Thank you for this clarification! For some reason I was thinking it meant 360 degrees period from breaker box to outlet, and was trying to figure out how that could possibly be right in more complex arrangements.

Dustin, Although 100% correct, NEC panel needs to make an exception to the rule. If newer insulation like Southwire sim pull is utilized, then more degrees allowed. Second exception. More degrees allowed with engineering pull calculation performed and on site for inspector's review if requested. I did conduit layouts in 3D for 15,000 sq ft electrical room with 5.5 miles of 3-1/2" EMT with (4) 900Kcmil compact Al and ground. The electricians pulled right through the "required" pull boxes and through at least 630 degrees bend. Did pull calls. No where near allowed stress or sidewall pressures for damage. Respectfully, Kevin

Love a bit of metal conduit! In the UK we don’t do so much of it apart from when customers want a kind of “industrial” look but it’s great fun and takes quite some skill to work with. We have the same rule in the UK. Thanks for your great content as always!

Nice man, pretty much all commercial and industrial jobs here are ran in conduit. It pretty fun sometimes figuring out a tricky bend and then watching it come together perfectly. Currently we’re working on a job where we’re running over 15,000 ft of conduit. It’s a good time!
@inspector85722 жыл бұрын
I hear you constantly referring to the NEC or “CODE” and that’s good but it’s the minimum safety requirement but often falls short of the AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction)… These are water / wastewater plants, electric Power plants, as well as a few other government installations. Specifically the 360° rule would equal a rejection at the AHJ / WTP) I was employed as an inspector at set their maximum allowable to 270°. Furthermore all runs had to be parallel or perpendicular to the building lines and grades… so ONLY if the building had a O/S in it then the conduit not only could but had to also conform to those lines. This was almost all heavy industrial so generally no EMT except in office building. Car flex, Liquid Tight , etcetera was limited to a max 6ft at equipment entrances only. Some conduit runs were special runs that required corrosion resistance as well as shielding so standard galvanized steel or PVC conduit was out. My point is a rookie mistake would be a journeyman whom worked in other settings where code is the minimum standard would possibly loose their company big $$$$$ by approaching all jobs with the mindset of only doing what the “CODE” minimally required and failed to incorporate the standards required by the AHJ.

Thank you for that last bit, I just took a basic electrical residential wiring course, and I kept wondering whether the 360 degree limit applied to ONLY bends in the same direction, if somehow bends in the opposite direction canceled them out. Math was always my thing in school 👍 thanks again!

@goaliedude324 жыл бұрын
don't do it .
@nickg13074 жыл бұрын
Romex is NM.... And as far as Romex in EMT, it doesn't matter. You're not pulling Romex through a EMT raceway, so therefore it is used as protection and pipe fill does not factor. Pipe fill only counts for raceways, meaning you ran any type of conduit from the panel all the way to the device, that is a raceway and no one is ever going to pull Romex through a raceway. But if, lets say you work residential and you run Romex down am unfinished basement wall, you can literally cram as much Romex as you can fit, because it is only used for protection of the Romex down the wall. Code does not specify how much wire can be fit into a pipe used as protection, same thing if you use a "chase" or "nipple" under 24" in length. There are no pipe fill requirements.

Everyone has bills to pay. Take the money! I remember this information differently. I would have sworn the code was 270 degrees ( when I was a contractor years ago). I've also found that you can barely get just a pull string to move through 360. Has that portion of the coffee been revised during the past 20 years?

That's almost common sense. The more bends you have between any 2 pull points, the more friction you have on the conductors. If you cannot avoid having more bends, you can use a larger size conduit. But that's rarely the case.

i am an oilfield guy that has only dealt with teck cables, explosion proof fittings, seals, and boxes and all that jazz. i got a job for hospital construction in 2014 and that was the first time i have ever ran EMT pipe, was good times. got to do door security which was 1/2 inch, and tons of 3/4 and 1 inch, some 1 1/4, 1 1/2, 2, and also the 4 inch EMT from the main MCC to all the other electrical rooms with 4 inch. I didn't enjoy that big pipe too much, found the bender didn't bend the same amount every time but i guess it wasn't the worst thing i have ever done. Finished the job two years later and haven't bent any pipe since. we always had the oilfield buldings prefabricated so i never got to do any rigid. that stuff is a bit harder since you need to thread the pieces together. i installed a lot of straight pieces to finish the prefab on the outside but that doesn't even count.

That’s an easy fix, just add a box If you fuck up. Use a bandsaw to cut two sides of the pop after your measurements, two connectors, and good placement for the pull can.

Hey man im running a sub panel on this commercial job and ive got to get into the main disconnect/switch board. Does this rule apply all the way up to 2 1/2" pipe and 4 4/0 conductors? I will install a pull station if i have to but i really wanted to do it in one run
@spudatbattleaxe5 жыл бұрын
Noah Newsome yep, applies even more so with larger sized wire. You don’t want to be pulling that without a pull box

@glenjamindle5 жыл бұрын
@@noahnewsome2050 We used a D80 tow behind compressor to blow a mouse with a string, then pulled a small rope through, then pulled a large rope through. We hooked a pulley to an excavator boom and pulled back the rope with a skid steer. We hand fed the MV into the 6". 4 4/0 isn't a difficult pull with enough guys, but you can always split up the pulls by installing a j-box somewhere in the midpoint. I hate using lube so I always upsize my pipe, but you could try throwing some of that down in to help.

4:35 those aren't damaged conductors. Paul Abernathy said that the nylon jacket on the insulation is a sacrificial aid for pulling in the conductors.
@shimes4245 жыл бұрын
Not exactly. It's also a UV shield. Only needed inside switch boxes and anything else that creates arcs, but it does protect the insulation. Decades need to pass before damage is done, and usually the switch would burn out long before the wire is compromised, but still, it is providing UV protection
