 30-30 has a tapered case (not allowed), so bought a 360 buckhammer. Henry sold me a new gun because I couldn't use my 444.

a side note for the 35 Remington - the original published factory load was 200gr at 2180 ....then somewhere over the years dropped to 2080 fps...now Hornady is 2200 fps. I know the vid is about straight wall cartridge, but 35 Remington can go from mild to wild with handloading

Depends on barrel length on “marketing” velocity numbers as well. I load a max book load using 40 grains of varget along with a cast hollow point in my 35 Rem. It averages 2100 fps out of my Chronograph out of a 20” 336 barrel. I also get 2450 fps using 180 grain speer hot cores hand loaded an about a half grain over max book load with zero pressure signs out of a 18.5” barrel. I’ll take the 35 Rem over both.

I don’t know where you get the 35 Rem numbers but the 200 grain core locts are listed at 2100fps. 180 grain ammo is listed 2350 to 2450fps.

Imo the buck hammer is marketing Gimmic velocities. Seems everyone testing them on chronographs on KZbin aren’t getting anywhere near quoted velocities listed vs the manufactures numbers. Still would be a nice AR round.

@@tripplebeards3427 I said 'the original published factory load was 200gr at 2180'....I'm not sure which manual it was but I collect alot of old reloading manuals and old info in general and I feel like it was an older Speer manual referencing the 'factory load'. I didnt have the greatest luck with Varget and 200grs. H-335 has been really great as well as IMR3031and Leverevolution will EASILY get you 2200fps with a 200gr. I shoot alot of cast too and IMR4198 and Reloder 7 are worth a look. Also I'm shooting a Marlin 336 so I feel I can get things a bit hotter than I will shoot in my old 1949 Remington 141 with the 24 inch barrel. If you can track down an old 141 in good shape its a pretty accurate shooter - not sure if its the 24in barrel or because it was made in 1949 when they made everything better lol

Sorry, but I am going to be the old sourdough who refuses to change!!!! The 30-30 has never failed me so I see no reason to change now. To me it is a very capable brush gun for deer hunting. Knowing it's limitations is the key to using the 30-30. I have shot deer out to 100 yards with the 30-30 with no problem. Great video as always.

Exactly when you are hunting in Pennsylvania all deer shots are under 100 yards. Most are 100 feet.

What you say is very true, but the advantage of the straight walled cartridges is that you can take the rifle to other States. If you stay in your own States, fine, but some are lucky enough to get tags in other States.

I hunt in the eastern Adirondacks of NYS. The main reason I carry my grandfather’s Winchester 94 in .30-30 (it has “.30 WCF” on the barrel) is that it’s so light and handy on drives that aren’t flat, to put it mildly. Most shots are under 100 yards. A .30-30 is ideal; I’m also going to be using a Henry in .44 Magnum this season. If I were to see a .360 Buckhammer in my LGS, I don’t know what I would do. Maybe. If I could get it into the house without my wife seeing it …

To me, this video demonstrates the wider array of cartridges and calibers. Most bullets are versatile enough to bleed into other realms of capabilities that many rifles offer virtually the same thing. But its the features, the build quality, and the dynamics of each cartridge and rifle that each shooter prefers to hone makes the diversity of shooting so wonderful.

I hand load the 35 Remington with 180 gr bullets and get a chronographed velocity of 2400 fps. Just depends on the powder you use.

While I love your videos and advice, as well as that from Adam (Who Tee Who) and Jim Harmer (Backfire), being from Michigan I want to clear up what seems to be a misconception. Michigan does NOT require that you hunt with straight-wall cartridges, statewide. Previously, we had a "shotgun boundary" which is a line about halfway up the "mitten" from the wrist, is you will. You could only hunt with a shotgun below that line. That line still exists but, you can now hunt with a shotgun OR straight-wall cartridges. Above this line, you can hunt with anything you choose. Above that line, I hunt with 30-30, 25-06, 308, 30-06, 270 or even 6.5 Creedmoor.

Being from michigan, I want to say, that since we can hunt from tree stands during the gun season, the blue line is useless. If you are shooting down then it does not matter what kind of round youre useing. The bullet is gonna hit the ground.

@@easttexan2933 the "line" was created decades ago, primarily based on population. North of that (arbitrary and imaginary) line, population is not as dense. Therefore, hunters can use just about anything - 30-06, 7mm Rem Mag, 270 Win, etc. There is also a higher tree and cover density so, a projectile is less likely to travel as far, regardless of the cartridge. South of that line, the opposite is true and still so today. Hope that helps clarify. But to your point, yes, politics is also to blame.

There's a newer new straight wall in a prototype configuration called the 41GI coming out of Michigan it's advertised to shoot a range of bullet grain options and packs a punch that are close to a 300 win mag 150 gr is pushing 2900fps.

Ron, thanks for all the content you have been putting out the last few years; I find it enjoyable to watch. All you folks quit arguing over the new introductions being unnecessary. They may be - but nobody is forcing you to buy something to replace what you have. It is fun to "argue/debate" the merits over what is best or what works. I for one am glad that new things continue to be brought to market. Instead of Ford vs. Chevy vs. Dodge or the like, enjoy both instead of disparaging the other. Kind of like surf and turf, not one or the other or gentlemen prefer blondes and redheads and brunettes. Peace out.

Mr. Spomer, I appreciate you sharing your experiences, opinions and wisdom. I am currently serving in the US Army in Germany and began listening to your podcasts while in Poland last year. With hunting and shooting opportunities limited in Germany, your content has given me an outlet until I get back to the states. I also appreciate the way you address sometimes combative or otherwise less than cordial commentors with a level headed response. The world needs more of that. QUESTION: I was recently watching a KZbin video on barrel selection and the gentleman speaking mentioned "gain twist". This got me wondering, is there such a thing as variable (gaining) twist rates in rifling? Would such a thing have any effect on barrel life, accuracy or heat distribution in a rifle barrel? Lastly, has this ever been done to your knowledge? Thanks again for the great content!

I think I found my first lever gun top pick honestly the straight wall cartridge helped with that decision because it allows me to hunting in the states that only allow those kinds of bullets but I still feel confident using it back home and I've always wanted a lever gun so this fists all my wants and needs

It's always been my belief that a bullet that goes in and out causes damage but a bullet that enters and stops transfers all that energy into the animal,I honestly believe that's why the 35 Remington kill's so fast the deer or hog eats that energy

Unless you handload, good luck finding 360 in any gun shops. The 30-30 stands on it's reputation and ammo is readily available, and has taken more deer than the 360!!!

I’m a Ohio deer hunter I’ll be straight up I live in a thick area of Ohio I live on the border of wv and let me say this this lever gun or 45/70 is the best guns to use the longest shots you will get around here if your lucky is 200 yards try shooting a 243 or 30-06 in this area it’s hard you do get pastures to but the longest they are like 300 yards so I think stick with straight wall or shot guns …

@@Redneckgamer-do1uinothing wrong with using a bottle neck cartridge in the woods, here in northern MN where most shots could be made with a pointy stick 30-06, 270, and 243 are some of the most popular choices. Wife took hers last year with a 6.5 creedmore shooting federal terminal ascent at maybe 10 yards, performed flawlessly. There’s no downside to having more range available then required.

​@Alan.livingston come for a holiday to Australia and shoot as many as you want. Here they're an invasive species and most have no bag limit or season. They're such a problem that as well as all the state forest you can hunt the government opened up loads of national park to hunters. Around my way the only restriction is minimum calibre for certain species, .243 for fallow deer and .270 for sambar. I run a 30-06 bolt and a 30-30 lever as I mainly hunt sambar.

Arkansas just changed our rules so you can use straight walls during the newly converted alternative firearms season and Im trying to start hunting Only have a revolver at the moment so considering getting a lever action since I could use it in what used to be muzzleloader season and modern gun

I love the 30-30 so much, if Pennsylvania outlawed it for hunting. First there would probably be a revolt. Not just by me . Ide quit my job and move to a state where i could hunt with it. 30-30 is one of the most popular rifle round in Pennsylvania. My whole family hunts with the 30-30. The meat pole is usually full After first day of deer season. Awsome video. God bless.

Some my family's Winchester are almost 100 years old and still killing deer. Mine was grandpaps and it was made in 1909. I still wear his woolrich coat. I'm 56. So it's probably almost 100 years old. You can have all the new fancy hunting stuff. I'll stick with my family's heritage. I'll bet my 30-30 has taken deer every year since I owned it. I shot my first deer at 10 years old. I killed 2 moose with it in Alaska. I'm and old fashioned hunter born a century too late. To each his own God bless.

I also have my great grandpaps 1894 32-40 it was made in 1898. I know the dates because I sent Winchester a letter years ago and the wrote me back. And this rifle is a black powder barrel. Winchester actually gave me the load data for safe smokeless powder for this rifle. It's amazing accurate. These rifles mean so much that they are willed to the next generation after me.

300 gr cast lead? I think RCBS has a 250 gr mould, but that would still be supersonic. At 1200 fps that is only 804 ft lb. 300 gr would get you up to almost 1000 ft lb. Lyman has a 335 gr bullet for the 38-55, so something similar should be doable in .358.

I used to own and handload the 356 Winchester .. which is a child of the 358 Winchester.. but had a semi-rimmed case and the bullet seated a bit deeper … to operate in a 94 BB & 336 action it operated at 52,000 PSI .. which to me was a bit much for the 336 action ,, but was OK in the beefed up 94 Big Bore action… It seems to be similar to the 360 BH … problem was … most bullets specifically designed for the 35 Rem didn’t perform in game as well as I expected… cept for two Speer bullets.. the 180 & 220gr FN bullets As for the 30-30 .. it works .. works well … The 350 Legend with the 170gr Hornady bullet seems to have a great reputation.. for deep penetration.. The .355 bullet of the 350 L was specifically designed to operate at 350 L velocities, similar to the 30-30 … and Id be surprised if the 400 L doesn’t perform well on game … As far as I can see the 350 seems to get it done with less fuss Its not how fast the bullet goes , But how it functions ( expands and penetrates) at certain velocities

It seems like a good design for a specific need. If the length limits were more generous in the straight wall states, we could have a revival of the 38-55😁. Been wanting one. I don't need a modern straight wall- Kalifornia has no such regs, and I don't really hunt anyway. One of the few good things about the state. However, i have been wanting at least one Henry, so who knows. Although i would probably get a 45-70 (i don't want the shiny 38-55; that will be a semi-vintage Winchester). This comparison between all of the new, "state specific boutique", cartridges and the "old reliables" is definitely the kind of video that I had been hoping that you would produce. I do like the new cartridges for their uniqueness and their ability to fill a legal niche and I am glad that they will allow hunters (midwest/ rust belt, I assume) to get better performance in the woods than what they would have previously under the same conditions. That being said, however, and now becoming a bit of a FUD and having the Old Army Captain come out in me that insists on logistical considerations driving most decision-making, I don't think that I would be purchasing one of these new rifles/ cartridge combos unless I moved into one of those states. And, besides, the only other rifle that I have EVER killed big/ medium game with other than the .30-30 is the .50 caliber Hawken muzzleloader, even here on the Plains of the Texas Panhandle where ranges can get really wide in a hurry, so why change (not that anyone is advocating that here) if I am getting performance (I guess that I am just getting a little weary of the looks I get when I show up to hunt with my 336 or 30AS, both proven killers [I've even been disallowed from hunts because that is what I chose to use])? At any rate, I do enjoy the presentation format of these videos and the ballistics science that is almost always presented (I'll now be zeroing my .30-30s this year at 150-160 for the optimal point-blank holds because of these videos).

@@nuckyduk15 The "Old Outdated Crap" 30-30 which is used as the yardstick to measure the effectiveness of these new "modern wizzbangs" is for all practical purposes the equal of any of them. Look at the ballistic charts of 150 yard energy Ron is showing here. The design goal with these straight wall cartridges is to try to equal these old classics. They really gain you nothing if you don't live in a state restricting you from using one of the old classics. They DO make you vulnerable to ammo becoming obsolete in a few years as only so many cartridges can become popular. Now if you load your own ammo and do a lifetime buy of brass when you buy the rifle, you are good to go.

When I first heard of the 369 Buckhammer I was excited to either buy or have built a single shot in the 360. After months of looking for ammo and none was to be found, I gave up and decided to stick with a shotgun and muzzleloader. Two weeks ago I finally saw a box of 360s. Regrettably I think Remington has done it again, designed a good cartridge and abandoned it. Someday these companies will understand that if the rifle and the ammo are not announced and available immediately it will fail. Hope I'm wrong, but the 360 is already a failed cartridge.

Southeast Missouri doesnt have the best bucks, but we dont have the weird limitations on the necks. Saying that, I'll try the 360 because my longest shot in the woods was about 30 yards.

If I was forced to hunt with a straight walled case, I would pick my old .38-55 Winchester 1894 and hunt with that, because that round with a 255 grain JSP or in the case of my handloads, a 264 cast lead bullet, I know that would work, and if that one doesn't, I have a .45-70 and then the real slayer, my Cimarron 1863 Sharps carbine in .50-70. Lots of other options out there before you have to try and hunt down the .360 which where I am, is as hard to find as .35 Remington.

Both of those have cases too long for some areas. The strictest states limit cases to 1.8". That is the market that the 360 Buckhammer, 350 Legend and 400 Legend were designed for.

Being in a state that you have to hunt striaght wall, and not having a striaght wall other then a 12 guage slug, it’s not bad to have new rounds to choose from but still agree, ammo is hard to find for these guns a lot of the time or expensive

If I had to hunt an area where straight walled cartridges was the law, I would choose the 360 Buckhammer for myself. I would choose the 350 Legend for a young boy or avg female. Only caution would be is wondering if the 360 BH will survive the test of time. So far the 350 L is looking as it will. For now I don’t have a need for either cartridge so I will stick with my .33 Winchester.
