Ahoy guys! Over the past weekend I had an opportunity to crew with a friend for the Annual Corinthian Heritage Cup Regatta, a 2 day regatta hosted by the Dallas Corinthian Yacht Club on Lake Lewisville, north of DFW. The clips in this video are from the first day of racing.
Today I was crewing with my friend, David and his wife, Nik, along with another DYCY member named Evan that I had met once or twice. We were sailing on David's Pearson 26 named Mat Salleh, with a PFHR rating of 216. We were put in the "Cruisers" class, along with 13 other boats. Saturday it was in the mid 90's with winds starting around 7 - 9 knots, which quickly started dying off in the afternoon.
We struggled a few times with timing on our tacks, causing the genoa to catch on the spreaders (which you will see happen a few times in this video). By the time we had made the turn on the south side of the lake to fly the spinnaker back downwind, we had only about 3 - 5 knots of wind which carried us along at about 2 - 3 knots. Needless to say, the downwind run was long and hot! We worked hard to keep the spinnaker flying downwind and managed to take 2nd place for the day.
Unfortunately, I didn't get any footage from the second day, but to recap, we had much better wind on Sunday, which held around 8 - 12 knots for most of the day. We took a much better line of approach to getting under the bridge and didn't have any issues with tacking the genoa. When we turned to go downwind, I mistakenly allowed the spinnaker to wrap around the forestay during it's launch which caused us to reset and probably lost about 5 -8 mins. Once the spinnaker was flying we quickly regained speed, but it wasn't enough to make up for the time lost. Overall, we held out for a third-place finish for the day and wound up taking 3rd place overall of the 13 boats in our class.
I would like to thank David and his wife Nik, for inviting me out this weekend. I'd also like to thank the entire DCYC for hosting this great event! I'm looking forward to more racing this summer!
